Khelo Bharat Conclave seeks collective effort for Indian sports
The Union Government highlighted the way for National Sports Federations, State Governments, and Corporate houses towards playing a major role in taking Indian sports forward in the global arena, at the Khelo Bharat Conclave on Thursday. 'Sports is a public movement. We can set goals and achieve them only if we all work together,' said the Union Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya. The Conclave saw four presentations on Sports governance reforms, Khelo Bharat Niti, India's medal-winning roadmap and the 'One Corporate One Sport' initiative. Every presentation was followed by an interactive session. 'By employing this integrated policy, India can shine in the world of entertainment, generate jobs and provide direction to the youth of India,' said the Minister of State for Sports, Raksha Khadse. 'I urge the National Sports Federations to provide a five-year policy by August and then we can develop a 10-year plan. With the Asian Games next year, we need a holistic approach because we not only want to win medals in the Olympics, but make sports a commercial property, inviting the world to come and play in India and boost sports tourism. We are happy to provide all support to NSFs, but we will also look at performance based grants,' Mandaviya said. Apart from good governance, there was discussion on improving the quality of coaches and sports administrators, enhance sports goods business and address the menace of doping.

Centre approves NLCIL's ₹7,000-crore investment in renewable energy arm
The Union Government has approved a ₹7,000-crore investment by NLC India Limited (NLCIL) into its renewable energy arm, NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL). According to an NLCIL press note, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister has granted an exemption from the existing guidelines of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), empowering NLCIL to invest in NIRL, and to enable NIRL to invest in projects independently or through joint ventures. This significant decision exempts NLCIL and NIRL from the 30% net worth ceiling imposed on Central Public Sector Enterprises for investment in subsidiaries and joint ventures (JVs), ensuring enhanced operational autonomy and financial agility. The move is poised to catalyse NLCIL's growth in the renewable energy sector, aligning with India's national energy transition goals. NLCIL operates a renewable energy portfolio of 1.4 GW. These assets will be transferred to NIRL to consolidate green energy initiatives under a unified platform. With this strategic support, NLCIL plans to scale its renewable energy capacity from the current 1.4 GW to 10 GW by 2030, contributing significantly to India's commitment of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, as declared at COP 26 under the ''Panchamrit' strategy. The long-term vision of NLCIL includes expanding this capacity to 32 GW by 2047, in alignment with the nation's goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070. NLCIL said the approval would help the company strengthen India's global position in green energy leadership; reduce India's coal imports and carbon footprint; ensure reliable 24x7 power supply through clean sources; generate large-scale direct and indirect employment, and promote inclusive socio-economic development in project regions. According to NLCIL Chairman and Managing Director Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, 'The support extended by the Government of India through this exemption is a game changer for NLCIL's renewable energy roadmap. It reaffirms our commitment to building a sustainable future and scaling up green energy infrastructure. The company is now well-positioned to invest in cutting-edge technologies and forge strategic collaborations that will help us realise our goals.'

Tur dal farmers left in lurch by Centre: Minister Priyank Kharge
BENGALURU: Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge accused the Union Government of flooding the market with cheap, low-quality tur dal from other countries. Karnataka is India's top tur dal producing state. Over 40% of it comes from just one district, Kalaburagi, which is home to the GI-tagged Kalaburagi Tur. 'But once again, our farmers have been left in the lurch by the Modi government,' the minister alleged, taking to the social media platform, X. The minister stated that it is shocking that tur imports have been duty-free since May 2021, with the waiver extended till March 2026. In 2024-25 alone, over 13 lakh metric tonnes were imported and MoUs with countries like Mozambique have been signed to import another two lakh metric tonnes, he said. In 2024-25, India produced 35 lakh metric tonnes of tur, but the Union government procured less than 10% of it, the minister stated. Karnataka alone produced 10 lakh quintals, but farmers were forced to sell at Rs 6,000/quintal, well below the MSP of Rs 7,550, causing a loss to farmers. This year's MSP is Rs 8,000, but prices have crashed to Rs 6,250, nearly half of last year's rates, the minister stated. Stating that the agrarian economy reels under neglect and mismanagement, the minister slammed Union Ministers from Karnataka for not standing up for the rightful interests of the state they represent.
