USA TODAY Sports puts Nebraska at No. 21 in 2025 College Football Re-Rank

USA TODAY Sports released its College Football Re-Rank for the 2025 season, taking a look at all 136 FBS teams and determining the appropriate rankings ahead of the first game of the season. According to the re-rankings, Nebraska is now ranked No. 21 on the list. The Huskers finished last season 7-6, earning their first trip to a bowl game since 2016 and taking down Boston College 20-15 in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. Although it marked Nebraska's best season since 2016, the team, which finished above .500, fell just short of the final top 25. The Huskers received 23 votes in the AP Top 25 poll and 19 votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll. But USA TODAY Sports placed Nebraska at No. 21, becoming one of seven Big Ten teams to find itself in the top 25 at the start of 2025. The list also includes ten from the SEC, three from the Big 12, three from the ACC, Boise State of the Mountain West, and Notre Dame, which remains independent. The top of USA TODAY Sports' preseason rankings aligns with the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. Bowl Projections also vary for the Huskers heading into the season, with ESPN projecting Nebraska to play in the SRS Distribution Bowl while CBS Sports projected the team to head to the ReliaQuest Bowl. Regardless of the rankings, the Huskers enter the season with high expectations. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule excited about all-black uniforms against USC

It was at the end of last week that the Nebraska football team unveiled new black alternate uniforms for the 2025 season. The Huskers' new look consists of black jerseys with white numbers and white sleeve stripes, black pants with white stripes, and a white helmet featuring a black stripe, a black face mask, and the "N" decal also in black. Nebraska is set to wear the new uniforms against USC on Nov. 1, with the theme of the game being "Paint it Black." The Huskers did not wear any alternate uniforms in 2024. Their last alternates were worn in 2023 against Northwestern, featuring a red jersey with a blue outline on the numbers and inscriptions on the sleeve stripes to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium. Head coach Matt Rhule met with the media over the weekend and expressed a strong opinion on the Cornhuskers' new look, as well as his hope that the USC kickoff will be a night game. 'Especially versus a great team like USC. We're anticipating that being a night game. There's nothing worse than black jerseys in the middle of the day, in my opinion. So, if you have a night game, you have black jerseys, it's a couple days after Halloween… So we said, 'If we're gonna do it.'' This is Nebraska's first all-black version since 2020, when the Huskers wore a similar color scheme against Illinois. The Huskers donned black jerseys four times in the modern era, the first being back in 2013 against UCLA. While Rhule is excited, he also made it clear that the jersey won't help you win games. '... wearing this jersey or that jersey doesn't make you play better. If it does, then we have way bigger problems to begin with, but we have a right to do cool things.' Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, Aug. 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT. Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes, and opinions.
