30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Tyrique Stevenson (No. 26)
Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year.

At No. 26 is cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, who was at the heart of one of the most heartbreaking losses last season and is hoping for a fresh start with a new coaching staff.
Background
Position: Cornerback
Age: 25
Experience: 3rd season
2025 cap hit: $1.76 million
2024 recap
Hopes were high for Stevenson heading into his second season. He showed vast improvement in the latter half of his rookie year and was poised for a breakout season in 2024. Things started out great for him, too. In Week 1, Stevenson picked off quarterback Will Levis and took it to the house late in the fourth quarter to give the Bears a come-from-behind victory over the Tennessee Titans. Those good times didn't last long, however.

In Week 8 against the Washington Commanders, Stevenson made one of the biggest blunders you will see on the football field when he taunted the opposing fans on the final play of the game—a desperation Hail Mary from Jayden Daniels. Stevenson was out of position, came back to the action, and tipped the ball right to Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown for the game-winning score.
It was arguably the worst regular season loss the Bears have ever endured, and Stevenson became a pariah overnight. The game was a turning point for both him and the team. Chicago wound up losing 10 games in a row, and Stevenson's play began to go downhill. He was benched the week after and started losing snaps to Terell Smith. Though his opposing passer rating improved from 93.7 in 2023 to 87.5 in 2024, Stevenson wasn't the same after the Commanders game. He finished the year with 78 total tackles, one for a loss, two interceptions, and one forced fumble.
2025 outlook
Many returning Bears players were happy to wipe the slate clean with a new coaching staff this offseason, but Stevenson has to be among the most excited. He gets a fresh start with a defensive staff that should be ideal for his skillset. New defensive coordinator Dennis Allen likes to have defensive backs play man coverage, which should suit Stevenson. His new position coach, Al Harris, will also play an instrumental role in his continued development. During his time with the Dallas Cowboys, Harris helped cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland earn All-Pro seasons. He's one of the best position coaches, and Stevenson will only benefit from his tutelage. Stevenson will need to earn his playing time, however.

Big question: Can Stevenson redeem himself in Chicago?
Stevenson's status going into the 2025 season is one of the biggest questions surrounding the Bears. He never was able to fully bounce back from his mental gaffe, and there isn't a certainty that he will be the starting cornerback opposite Jaylon Johnson. Smith showed flashes as Stevenson's replacement last year, and the Bears selected Zah Frazier, a lengthy cornerback, in the fifth round of the draft. We can expect competition at the position, even if the job is Stevenson's to lose at this point.
As far as his play is concerned, we have seen multiple Bears players have their tenures defined by one poor play or performance. Cody Parkey is synonymous with the double doink, while Chris Conte is remembered for the fourth-down touchdown allowed to Randall Cobb. Stevenson is more talented than either of those players and has the chance to start a new chapter. It's entirely possible his lapse in judgment becomes a footnote in an otherwise successful career. It's also possible he never reaches his potential in Chicago and gets supplanted by someone else. Stevenson will be a player to watch during training camp and the preseason.

Katie Ledecky tops Pallister, McIntosh in swim worlds epic; Gretchen Walsh adds gold
In what may have been the best race of her career, Katie Ledecky won an 800m freestyle that lived up to the hype, becoming the first swimmer to win a seventh world title in one event. Ledecky swam 8:05.62 to beat Australian Lani Pallister (8:05.98) and Canadian Summer McIntosh (8:07.29) in a showdown among the three fastest women in history in the event. Ledecky rallied from second place at 700 meters -- just .14 behind McIntosh -- then held off the charging Pallister in a championship record time. It's her 23 world title (second to Michael Phelps' 26) and 30th world medal (second to Phelps' 33). Ledecky is now 11-0 in global finals in the 800m free, her trademark event, since her 2012 Olympic breakout at age 15. SWIMMING WORLDS: Results | Broadcast Schedule Gretchen Walsh fills U.S. women's swim worlds gold set Earlier Saturday, American Gretchen Walsh added the 50m fly title to her 100m fly victory from last Monday. She swam 24.83 seconds, distancing silver medalist Alexandria Perkins by 48 hundredths — greater than the margin separating Perkins from last place in the race. Of the 42 women's and men's events on the world championships program, the women's 50m fly was the only one the U.S. had never won. The U.S. has won at least one medal in all 16 women's events held so far at these worlds. There are four women's finals left on Sunday. Walsh was one of the majority of U.S. swim team members affected to varying degrees by acute gastroenteritis, or a stomach bug, leading into worlds. "It felt like myself again in the water," she said Saturday. She said Monday that her body had felt "fragile." She has one individual event left at these worlds: the 50m free. She owns the world's top time this year. For Gretchen Walsh, a journey to a possible gold rush at World Swimming Championships Gretchen Walsh has never won an individual global title in a long-course pool. She could leave worlds with four of them. Nick Zaccardi, Australian Kaylee McKeown and American Regan Smith went one-two in the 200m backstroke, just as they did in all three backstrokes at the 2023 Worlds, both backstrokes at the 2024 Olympics and in the 100m back earlier at these worlds. American Claire Curzan, who swept the backstrokes at the 2024 Worlds in the absence of McKeown and Smith, took bronze Saturday. Both U.S. entries won a medal in all three women's backstroke events. McKeown clocked 2:03.33, the third-fastest time in history. McKeown and Smith combine to own 22 of the top 23 times in history. Frenchman Maxime Grousset took the men's 100m fly in 49.62, the third-fastest time in history behind Caeleb Dressel's top two. Australian Cameron McEvoy and Brit Ben Proud went one-two in the men's 50m free, repeating their finishes from the Olympics. American Jack Alexy added bronze to his 100m free silver. Inside Summer McIntosh's big change that led to three world records Summer McIntosh crossed an ocean and took up a new sport that helped her have one of the best swim meets in history. Nick Zaccardi,

