Keep up with rapid development of AI technology

KUCHING: The public should always keep up with rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to protect themselves from the risk of cyber threats, said Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.
He said Malaysians also should not view lightly the risks involved, such as the spreading of false information and content manipulation that can threaten national harmony.
'AI can sometimes be used as an effort that can lead to blackmail, such as using our pictures or voices, but not by us. So, this is one of the challenges we face.
'To avoid any victimisation in the future, I believe that we must be able to face all these developments that have agendas that can undermine or misuse AI... they always move fast, they are always ahead of the current technology,' he said.
He said this at the launch of the MCMC Microsoft AI TEACH Programme at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) here today.
Julaihi said that as part of initial measures to ensure the safe use of AI technology, the federal government introduced the National Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics Guidelines (AIGE) last year.
Meanwhile, the two-day AI TEACH Programme, which began today, is being held in a physical and hybrid manner at several selected locations, including CENTEXS as the main site, in addition to the six SDEC Digital Innovation Hub sites statewide in Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu, Kapit, Mukah and Lawas.
The MCMC-organised programme also has the cooperation and support of Microsoft Malaysia as well strategic partners such as CENTEXS, Sarawak Digital Economic Corporation (SDEC), Social Security Organisation and the Biji-biji Initiative.
Julaihi said the programme has opened a new chapter in the digital expertise development agenda in the state, in line with the goals of the post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) mooted by the Sarawak government.
It focuses on mastering basic AI skills, understanding the ethics of using technology and applying practical skills in preparation for the increasingly challenging and technology-based job market.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement that the MCMC Microsoft AI TEACH programme, which was launched on a pilot basis in June 2024, has successfully trained over 2,000 individuals from various backgrounds, especially vulnerable groups.
This initiative has been implemented in eight states nationwide, namely Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Penang, Melaka, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Labuan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Financial service providers in Malaysia are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI), according to the central bank's AI Survey 2024. The survey found that in 2024, 71% of banking institutions and development financial institutions, and 77% of insurance and takaful operators had implemented at least one AI application. 'Notably, in 2024, 71% of banking institutions and DFIs had implemented at least one AI application, an increase from 56% in the previous year. Similarly, 77% of ITOs had adopted at least one AI application, compared to 58% in the previous year,' according to Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) discussion paper on 'Artificial Intelligence in the Malaysian Financial Sector' today. BNM said over 60% of banking institutions and insurers view AI as a strategic priority over the next one to three years. 'This trend looks set to continue in the coming years, as over half of the respondens agreed that AI has the potential to generate significant new value for both their organisations and consumers.' The central bank stressed it remains vigilant to developments in AI and closely monitors its usage across financial service providers. 'As AI technologies and the state of adoption in financial service providers continue to grow and evolve, we recognise that AI use may introduce new risks that are not adequately addressed by the existing regulatory framework.' BNM said an escalation in supervisory focus may be considered if AI-related risks become more material, in line with the principles of parity, proportionality, and neutrality. 'For example, due to widespread use of AI applications in critical functions or to replace human decision making. Where relevant, we may explore the need to introduce new regulatory expectations should the need arise in the future,' it said. The central bank said it closely monitors five technological developments and innovation in the financial sector to shape its future regulatory and supervisory approach on AI. The discussion paper seeks to share and obtain feedback on BNM's posture on responsible AI innovation in the financial sector; the proposed regulatory approach for AI, as well as industry guidelines on responsible use; and general development approach including priority areas for greater innovation and industry-led collaboration. BNM said it aims to facilitate and encourage responsible adoption and use of AI across the financial sector in a manner that will advance better consumer outcomes and its broader policy objectives. 'This means that while new innovations, such as AI, are given the opportunity to flourish, associated risks that may negatively impact system-wide stability, consumer outcomes, and confidence in the financial sector will need to be managed effectively.' BNM interviewed select local financial industry players throughout 2024 and issued an updated industry-wide survey to gain insights into recent advancements on AI within the Malaysian financial sector. The AI Survey 2024 received responses from 1,207 financial service providers.

PENAMPANG: Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has called on Malaysians, particularly in Sabah, to uphold the true meaning of independence by preserving unity, well-being, and peace. He emphasised that harmony and stability are crucial for sustainable national development and sovereignty. 'This all starts with cooperation, unity, and harmony because if the people are at odds with one another, unable to cooperate or be in harmony, how can national sovereignty be defended?' Ewon said after launching the Sabah Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy. The event, organised by the Sabah Information Department, involves 20 vehicles and 60 participants covering 2,500 kilometres across 75 locations in 20 days. The convoy began in Penampang and will conclude in Tuaran on Aug 23. Ewon encouraged Sabahans to join the 'One House, One Jalur Gemilang' initiative by displaying the national flag at their homes. He also highlighted the relevance of this year's National Day theme, 'Malaysia MADANI, Rakyat Disantuni,' aligning it with the 13th Malaysia Plan's goals of uplifting the people's dignity. 'I hope this theme reaches the grassroots. The survey reflects a growing awareness of scams and rising public trust in the financial sector's protective measures, driven by the ongoing #JanganKenaScam national awareness campaign, the two associations said in a joint statement today. Commissioned by the banking sector and conducted by Rakuten Insight between March and April 2025, the survey gathered responses from 1,000 individuals nationwide. According to the survey, 92 per cent of users recognised the risks of installing unsolicited Android Package Kit (APK) files, 85 per cent could identify fake short message service (SMS) messages, 79 per cent avoided suspicious links, 82 per cent would contact their bank if compromised, and 77 per cent would freeze their cards via mobile or online banking. ABM chairman Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said the campaign has played a key role in improving public awareness and emphasised the need to move beyond education and towards behavioural readiness. "We are seeing a positive shift in public awareness and trust, but we also recognise that scammers exploit fear and urgency to bypass rational thinking. From the survey, we saw that 71 per cent of respondents feared losing money if scammers' instructions were not followed, as the primary factor in scam cases,' he said. According to the statement, Malaysians are also showing increased confidence in their banks' protection measures, with 76 per cent of respondents expressing satisfaction with their banks' overall effectiveness in safeguarding against scams, a 13 per cent rise from the previous survey. Meanwhile, three in five respondents found their banks to be helpful after a scam had occurred, suggesting that post-incident support is becoming a trusted part of the response. It also said social media remains the most common source of scam awareness, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, with seven in 10 Malaysians now actively sharing scam warnings within their networks, especially via WhatsApp, which reflects a growing culture of community-based vigilance. AIBIM president Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed said the results indicate that their awareness efforts are yielding positive outcomes, but they must not become complacent. "Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, and our response must adapt in tandem. We want to equip Malaysians not only with information, but also with practical instincts and tools they can rely on in moments of uncertainty,' he said. - BERNAMA More Like This
