Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS-Sadao CIQ road project ahead of schedule
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the RM141.57 million project had reached 47 per cent completion as of April 29.
'The site possession date for this project was June 21, 2024, and it is scheduled for completion in September this year... however, I've been informed by the contractor and those involved in the project that it may be completed slightly earlier.
'That's good news. If we can complete it ahead of schedule, that would be great... as of April 29, the physical progress stands at 47 per cent, which is slightly behind. However, I've been informed that it can still be completed as planned,' he said.
He spoke to reporters today after inspecting the progress of the project.
Nanta said the project includes the construction of a 900-metre dual carriageway with six lanes and a 300-metre service road leading to the Bukit Kayu Hitam General Operations Force (GOF) Tactical Headquarters.
He said the project also involves demolishing old buildings and facilities and replacing them with new structures for the 5th Battalion Camp of the Border Regiment in Bukit Kayu Hitam.
'It also involves the construction of the final control post building and a covered entrance gate,' he said, adding that the project aims to enhance connectivity, mobility, and access for people in border areas and ensure a high-quality, safe, and comfortable road network.
In November 2023, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his then Thai counterpart, Srettha Thavisin, visited the project site. Both leaders agreed to expedite its implementation.

Malaysia to host Cambodia-Thai border talks as mediator
JOHOR BAHRU: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin will contact his Cambodian and Thai counterparts today to finalise arrangements for the upcoming General Boundary Committee (GBC) Meeting, set to be hosted by Malaysia. The discussions aim to resolve ongoing border disputes under a ceasefire agreement mediated by Malaysia last month. Khaled Nordin stated, 'Prior to the Zoom meeting, I will contact each of them individually to convey Malaysia's readiness to host the meeting. After that, we will hold a joint session to determine the discussion agenda to ensure the meeting next week proceeds smoothly.' Senior military officials from Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia will first convene at Wisma Perwira in Kuala Lumpur for preliminary talks ahead of the ministerial-level meeting. The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) confirmed the GBC Meeting will take place in Kuala Lumpur from August 4 to 7, following Thailand's request for a neutral venue after initially planning to hold it in Phnom Penh. Thai Army invites Red Cross to inspect detained Cambodian soldiers
BANGKOK: The Royal Thai Army has extended an invitation to international bodies, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to inspect Cambodian soldiers currently held in Thai custody. This move comes in response to accusations from Cambodia alleging that Thailand subjected its captured soldiers to inhumane treatment prior to their repatriation following a recent ceasefire agreement. Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree (pic), spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, dismissed Cambodia's claims on Aug 2 as "distorted accusations." He clarified that while a ceasefire had been abruptly implemented, the armed conflict has not yet genuinely concluded. Therefore, under international law, the military's process of temporary detention remains permissible under the Geneva Conventions. "The Royal Thai Army has a plan and is fully prepared to invite international organisations such as the ICRC to observe the well-being of the detained prisoners of war," Maj Gen Winthai stated. He affirmed that Thailand's procedures are "completely within the framework" of the Geneva Conventions. The invitation, he explained, is a proactive measure driven by an understanding that Cambodia might attempt to "distort this issue to undermine the credibility of the Thai military." Consequently, representatives from both UNHCR and ICRC are welcome to conduct inspections through established international legal channels.
