Taslima Nasreen free to move anywhere in India, confirms Union Ministry
Writer Taslima Nasreen is free to move anywhere in the country, the Union Government has informed BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya, who had demanded in Parliament that she be allowed to return to West Bengal.
In response to a Rajya Sabha parliamentary query, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has confirmed that the exiled Bangladeshi author has been granted an Indian visa of appropriate category and duration, allowing her the freedom to move anywhere in India, including Kolkata. The assurance came in a letter addressed to the Rajya Sabha MP by Union Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh, dated May 5, 2025.
The response follows Mr. Bhattacharya's intervention during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on March 17 when he demanded the safe return of Ms. Nasreen to Kolkata. 'Taslima Nasreen wants to come back to Kolkata. This city is like a city of life to her. She wants to compose her work in Bengali,' Mr. Bhattacharya added. He also said that Ms. Nasreen wanted to live and compose her work forever in West Bengal and should be allowed the freedom.
Mr. Singh, in his written reply, stated: 'We have taken note of your concerns… She is free to move anywhere in India within the terms of the existing rules.'
Ms. Nasreen had accused the West Bengal government of 'forcefully' removing her play Lajja from the State's theatre festivals. Lajja is one of the most popular and most controversial books by the author which has evoked mixed reviews across the globe.
The development assumes significance as Ms. Nasreen has lived in exile since mid-1990s, after facing threats from Islamist groups for her outspoken writings on women's rights and religious extremism. She has openly voiced her concerns over the extremisms of Islam and has been criticised by many for her writings and opinions against the religion.
Though India has periodically renewed her visa, her stay has often been restricted to Delhi, sparking debates around freedom of movement and human rights of the author. Her long-standing desire to return to Kolkata — a city she once called home — has been a recurring issue raised by civil society and rights activists. Many a time BJP MPs have backed her up, including in the issue over her play. Lok Sabha MP Sukanta Majumdar had publicly voiced his support for her.
The Environment Ministry's letter has also been sent to officials at the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs, indicating a coordinated administrative follow-up.

Ladli Behna aid to be hiked on Rakshabandhan: CM
Bhopal: CM Mohan Yadav has announced that the monthly assistance under the Ladli Behna Yojana will be increased on the occasion of Rakshabandhan , with a long-term goal of raising it to Rs 3,000 over the next five years. At present, beneficiaries receive Rs 1,250 per month. Addressing a public gathering in Jabalpur district on Saturday, Yadav also announced a Rs 1,400 crore irrigation project, the Gomukh reservoir, which will benefit over 25,000 farmers across Jabalpur and Mandla districts. Diversification, policy reforms aid Odisha's industrial progress: CM
1 2 3 4 Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the BJP govt's one-year anniversary, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said that Odisha is becoming a "diversified industrial powerhouse" and a top investment destination in the country by not just approving investments worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore but also successfully grounding projects worth Rs 1.78 lakh crore. "Odisha is no longer just a minerals and metals hub. We are becoming a diversified industrial powerhouse, where opportunity flows from port to plant, and from cities to every aspirational district," the CM said during a meeting with leading industrialists and entrepreneurs in the city. "We are not merely sanctioning projects; we are grounding them. We are not making promises; we are delivering results — at scale, with speed, and with purpose," Majhi said. Mapping the industrial growth story, he said, "In just one year, we approved over 200 large and mega projects. Odisha now stands for credibility, competitiveness and commitment to progress." Train halted in Rajasthan over Gurjar quota demands, track cleared after assurances
Rail traffic on the Kota division of the West Central Railway resumed on Sunday evening after Gurjar protesters vacated the railway tracks near Bayana town in Rajasthan's Bharatpur, following a brief disruption during which a passenger train was stalled for over three agitation happened after a Mahapanchayat was held earlier in the day at the Karwari Shaheed Memorial in the Pilupura area. Convened by the Gurjar Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, the meeting was aimed at pressing the community's long-standing demands related to reservation and other welfare issues. Authorities, including Railway Protection Force (RPF), local police, and senior railway officials, engaged in negotiations with the Jain, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Kota (WCR), confirmed that the track was cleared by around 7 pm following successful discussions. "There has been no report of injury or loss of life, and the railway is fully committed to ensuring passenger safety," he to the protest, Vijay Bainsla - son of the late Kirori Singh Bainsla, who had spearheaded several Gurjar reservation movements since 2006 - downplayed the disruption.
