Teen dropouts lured into working for sex scam syndicate

The Star6 days ago
JOHOR: Teenage school dropouts were among those lured by supposedly high-paying jobs offered by a syndicate running a sex scam.
These teenagers were recruited through social media with promises of a monthly salary of RM2,200 to RM4,000, said Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar.
They were also told that they could earn up to US$2,500 (RM10,637) once they became more skilled and were sent to work abroad, he added.
In reality, these recruits were trained to 'hunt' for victims via fake social media accounts and persuade them to perform sexual acts on video, he said yesterday.
Comm Kumar said these recruits were confined and made to work for the syndicate for 12 hours a day.
'If they refused to cooperate, they were beaten, forced to eat chillies and subjected to sexual abuse. They were only allowed a day off after two weeks of work but even then, their movements were strictly monitored,' he said.
He said the recruits' mobile phones and identification cards were confiscated by syndicate members, thus preventing them from seeking help.
'If they wanted to quit, they had to pay RM30,000 to be released from employment,' he said.
Comm Kumar said the syndicate's modus operandi was to create fake social media accounts of attractive women to entice people into making sexually explicit video calls.
'During the video call, the syndicate member would persuade the victim to perform sexual acts, all of which were recorded and later used to blackmail him for money,' he said.
'The syndicate member would send phishing links to hack into the victim's mobile phone. Once the person clicked on the link, the syndicate would hack into his mobile phone, gaining access to the contact list and photo gallery.'
The syndicate would then threaten to distribute the videos to the victim's entire contact list if he refused to pay up.
They would attempt to extort the victim by asking for RM500 to RM1,000 each time, he said.
Based on police intelligence, Comm Kumar said a series of raids were carried out between June 20 and July 1 around Johor Baru and Kulai.
This led to the arrest of seven men and two women aged between 17 and 50, including the mastermind of the syndicate, which had been active since November last year. He said three recruits aged 15, 16 and 26, who had also been sexually exploited, were also rescued.
He urged the public not to be easily taken in by high-paying job offers, especially those circulated on social media, and to always verify the background of these so-called companies.
'And do not be misled by the profiles of seemingly attractive women on social media, as syndicates use fake accounts to send phishing links that steal data from mobile phones before extorting from you,' he said.

Mother seeks transparent probe into daughter's death in school dormitory

SIPITANG: "I want a transparent, fair and just investigation." These were the words of Noraidah Lamat, the mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who recently died after allegedly falling from the third floor of a school dormitory building. The incident involving the student from Sipitang has also been linked to bullying among students at the school. Noraidah, 45, a teacher, recounted that the last time she met her only daughter was during a school gotong-royong (communal work) programme on July 12. "On that Saturday (July 12), the school held a gotong-royong. My daughter really wanted me to attend. Before that, she had called using a public phone and said, 'Mama, please come'. "I joked with her that I'm not good at gotong-royong. But the next morning, I left Sipitang at about 9am. "Only a few people were there for the programme, so she was very happy. After the gotong-royong ended, we went straight back to Sipitang," she said. The following Sunday, she sent Zara back to the dormitory. "I didn't notice anything unusual; she was still her usual enthusiastic self," she said. Noraidah further said that on the same Saturday, Zara spent the evening at the Esplanade Public Park playing games with her friend until 7pm. "I picked them up after that and we went home. The next day, I sent her back to the hostel. "When we were about to leave for the dorm, she said she wanted to go back a bit later than usual. But I didn't suspect anything. Around 1pm, I told her we had to leave. The latest she could arrive was by 3.30pm," she said when met at her home today. Noraidah also recalled that on Sunday, before returning to the dorm, Zara cooked egg bread. "That was the last meal she brought and cooked at my house. I found it strange at the time. She cooked it for us," she said. Originally from Kampung Naluyan, Noraidah expressed hope that the investigation into her daughter's death would be carried out transparently and fairly. Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, who visited Noraidah today, also presented a RM10,000 contribution from the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), in addition to other cash assistance. Also present were Qhazanah Sabah Berhad chairman and Sindumin assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, and Yayasan Sabah director, Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar. Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a separate development, expressed condolences and visited the family at the hospital to ensure all their needs were met and their welfare looked after. In a statement, she said the Education Ministry (KPM) would fully cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing investigation. Papar police chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka had said police were conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of Zara's death.

Actor files police report over defamatory social media post

KUALA LUMPUR: Police received a report from a local actor and singer over an alleged defamatory and provocative social media post made on the 'Threads' platform. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, confirmed this with the New Straits Times, adding that the post was claimed to have damaged the complainant's reputation. "The report was filed at 4.12pm on July 18 over a post by the owner of a social media account, which allegedly contained slanderous, provocative, and seditious elements. "The post was made publicly and is believed to have the potential to tarnish the complainant's image and reputation," he said. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which covers the misuse of network facilities. Those convicted under Section 500 could be liable for a maximum two years' jail, a fine, or both. Section 233 stipulates a maximum fine of RM500,000 or two years' jail or both if found guilty, as well as a further fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. Usuf said that this case is not related to the ongoing investigation involving local artiste Shila Amzah. "This case has no connection to the Shila Amzah matter," he said, addressing speculation linking the two.

KANGAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) intercepted 23 kilogrammes of cannabis flowers valued at RM690,000 near the Malaysia-Thailand border in Padang Besar early this morning. The seizure occurred at 5 am following intelligence gathered from CCTV footage. GOF North Brigade Commander SAC Shahrum Hashim stated that a GOF team detected suspicious activity, leading to the discovery of a colourful sack containing dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. 'The sack was handed over to the Padang Besar district police headquarters narcotics crime investigation department for further action under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,' he said.
