Withdraw water tariff hike, Penang MCA urges CM
The party wants Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to withdraw plans for another possible water tariff hike and use the government-owned Penang Water Supply Corporation's (PBAPP) financial performance to ease the public's struggles against the cost of living.
Chan Wooi Jin, vice-chairman of the party's election preparation and scrutiny committee said instead of delaying the possibility of another water tariff hike to next year, it should be cancelled outright.
'Why raise the water tariff again? On what grounds does the state government justify this when PBAPP's net profit last year was RM144.17mil?' Chan asked.
Chan pointed out that water tariffs were already raised in February 2024, and said it was unfair to impose another hike so soon.
'PBAPP is not short of money. It just launched a RM5bil sukuk programme to fund major projects. And yet they are still thinking of raising tariffs?'
He said PBAPP should focus on improving operational efficiency and trimming unnecessary costs instead of transferring financial pressures to consumers.
The sukuk programme, the first of its kind by a state-linked water supply operator, was announced earlier this week.
It is designed to support long-term infrastructure works such as the RM2.1bil Water Contingency Plan 2030 and the newly launched Mengkuang water treatment plant, without over reliance on bank loans or further tariff hikes.
'Water is a basic need. Any hike will hit everyone directly. The government should be finding ways to lighten the people's burden and not add to it,' he said.
He urged Chow to withdraw the proposal in full and not merely postpone it.
On Tuesday (July 8), Chow, who is also PBAPP chairman, announced that he planned to ask the federal government to delay an impending water tariff hike in Penang to at least the middle of next year, even though it would cost PBAPP RM40mil.
The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) announced on Wednesday (July 9) that as of June 30, it received applications to review water tariffs from PBAPP and operators in nine other states, which are Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Pahang.
The commission added that it was still considering the applications.

Flourishing industry: Anwar bottle-feeding a calf at the Perak Farm Fresh dairy complex. Also present is Farm Fresh chief operations officer Azmi Zainal. — Bernama IPOH: Assets and funds worth up to RM5bil have been recovered from corruption cases in the past year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said these were recovered from ministries, government agencies and politicians. 'There are taunts and cynicism towards the government's hard stance on fighting corruption. 'But over the past year, we have recovered RM4bil to RM5bil in assets and funds seized from corruption cases across ministries, departments, Immigration, Customs and even politicians. 'This is due to our competence and willingness to take action (against corruption). 'This is also only possible with good governance,' he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the RM6.26bil Ipoh Sentral project. On another matter, the Prime Minister expressed hope to see more developments and projects that are in line with the Madani concept. 'Our nation must always be concerned and compassionate towards the people; otherwise, Madani is nothing more than a slogan. 'We need to have aspects that can elevate culture, civilisation and new technologies of the people,' he added. Anwar also hopes to see unique-looking buildings that are suitable for the country's environment, current needs, culture and heritage. 'We want to see Ipoh have a special landmark, with cultural vibrancy rooted in heritage, yet modern and embracing new technologies, digitalisation and artificial intelligence,' he added. At an event earlier, Anwar reaffirmed that those responsible for the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir will be brought to justice but called on parties not to manipulate the case in ways that create negative perceptions. While giving assurance that no individual will be allowed to escape accountability, the Prime Minister said the case, however, should not resort to insulting specific individuals. 'The police are investigating (the matter), and I have made it clear that it doesn't matter who (is involved); they will be investigated,' he said when launching the Madani Dairy Entrepreneurs Carnival yesterday, Bernama reported. The Prime Minister said the government will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the nation's food security, including the dairy industry. Expressing pride in the achievements of local dairy producer Farm Fresh Bhd, he praised the company for its contribution to the dairy sector, job creation for Malaysians and commitment to corporate social responsibility. Anwar also pointed out that Malaysia's close ties with its regional partners, especially within Asean, have opened up broad opportunities for cooperation in various fields, including agriculture and dairy. He noted that this sector's success is also supported by the readiness of the private sector, the resilience of local entrepreneurs, and the integration of modern technology, including artificial intelligence.

Penang offers free homes to 23 Ladang Sungai Kechil families under RMKu
NIBONG TEBAL: The Penang government has resolved a decade-long housing dispute for 23 families in Ladang Sungai Kechil by providing free homes under the Rumah MutiaraKu (RMKu) project. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed each family will receive a Type C1 single-storey terrace house measuring 750 square feet. Three temples on the original site will also be rebuilt as part of the agreement. The land acquisition process for 6.146 acres was finalised last year under the Land Acquisition Act 1960. A developer has been selected, with construction expected to begin early next year pending planning approval. Chow announced this after witnessing the signing of the Joint Development Agreement between LPNPP and Sierra Residences (M) Sdn Bhd. Offer letters were also handed to buyers of Residensi Rambai Indah and Harbour View Residence projects during the ceremony. The project will include 85 houses, with priority given to the 23 units for affected residents. The remaining 62 houses will be sold to interested buyers. Residents will not need to relocate during construction due to sufficient buffer land availability. V. Thangaraja, a resident, expressed relief after years of uncertainty over their settlement. He highlighted the emotional struggle as families had lived there for over a century. S. Naris, 36, thanked the state government for its persistent efforts in securing permanent homes for them. The resolution marks a significant step in addressing long-standing housing concerns in the area. - Bernama

Up to RM5bil in assets, funds recovered from graft cases in past year, says PM
IPOH: Up to RM5bil in assets and funds have been recovered from corruption cases in the past one year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said these were recovered from cases involving ministries, government agencies and politicians. "There are taunts and criticisms towards the government's hard stance on fighting corruption. "Over the past one year, we have recovered RM4bil to RM5bil in assets and funds seized from corruption cases, across ministries, departments, Immigration, Customs and even politicians," he said in his speech during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral project near the Ipoh Railway Station here on Saturday (Aug 16). "This was due to our willingness to take action to clean up governance," he added. Separately, Anwar also called on developers of mega development projects to have unique buildings that are suitable with Malaysia's environment, current needs and culture. He said designs should not just be copied from other countries and to take into consideration its suitability in the local environment. "We see in Washington DC, there are impressive buildings but it is culturally barren. "As we progress, we often celup (copy) ideas from others but these can feel foreign," he said, adding that weather and culture could be aspects to be considered into the design. "We need special landmarks with cultural vibrancy, modern and are different from the usual scenes of a concrete jungle in a major city that we can be proud of," he added. He said that developments and projects must also benefit the people. "They need to be able to fulfil the current needs of the people," he added.
