UNC football coach Bill Belichick gives early thoughts on the transfer quarterback
Lopez committed to North Carolina and immediately entered a quarterback battle with Max Johnson and freshman Bryce Baker. The 6-foot-0 QB from James Clemens HS in Madison, Alabama, was a three-star prospect out of high school and a three-star prospect, just a two-point differential in rating, according to 247Sports.

However, Belichick loves the underrated player that he believes can evolve to something better than anyone else believes he is. Now, coach has had time to evaluate that decision and spoke on on what he thought of Lopez.
Quoted via Inside Carolina, this is what Belichick had to say when asked about what he thought about Gio Lopez:
"Gio was really productive at South Alabama. He's a dual-threat quarterback. He's had plenty of production, yardage, and both running game and passing game experience. Tough kid, played well against some good competition, teams like LSU. So looks like he's definitely ready for this level. And we're excited to work with him, as we are with everybody else."
Last season, in Lopez's freshman year at South Alabama, he threw for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns with five interceptions. He finished the season with a 150.8 QB rating and a 66% completion percentage. He averaged 8.2 yards per throw on the mid-major squad.

Lopez will now enter Power 4 territory and could have the opportunity to be the first starting quarterback under the Bill Belichick era. There is still plenty of practice to go between now and the opening kickoff against TCU in September.

We will get our first look at the 2025 NFL Draft class in game action, as well as free agents who changed teams during the offseason. Here are our top five things to watch for during this weekend's slate. Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter playing both sides of the ball: Hunter is one of the most hyped-up rookies in recent memory, thanks to his expected attempt to play both offense and defense. Jacksonville has listed him as a starting WR and a second-string CB on its depth chart. It will be interesting to see how the Jaguars' coaching staff manages his workload. How he performs at each position will likely dictate where he gets the most snaps. Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler compete for Saints starting QB role: New Orleans is not tipping its hand as to who has the advantage, and has even promoted Jake Haener as in the mix. Haener is likely a longshot, but Shough and Rattler seem to be on pretty even footing. Whoever plays best in their game on Sunday should get the upper hand, but the battle could last through all three preseason matchups. Ben Johnson leads new-look Bears offense: Johnson was the hot name in this year's head coaching cycle, and he is now paired up with 2024 No. 1 overall pick QB Caleb Williams. Chicago remodeled its offensive line, and added a couple of new rookie weapons in tight end Colston Loveland and WR Luther Burden III. The pressure will be on Johnson to succeed quickly and get the most out of Williams and the Bears' offense. ESPN purchases NFL Network — what to know The NFL and ESPN have announced a non-binding agreement that ESPN will acquire NFL Network and certain other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL, including RedZone and NFL Fantasy. In exchange, the NFL will receive a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN. More terms of the agreement: NFL Network will be owned and operated by ESPN and fully integrated into ESPN DTC. NFL RedZone will still be available on NFL+, but ESPN will distribute it on traditional television. NFL Fantasy Football will merge with ESPN Fantasy Football. ESPN's platforms will license an additional three NFL games per season to air on NFL Network. Elite, 4-star PF Julius Avent includes Spartans as a finalist
Michigan State basketball is one of five schools still in the running for a big-time power forward prospect in the 2026 class. Julius Avent of Oradell, N.J. revealed his five finalists on Wednesday, which happened to include the Spartans. According to a social media post from On3 recruiting insider Joe Tipton, Avent is down to the following five finalists: Michigan State, Xavier, Seton Hall, Penn State and Providence. Avent is a four-star prospect in the 2026 class, according to 247Sports. He holds a recruiting rating of 96.94 and ranks as the No. 87 overall prospect in the class. He is also listed as the No. 12 power forward and No. 3 player from New Jersey. Michigan State is one of nearly 10 schools to extend him an offer, according to 247Sports. Along with his other four finalists, he also has offers from Mississippi State, Villanova, Washington and George Washington. Avent is scheduled to take an official visit to Michigan State on August 30. It will be the first of five official visits to each of his finalists, according to 247Sports.
