Det. Angel Batista has questions for ‘Dexter,' plus what to stream this week

Welcome to Screen Gab, the newsletter for everyone who can't stop watching their favorite fictional serial killer.
The 'Dexter' universe expands this week with the arrival of another spinoff. And it brings Dexter Morgan, the titular antihero played by Michael C. Hall, back from the dead. 'Dexter: Resurrection' picks up after the events of 'Dexter: New Blood' — we promise, we're not trying to start a drinking game here — where the serial killer vigilante was seemingly killed. In anticipation of the show's Friday premiere, Greg Braxton, our certified 'Dexter' expert, spoke with Hall about reviving the killer role — check it out here. And this week's Guest Spot features David Zayas, Hall's co-star who plays Angel Batista, discussing his return.
Also in this week's Screen Gab, our streaming suggestions include a cozy crime comedy featuring an antiques expert heroine and another home improvement series from the Chip and Joanna Gaines factory.

Recommendations from the film and TV experts at The Times
'The Madame Blanc Mysteries' (Acorn TV)
Back for a fourth season, this series set among British expatriates in the south of France (played by the island of Malta) is nominally a detective show — there's always a crime to solve — but at heart it's a small-town comedy more interested in the lives of its quirky repeating characters than in whodunit. Series co-creator Sally Lindsay stars as Jean White, an antiques expert regularly called upon by Police Chief André Caron (Alex Gaumond) to analyze some clue or give the history of vintage stolen goods. Completing her world are alliterative, spritely rich oldsters Judith and Jeremy (Sue Holderness and Robin Askwith); garage owner Gloria (Sue Vincent); taxi driver Dom (Steve Edge), whose long-simmering passion for Jean has at last come to a boil; and, excitingly, Tony Robinson, who was Baldrick on 'Blackadder,' as Dom's formerly larcenous Uncle Patrick, now running the local bar where all the characters inevitably wind up. As is the case with many such shows, it gets sillier as it goes on; but if you want serious, there are plenty of dark serials happy to take your time. This place is sunny. — Robert Lloyd
'Mini Reni' (HBO Max, Discovery+)
As someone who can spend an alarming amount of time watching Sunday-reset cleaning videos on TikTok as a way to convince myself it has motivating powers, I am always on the lookout for home improvement shows that have the same effect. In the series, shiplap queen Joanna Gaines ditches hubby Chip to tackle 'quick' home makeovers. With each episode, she has about a week to transform three rooms — 'There's no demo day. We're just using things like paint, trim, tile and furniture' to change a space, she assures us. It's still an ambitious undertaking for the average person — I have towel hooks that I've needed to hang for months, so the thought of having secret doorways installed anywhere in my space is just not happening — but it feels just as good to believe you're getting ideas for a project down the line. — Yvonne Villarreal
A weekly chat with actors, writers, directors and more about what they're working on — and what they're watching
'Dexter: Resurrection,' the latest addition to the ever-expanding 'Dexter' universe, makes good on its title. After being shot in the chest — by his son, no less — and pronounced dead in the 2021 series 'Dexter: New Blood,' Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), the forensics specialist who moonlighted as a serial killer vigilante, is now very much alive and well enough to deliver some more narrative intrigue in the series for Paramount+ with Showtime. While there are newcomers added to the mix, returning characters include Angel Batista (David Zayas), Dexter's friend who is now a captain at the Miami Metro Police Department where they once worked together — and he's on a mission to fill in questions about Dexter's past. Zayas stopped by Guest Spot to talk about what to expect in the new sequel series and how his own experiences in law enforcement inform his onscreen roles. — Yvonne Villarreal
Fans had hoped for the long-teased face-off between Batista and Dexter in 'Dexter: New Blood,' but it didn't happen. 'Dexter: Resurrection' provides that anticipated reunion. What can you tease about the dynamic that plays out between these characters?
The dynamic between Batista and Dexter is now a cautious cat-and-mouse game. Batista is also still in shock about the revelation that Dexter been alive all these years.
One would imagine that your own experiences in law enforcement have loosely inspired or informed at least one scenario in the police or detective roles you've played in your career. What's interesting to you about getting to explore that other career dramatically and/or cinematically?
I always explore the human element and the circumstances of the scene regardless of the position the character holds. Having been a real police officer, it helps me break down certain characters that I have encountered in my previous career.
You're back in the new season of 'The Bear,' as the supportive husband of Tina, who is played by your real-life wife, Liza Colón-Zayas. Describe what one of the show's intense workplace scenes would look like if it were set in the Zayas kitchen.
I think a scene in our kitchen would become intense. Liza would just kick me out. She calls the shots in the kitchen.
What have you watched recently that you're recommending to everyone you know?
Season 4 of 'The Bear' [Hulu]. The characters are so real and unapologetically flawed. It makes every moment of the show important and captivating.
What's your go-to 'comfort watch,' the film or TV show you return to again and again?
'The West Wing' [HBO Max]. It always gives me hope of how our political system should work for the people of this country.

