On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Simo's new role as CEO of applications. She will report directly to him after transitioning out of her current role at Instacart later this year.
'In her new role, Fidji will focus on enabling our 'traditional' company functions to scale as we enter a next phase of growth,' Altman said in a blog post. 'Fidji brings a rare blend of leadership, product, and operational expertise, and genuine commitment to ensuring our technology benefits everyone.'
Before joining OpenAI's executive team, Simo served as a member of its board of directors. She will now concentrate on scaling the company's 'traditional' functions as it moves into its next phase of growth. Simo's addition signals OpenAI's potential expansion beyond ChatGPT. Previous reports have suggested the company is exploring ventures into social media platforms.
'This organization has the potential of accelerating human potential at a pace never seen before, and I am deeply committed to shaping these applications toward the public good,' Simo said in the blog post.

The 39-year-old is a first-generation high school graduate from the fishing village of Sète in France. As Fast Company previously reported, Simo was named after a perfume worn by her mother, a boutique owner. She graduated from one of France's most prestigious business schools, HEC Paris, and began her career at eBay in 2007.
Prior to Instacart, Simo served as a senior executive at Facebook, working closely with her former mentor Mark Zuckerberg and eventually leading the Facebook app prior to the company's rebrand to Meta. During her tenure there, from 2011 to 2021, she held roles including director of product management and vice president of video, games, and monetization.
In January 2021, Simo became CEO of Maplebear Inc., Instacart's parent company. She went on to lead Instacart's highly anticipated IPO in 2023, which raised $660 million and valued the company at $9.9 billion.
While serving as CEO of Instacart, Simo cofounded the Metrodora Institute after being diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and endometriosis. The clinic and research center is dedicated to treating women with neuroimmune axis disorders by collecting data from consenting patients and sharing it with partner research institutions, in hopes of finding a cure. These disorders include conditions in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, such as lupus, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and long COVID.

OpenAI's GPT-5 is out. Here's what you need to know.
OpenAI's ( GTP-5 is officially available. The company's most advanced AI model yet, and available now at OpenAI says GPT-5 is a step up from its prior GPT models across a number of areas, including writing, coding, health knowledge, and more. According to CEO Sam Altman, GPT-5 is like speaking to a "legitimate PhD-level expert.' It's also, the company says, less prone to hallucinations than previous releases. The biggest change you'll notice when using GPT-5 is that it is the only model you can use. You'll no longer be able to use GPT-4o or any other GPT version. But OpenAI says you shouldn't be too concerned about that. That's because GPT-5 can automatically switch between providing quick, efficient answers to queries and taking time to reason longer over more complex questions, depending on how you ask them. It's a helpful feature, to be sure, since you don't have to take the time to decide whether you're using the right model for your particular ask. If you're a Plus or Team user, you also have the option of selecting GPT-5 Thinking as your base model. But free users are out of luck. When you run through your usage limit, ChatGPT will automatically switch to smaller, less resource-intensive GPT-5 models. According to OpenAI, GPT-5 offers enhanced writing skills that include more literary depth and rhythm. It can also help you translate information from things like complex medical reports into plain English, making them far easier to understand. Of course, the model isn't bulletproof, so you'll want to double-check any medical information and run it by your doctor before making any decisions. GPT-5 is also more adept at coding than earlier GPT models. It can put together things like basic games and apps with just a few prompts and details. And unlike previous versions of GPT, GPT-5 gives your apps a bit of stylistic flair, rather than making them feel dull and flat. That should prove helpful for the types of folks who are interested in 'vibe coding,' or writing software using natural language prompts rather than actual code. GPT-5 is also more personal thanks to its ability to connect to Google (GOOG, GOOGL) Calendar, Gmail, and Contacts. In one demo, OpenAI showed how GPT-5 can help pull together a schedule based on your calendar and travel information from your email. It's the kind of helpfulness that is certain to attract some users, while turning off others who prefer to keep their more sensitive data private and away from third-party apps. Importantly, OpenAI says GPT-5 is less sycophantic than its predecessors. The company originally released an update to GPT-4o in April but quickly pulled it back after the chatbot began being overly flattering to users. It also, the company said, was validating users' doubts, fueling anger, and urging impulsive actions. Reports indicate that some users can experience emotional spirals when interacting with overly sycophantic bots. That should change with GPT-5. 'In targeted sycophancy evaluations using prompts specifically designed to elicit sycophantic responses, GPT‑5 meaningfully reduced sycophantic replies (from 14.5% to less than 6%),' the company said in its release announcing the new model. 'At times, reducing sycophancy can come with reductions in user satisfaction, but the improvements we made cut sycophancy by more than half while also delivering other measurable gains, so users continue to have high-quality, constructive conversations — in line with our goal to help people use ChatGPT well.' While GPT-5 is an important release, it won't put OpenAI in the AI driver's seat for long. OpenAI just had its best week in months. And it desperately needed it. The San Francisco-based company, best known for ChatGPT, has spent much of June and July in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. First came the talent raid: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg opened the checkbook, reportedly offering hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation to lure away OpenAI's top researchers. Several jumped ship. CEO Sam Altman publicly lashed out, calling Meta's approach mercenary and accusing it of having no culture. Then came the failed acquisition of Windsurf, a hot AI startup specializing in AI-native data infrastructure, that OpenAI had been in talks to buy. Google swooped in at the last minute and closed the deal instead, a humiliating loss in the high-stakes AI arms race. And to top it off, OpenAI had to delay the release of its long-promised open-source models after intense pressure from developers, fueling criticism that the company was falling behind rivals like Meta, which has aggressively released its own models for free. Internally, things looked chaotic. Leadership handed all employees a week off, and leaked memos described a company under siege, a fortress attacked on all sides, or worse, a house on fire. The once-untouchable AI darling was starting to look rattled, and the perception that Meta had stolen its momentum was growing. This week, OpenAI finally started playing offense again. First, it released the long-awaited open-source models, a move aimed at appeasing developers and reasserting its relevance in the open AI ecosystem. Just three days later came the bigger swing: the launch of GPT-5, billed as the most powerful AI chatbot on the market.
