Himachal seeks urgent Central aid as rain-triggered disasters cause Rs 883 crore loss, 109 deaths
In response, the state government has sought a special relief package from the Union Government to support the rehabilitation of families who have lost their homes, agricultural land, and livelihoods.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while speaking to the media, said that the state government would soon announce a special relief package for the disaster-affected families after due consultation within the Cabinet.
He said that the state has limited resources and cannot compensate for the damages without liberal assistance from the Union Government.
'Therefore, the State has sought a special relief package from the Union Government to support the rehabilitation of the families, who have lost their homes, agricultural land and livelihood. Monsoon has just begun and there is a long remaining span of the season. So we must remain vigilant throughout its course,' he said.
He added that discussions were also held with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, who has assured to consider all the demands sympathetically made by the state. He said, 'We do not want any credit and the state government was ready to meet with anyone under his leadership for the welfare of disaster-hit people.'
Sukhu stated that during his recent visit to New Delhi, he took up several key issues with Union Ministers, including a request to allow the allotment of five bighas of land under the Forest Rights Act (FRA) to rehabilitate the affected families suitably.
He also urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to visit the disaster-affected areas to personally assess the situation. 'The Union Home Minister has assured him to visit the affected areas shortly,' he said.

Mumbai, July 18 (UNI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his address to the state Legislative Council on concluding day of the monsoon session today highlighted the state government's significant initiatives in law enforcement, promotion of Marathi language and public welfare. He emphasised that the state had adopted several technology-driven measures to enhance law and order, resulting in increased conviction rates. He stated that the response time for emergency services via the 112 helpline has improved to just 7.23 minutes, and that cybercrime rates have seen a decline of 878 cases compared to 2024. There are now 50 cyber police stations and 52 cyber labs operational in Maharashtra and the state has launched a dedicated 1930 helpline for cyber complaints. Over 1,300 pirated websites have been shut down, he informed. To boost conviction rate, regional police units have been authorised to appoint private lawyers. As of May 2025, the conviction rate stands at 44.2 percent slightly below the 45 percent mark recorded in May 2024. Special courts have been established for POCSO and crimes against women, and over 20 fast-track courts are operational across the state. The state has intensified its crackdown on narcotics with over 1,400 cases registered and drugs worth over Rs 140 crore were seized. Notably, 468 individuals have been arrested in 281 MD drugs-related cases. The government has also taken strict action against Bangladeshi infiltrators, arresting over 1,000, and against Naxal elements with 28 extremists killed and 22 surrendered over the past year. Delhi govt to prepare Power Master Plan to strengthen electricity infra
New Delhi, Jul 18 (PTI) The Delhi government will soon prepare a comprehensive 'Power Master Plan' aimed at strengthening the capital's electricity infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted supply amid rising demand, officials said on Friday. Delhi Power minister Ashish Sood chaired a high-level meeting to review the power augmentation roadmap of the national capital, particularly focusing on upcoming plans of Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) and the three private distribution companies — TPDDL, BRPL and BYPL — over the next three years. During the meeting, Sood directed the power secretary to begin work on drafting the 'Power Master Plan' for Delhi, which will serve as a blueprint for streamlining generation, transmission, and distribution across the city. DTL presented its capacity addition projections up to March 2029, including the commissioning of two new substations at Gopalpur and Tikri Khurd with a combined capacity of 4,000 MVA. Once implemented, the total transmission capacity in Delhi is expected to rise to 24,000 MVA, against an anticipated peak demand of around 11,000 MVA. The three discoms also submitted their respective augmentation plans till September 2026, which include setting up transformers of varying capacities across the capital. The estimated investment for this is pegged at Rs 1,937 crore. Sood stressed the need to expedite land acquisition for Distribution Transformers and directed the power secretary to convene meetings with MLAs, DDA, and MCD officials to resolve delays. He also sought accountability for delays in sub-station projects pending since 2022-23. No mercy for people who spread the curse of drugs in Punjab: Bhagwant Mann
Agency: Malerkotla (PB), Jul 18 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that no mercy will be shown to people who had spread the curse of drugs in the state. Speaking after inaugurating new tehsil complexes at Ahmedgarh and Amargarh, he said that the 'Drug Jarnails who were once considered invincible have now been put behind the bars." The resounding success of the ongoing Yudh Nashian Virudh is a testimony that the people stand with the state government in its war against drugs, an official statement quoted Mann as saying. The chief minister claimed that the Congress and Akalis were divided houses as their leaders squabble for power. 'These power hungry politicians can't survive without it. They are getting restless as people have ousted them to opt the Aam Aadmi Party," he said. Mann said the state government will take several pro-people decisions in the coming days and ensure that youth become job-givers instead of job-seekers. He said Punjab is the sacred land of great Gurus, saints and seers who preached love, harmony and tolerance. However, some 'anti-Punjab forces" have been trying to destroy this fabric of unity by orchestrating sacrilegious acts against holy scriptures since 2016, Mann said, reiterating his government's resolve to ensure exemplary punishment for such culprits. He also highlighted the key public welfare initiatives of the state government, including the recent Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana under which cashless medical treatment worth up to Rs 10 lakh will be extended to every family in Punjab. Mann said that Punjab has set a benchmark by providing government jobs to more than 55,000 youths in the last three years. 'The transparent recruitment has increased their faith in the state government. So the youths are shunning the idea of moving abroad and instead prepare for government jobs," he said.