Kurt Warner to be lead NFL game analyst for YouTube's Christmas Day Game: Sources

With a little more than a month until its first exclusive NFL regular-season game, YouTube signed Hall of Famer Kurt Warner as its lead game analyst, but is still in search of a play-by-play caller, according to sources briefed on the discussions. YouTube is expected to put its mark on the Sept. 5 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers. It will likely have some of its biggest personalities hosting 'Watch Along' type streams, where viewers potentially experience the game with YouTube influencers. Advertisement 'We'll do it in a way that only YouTube can, with an interactive viewing experience and creators right at the center of the experience,' said Mary Ellen Coe, chief business officer of YouTube, in a release for the official game announcement. A YouTube spokesperson declined to comment on Warner's signing. On the traditional broadcast, which will likely garner the most views globally, Warner will provide the commentary. Warner is the lead 'Monday Night Football' analyst for Westwood One Radio, calling the Super Bowl every season, and does about seven games for NFL Network. Play-by-play caller Rich Eisen joins Warner on the NFL Network's games. YouTube is expected to find a play-by-play caller, but its search has been made more difficult because most network-level football announcers have games on opening weekend. The Chiefs and Chargers face off on Friday, Sept. 5, which basically eliminates all college and NFL broadcasters, who have games on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Networks have also been more hesitant to help out the streamers, though NBC is handling the production for YouTube for a fee. Last season, ESPN, CBS, Fox and NBC provided broadcasters to Netflix on Christmas Day, but this season, they have been reluctant to loan out their big personalities. CBS, which is handling the production for Netflix, has been willing. The Athletic previously reported that CBS' Nate Burleson and Matt Ryan are in the mix for Netflix's doubleheader, while the non-network affiliated Drew Brees has signed as a game analyst.

From Child Star to Pop It Girl, DANNA's Hot Next Chapter Begins

For years, DANNA has lived in the spotlight. As a child actor on beloved telenovelas and a star of Netflix's Élite, she was part of Latin pop culture long before she had the chance to define her own sound. But over time, and often behind the scenes, she was building a different kind of career — one rooted in music, creative control, and a clear desire for evolution. 'I'm in my just having fun era,' she tells Somos. 'I'm not taking shit too seriously. I'm just having fun with music, with life … and I'm loving it so much.' That sense of release pulses through her latest single, 'Khe Calor' — a sweaty, bass-heavy track that seems to announce a new chapter. Built around a sample from Conchi Cortés's 'Yo Tengo Un Novio (Toma Que Toma),' it nods to early-2000s Latin party hits while layering in synths, hard percussion, and a looped chorus that feels more like a spell than a lyric. DANNA calls it both a mantra and a gift, and she debuted it live for the first time on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this July. ' "I'm in my just having fun era." DANNA ' 'I think I manifested that moment,' she says. 'I prepared everything — the team, the dancers, the sound. It felt like the right time. I took a shot of Don Julio before going on stage, and then it was just magical. I'm still processing it.' The performance — her U.S. late-night debut — felt like a turning point. Dressed in a custom vaquera look by Mexican designers The Weird Market and surrounded by dancers in Y2K-ish fits, DANNA delivered a transition into that next phase. The track is flirty, confident, and steeped in movement. But underneath that heat is a kind of clarity: this is a reset. The 'Khe Calor' music video casts DANNA in a role she's written for herself, leaning fully into melodrama and reinvention. It opens like a scene from Como Agua Para Chocolate: she's accused of causing a 777-day drought, and only her tears can bring the rain. What starts as high drama quickly unravels into a surreal, heat-soaked fantasy. Her emotions become a kind of power, literal magic, transporting her into a world of cactus fields, sensual choreography, and rotating novios played by familiar faces like Michel Duval and El Malilla. The aesthetic is part high fashion, part satire, part dream sequence. It's raunchy, glamorous, and deeply self-aware, a reflection of DANNA's willingness to turn vulnerability into spectacle on her own terms. Though DANNA's catalog has long leaned pop, 'Khe Calor' shifts the focus from heartbreak to embodiment. The mood is looser. The lyrics, less filtered. She hints that more experimentation is on the way. 'I'm really into techno right now,' she says. 'For now, I'll just leave it at that.' She won't say what's coming next, only that it will sound different. And that's the point. ' "I care deeply about my work, but I'm learning to let go. To just put the music out, even if it's not perfect." DANNA ' Her career has never followed a single lane. After breaking out in Latin America as a child star, she pivoted to music, releasing projects like Sie7e+ and K.O., both of which blended radio-friendly hooks with sonic risk. She didn't follow a typical path into music. After years in front of the camera, shifting into full-time artistry required a new kind of discipline. 'I'm such a perfectionist,' she says. 'I care deeply about my work, but I'm learning to let go. To just put the music out, even if it's not perfect. The best advice I can give any new artist is just put your music out there.' That shift, from control to confidence, is what's fueling this latest chapter. Today, she's just as likely to talk about her creative direction as she is her spiritual routine. She travels with Palo Santo and quartz. She detoxes from her phone. She cries 'a lot' and laughs at how predictable that is: 'I'm a Cancer, of course.' And while this personal evolution is clear, so is her cultural grounding. Born and raised in Mexico City, DANNA has made it a priority to amplify her roots through language, fashion, and collaboration. Whether performing in Spanish on mainstream U.S. stages or working with local artisans and designers, she's intentional about what and who she brings with her. 'Music is art. Tequila is art. They go hand in hand,' she says of her recent collaboration with Don Julio. 'So it's important to me, collaborating with a brand that aligns with my art, my music, my culture.' Now 30, she doesn't claim to have it all figured out. But she does sound like someone who knows what she wants and doesn't need permission to get there. 'I feel so confident. … I feel like I'm in my best moment.'
