Sena (UBT) MP seeks relief for Sassoon Dock fishers, meets Union minister

Hindustan Times5 days ago
MUMBAI: As tensions escalate between the fishing community and the port authorities at Sassoon Dock, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant has stepped in to end the stand-off. Advocating for the Kolis, traders and others involved in the fish trade at Mumbai's largest dock, Sawant met Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday, and pressed for a resolution to the crisis without the fisher folk being evicted. Also present at the meeting was Sushilkumar Singh, chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA), which is pushing to evict fisher folk from the 60 warehouses it owns at the dock. At the heart of the crisis is a move by the MbPA to charge rent at Ready Reckoner rates, which the community says is out of their reach. Backed by a police team, the MbPA arrived at the dock on Tuesday, to evict the fisher folk but had to retreat due to fierce resistance.
In a post on X on Wednesday evening, Sawant shared details of his meeting with Sonwal and Singh. He said, 'In this meeting, I conveyed the ground reality of the fishermen community regarding the unjust actions being taken on the warehouses at Sassoon Dock and other pending matters. I requested that the eviction action against poor fishermen from warehouse number 158 be stopped. The minister agreed to this request. He also assured that the decision taken on June 12, 2015, by the then Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will soon be implemented. This decision will be a great relief and bring justice to the fishing community.'
HT was the first to report, on June 28 and July 8, on how the MbPA's ultimatum over rents could see the port authorities evicting the fishing community from its warehouses, which double as critical fish-processing centres before the catch goes out into the supply chain.
Calling Wednesday's meeting a significant success, Sawant said he is committed to protecting the interests of those who contribute to the national economy through fish exports and trade. HT reached out to Sawant, but he was unavailable for comment.
Koli leaders said Sawant emphasised the non-implementation of a key decision taken in 2015 under the chairmanship of then Union shipping minister, Nitin Gadkari. The decision, taken on June 12, 2015, had mandated the repossession of godowns by rightful tenants.
Another key issue raised by Sawant at the meeting was the reinstatement of Godown No 158 and galas to their 'rightful sub-tenants'.
Another key issue raised was the steep hike in licence fees by MbPA, which Sawant said contradicted earlier assurances made in a meeting on January 27, 2021. The enhanced fees have led to the closure of several fish auction houses. He urged the Union minister to roll the fees back to their 2001 levels, to between ₹7,000 and ₹8,000 a year.
Sawant also requested that construction work on both the new and old jetties be completed by July 31, 2025, to ensure uninterrupted fish trade activities.
On the issue of fish trade timings, Sawant urged that early morning trading begin only from 4:30am, as overnight operations are leading to various problems, including safety concerns.

'Face Me, Why Call Him': Amit Shah As Oppn Presses For PM Modi's Presence In Rajya Sabha

Last Updated: Opposition parties created a ruckus and walked out of the Rajya Sabha, demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be present in the House as Amit Shah was speaking. Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the Opposition parties to face him instead of calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as several parties demanded the PM's presence in the Upper House. 'The brutal attack in Pahalgam by Pakistani terrorists was responded to sternly and decisively by India through Operation Sindoor. I am also responding to where is PM Modi (talking about opposition sloganeering). Face me, why do you want to call PM, you would be in more trouble if he comes, but they don't understand," Shah said. Leaders of opposition parties demanded PM Modi to be present in the Rajya Sabha and later staged a walkout while Shah was addressing the House on Operation Sindoor and the recent Operation Mahadev in Jammu and Kashmir. I am here addressing their concerns. PM Modi is very much in office. If I can respond and clarify, then… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) July 30, 2025 The home minister's speech was interrupted by opposition parties. Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said, 'I am standing to demand that PM Modi must address Rajya Sabha- which is the demand of all of Opposition. Questions that we raised were directly addressed to him as well." Kharge said PM Modi's absence from the discussions was disrespectful to the Rajya Sabha. Shah retorted by saying that on several occasions, the Congress have not allowed Kharge to speak. 'The opposition's demands are not fair. It was decided that anyone from the government can respond to the questions," Shah added. As the opposition leaders walked out of the House, Shah said they cannot listen to the debate, as for so many years, they did not respond to terrorism in order to protect their vote bank. Amit Shah informed the Rajya Sabha that Operation Mahadev led to the elimination of three terrorists. 'Together, Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev form the sternest response to terrorism seen anywhere in the world," he said. The debate on Operation Sindoor began in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, while the Lok Sabha took up the discussion on Monday. The operation was launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. view comments First Published: July 30, 2025, 19:08 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Over Rs 11 lakh crore in loans disbursed to women self-help groups by banks: Minister

New Delhi: Loans worth over Rs 11 lakh crore have been disbursed to women self-help groups (SHGs) through formal financial institutions under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday. This milestone reflects the central government's strong commitment under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards inclusive rural development, financial empowerment of women, and fostering self-reliance at the village level, he added. Under the Ministry of Rural Development's DAY-NRLM, rural poor women across the country are strengthening their livelihoods through robust community institutions. Through SHGs, they are being provided collateral-free loans, interest subsidies, and other financial support, enabling them to start their own businesses and increase their incomes. A repayment rate of over 98 per cent clearly demonstrates the initiative's credibility, discipline, and efficient management, said Chouhan. Appreciating the banking community's support, Chouhan said that banking partners have played a remarkable role in turning the dreams of millions of rural women into reality. The tireless efforts of 'Bank Sakhis' have facilitated SHG-bank linkage and ensured timely loan repayment. He further said that the main contribution of this banking partnership is the provision of easy loans to SHGs under the priority sector lending, along with accessible banking services for SHG members through simplified processes. The initiative also promotes Aadhaar and mobile seeding of bank accounts and enhances financial literacy. The repayment systems are being strengthened in the country. 'Bank Sakhis' are increasingly assisting with transactions, loan applications, and documentations, as well as creating awareness about insurance, pensions, and other financial schemes. Moreover, the Community Based Repayment Mechanism (CBRM) is being fortified to ensure timely loan recovery under this significant programme. The central government initiatives like DAY-NRLM and 'Lakhpati Didi' are transforming the economic status of millions of women in rural India, he mentioned.