Report: Newcastle striker returns amid uncertain future
Alexander Isak's Newcastle Return Amid Transfer Drama Newcastle United's summer has taken another twist with the unexpected return of Alexander Isak from his personal training camp in Spain. As reported by Sky Sports News' Keith Downie, the Swedish striker is 'due back in Newcastle today following his personal training camp in Spain,' having opted out of the club's pre-season tour of Asia. Isak's Unconventional Recovery Raises Eyebrows Isak's decision to rehab at Real Sociedad's training base in San Sebastián—his former club—has raised eyebrows, not least because of how Newcastle manager Eddie Howe learned of it. 'Eddie Howe said this morning out in South Korea that he found out Isak had travelled to Spain via the media,' Sky Sports confirmed. That revelation underscores potential friction between the player and club, especially with a reported thigh injury keeping him out of the team's Asian tour. Photo IMAGO Isak's absence, while unexplained by Newcastle publicly, hints at deeper complexities behind the scenes. His choice to train alone and with personal staff could signal dissatisfaction or uncertainty about his future at St. James' Park. Liverpool's Bid and Newcastle's Response Adding fuel to the fire, Liverpool reportedly made a massive move for the striker, with Sky Sports reporting that 'Liverpool yesterday had a £110m bid for the striker rejected by Newcastle.' Such a sizeable offer, though ultimately turned down, suggests Newcastle could be preparing for life without their star forward. In response, the Magpies are not standing still. According to Sky Sports, 'Newcastle this morning made a £70m offer to RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko as they attempt to line up a replacement for Isak, should he leave for Liverpool.' The club's swift action in pursuing Sesko implies they are at least open to cashing in on Isak—if the price is right. Key Decisions Loom for Eddie Howe Newcastle's pre-season tour concludes on Monday, at which point decisions about squad structure and Isak's role must be made. Whether Isak remains central to Howe's plans or becomes a headline-grabbing exit, this story is far from over. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Newcastle fan's perspective, the entire Isak situation is concerning but not altogether surprising. On one hand, Isak has been a phenomenal asset since joining, offering pace, flair, and crucial goals in last season's top-four push and cup win. Fans will understand his need to manage fitness carefully—especially with a recurring thigh issue—but choosing to train solo in Spain, and not informing the manager, feels like poor communication at best. Moreover, Eddie Howe finding out through the media is a red flag. This hints at either mismanagement or discontent from the player's side, and Newcastle supporters will want clarity from both the club and Isak himself. If Liverpool's £110m bid is accurate, the potential even higher fee would be excellent, but replacing Isak won't be easy. Sesko is a talent, but he's unproven at Premier League level. Many fans would prefer the club hold firm unless Isak explicitly asks to leave. At the same time, if his head has been turned, it may be better to cash in now and reinvest smartly while there's time in the window. Whatever happens, clear communication and a quick resolution are essential to avoid disruption in what promises to be a pivotal season for the Magpies.

MLB Rumors: Mariners Got Eugenio Suarez for Discount Rate After Yankees Showed No Interest?
A new report claims the Seattle Mariners were able to get Eugenio Suarez for a reasonable rate because his trade market was far weaker than the Arizona Diamondbacks expected. Earlier this week, the Mariners made another notable splash in the trade market when they acquired the biggest bat available, All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez. The rumors around the game would have you believe he was the most pursued player this month. Well, that was not the case at all. Eugenio Suarez contract: Set to be a free agent after 2025 season According to USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the market for the slugger was very weak. And the New York Yankees — a team heavily linked to Suarez — showed little interest in the two-time All-Star. 'They were stunned on how little action they got on Suarez. They wanted to move him desperately. But nobody was offering anything,' Nightengale said on 'The Foul Territory Show.' 'A few GMs have told me that at the trade deadline, you never get much for position players. Even when JD Martinez got moved to the Diamondbacks years ago, they gave up a bag of balls for the guy. 'They were very disappointed that the Yankees didn't go after him, and then the Reds went to Hayes instead of going after him. The market for [Suarez] cratered.' The 34-year-old is on pace to hit over 50 homers and well over 100 RBIs this year. Along with the acquisition of Josh Naylor a couple of weeks ago, the Mariners now have a pair of big bats to go along with MVP candidate Cal Raleigh in the second half. They are a real threat to get to the World Series in October. Eugenio Suaez stats: .248 AVG, .319 OBP, .572 SLG, .891 OPS, 36 HR, 87 RBI, 66 R Suarez is a rental and is unlikely to be re-signed after the season unless Seattle wins a championship. In the trade, the M's gave up prospects Tyler Locklear, Hunter Cranton (No. 16 team prospect), and Juan Burgos. All of them are players ranked outside the top eight in the team's system.
