Instacart CEO Fidji Simo is heading to OpenAI: Here's what you need to know
The woman behind Instacart's successful IPO, Fidji Simo, is joining OpenAI's C-suite. 'Work-life balance is your problem, not the employer's responsibility': Skims boss Emma Grede's claim is sparking controversy ACM Awards 2025: How to watch the Academy of Country Music Awards live online or on a smart TV for free None of the objects on top of the Oval Office mantle were made in the U.S. On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced Simo's new role as CEO of applications. She will report directly to him after transitioning out of her current role at Instacart later this year. 'In her new role, Fidji will focus on enabling our 'traditional' company functions to scale as we enter a next phase of growth,' Altman said in a blog post. 'Fidji brings a rare blend of leadership, product, and operational expertise, and genuine commitment to ensuring our technology benefits everyone.' Before joining OpenAI's executive team, Simo served as a member of its board of directors. She will now concentrate on scaling the company's 'traditional' functions as it moves into its next phase of growth. Simo's addition signals OpenAI's potential expansion beyond ChatGPT. Previous reports have suggested the company is exploring ventures into social media platforms. 'This organization has the potential of accelerating human potential at a pace never seen before, and I am deeply committed to shaping these applications toward the public good,' Simo said in the blog post. Here's everything you need to know about Silicon Valley's latest executive. The 39-year-old is a first-generation high school graduate from the fishing village of Sète in France. As Fast Company previously reported, Simo was named after a perfume worn by her mother, a boutique owner. She graduated from one of France's most prestigious business schools, HEC Paris, and began her career at eBay in 2007. Prior to Instacart, Simo served as a senior executive at Facebook, working closely with her former mentor Mark Zuckerberg and eventually leading the Facebook app prior to the company's rebrand to Meta. During her tenure there, from 2011 to 2021, she held roles including director of product management and vice president of video, games, and monetization. In January 2021, Simo became CEO of Maplebear Inc., Instacart's parent company. She went on to lead Instacart's highly anticipated IPO in 2023, which raised $660 million and valued the company at $9.9 billion. While serving as CEO of Instacart, Simo cofounded the Metrodora Institute after being diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and endometriosis. The clinic and research center is dedicated to treating women with neuroimmune axis disorders by collecting data from consenting patients and sharing it with partner research institutions, in hopes of finding a cure. These disorders include conditions in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, such as lupus, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and long COVID. Sean 'Diddy' Combs Trial Sees Jury Finalization Kicked to Monday So No One Gets 'Cold Feet'
The selection of the final 12 men and women who will make up the jury for Sean 'Diddy' Combs' federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial has been pushed to Monday to prevent those selected from getting 'cold feet' about hearing the high-profile and closely-watched case that could end with the rap mogul walking free or behind bars for the rest of his life. Friday was the day that attorneys for the prosecution and defense would further question the 43 men and women from the jury pool, whittling that group down to 12 jurors and six alternates by exercising their peremptory strikes. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian had already conducted one-on-one interviews with all of them over this past week, ensuring that they could remain unbiased and open-minded while hearing evidence in the high-profile case. Many prospective jurors expressed that they had previous knowledge of Combs and particularly of the footage leaked on CNN of his attacking his ex-girlfriend in a nearly decade-old incident at a Los Angeles hotel. More from The Hollywood Reporter ACM Awards 2025: Full List of Winners With Jury Nearly Finalized, Sean "Diddy" Combs' Prosecutors Say They May Have Lost Key Witness Range Music Establishes Composer Division, Hires Jeff Jernigan 'The Court will hold a hearing on May 9, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. in Courtroom 26A, Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse, 500 Pearl Street, New York, NY 10007 for the parties to exercise their peremptory strikes. If the parties have any remaining issues that need to be resolved before the start of trial, they should try their best to raise them by May 8, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.,' a memo from Judge Subramanian read. Despite Combs' massive fame, enough jurors passed muster, and the threshold of men and women to sit on the jury was met on time. Until this morning, it seemed that opening arguments in the anticipated eight-week trial would begin first thing on Monday morning. But lead defense attorney Marc Agnifilo expressed concerns Friday morning that if they were to finalize the 12 jurors and six alternates today, some of the selected jurors may get a case of 'cold feet' over the weekend and wish to excuse themselves, leading to further delays. Judge Subramanian agreed that this threat was valid and adjourned the court for the day. Final jury selection will take place first thing on Monday, and the court will go immediately into opening statements once the jury is seated. The government has accused Combs of using his billion-dollar business as a 'criminal enterprise' in which he and several co-conspirators under his purview engaged in sex trafficking, forced labor, interstate transportation for purposes of prostitution, coercion and enticement to engage in prostitution, narcotics offenses, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice. The federal prosecutors laid out their case in a five-count indictment, which was made public just ahead of Combs' arrest in Manhattan in September and saw additions made to it in subsequent months. Combs has pleaded not guilty to the charge and denied all accusations against him. In court this week, the defense team made it clear that in terms of Combs' relationship with Ventura, who is listed as Victim-1 on the indictment and who plans to testify under her real name, they will paint a picture of a relationship where the violence was not one-sided, but that both Ventura and Combs committed violent acts towards one another throughout their on-off relationship. '[The defense team] is going to take the position that there was mutual violence in their relationship … hitting, on both sides: DV (domestic violence),' Agnifilo said amid a debate on the parameters of Ventura's cross-examination vis-a-vis her medical history, 'We are absolutely going to admit to domestic violence. But at what point does it become coercive?' Ventura is one of four anticipated alleged victims the prosecution intends to have taken the stand to testify against Combs. However, the prosecution admitted on Thursday that it is unsure if one of the alleged victims will turn up to court as they have lost contact with her this past week. Bitcoin price nears $100,000 for the first time in months: Here's why crypto is rising today
The price of Bitcoin is nearing the psychologically important price point of $100,000 this morning—a level the cryptocurrency has not seen since early February. None of the objects on top of the Oval Office mantle were made in the U.S. ACM Awards 2025: How to watch the Academy of Country Music Awards live online or on a smart TV for free Why the guards who protect the conclave are wearing those crazy uniforms As of the time of this writing, one Bitcoin is currently trading at over $99,800. That's up nearly 3% in the last 24 hours and only $10,000 lower than the all-time high that the token reached earlier this year. Here's what you need to know about Bitcoin's most recent approach to six figures. Bitcoin is currently trading at less than $200 shy of $100,000 per coin as of the time of this writing. The cryptocurrency king hasn't traded at levels this high since early February, and it has not surpassed the $100,000 mark since the first few days of that month. While a $100,000 price point of Bitcoin doesn't have any underlying meaning on a fundamentals level, the passing of the six-figure barrier again will likely signal an important psychological threshold in many investors' minds. In late January, just a day before President Trump was sworn in for his second term, Bitcoin traded at an all-time high of over $109,114 per coin. The coin had first crossed the $100,000 threshold back in December 2024, shortly after then-president-elect Trump announced the crypto-friendly Paul Atkins as the new Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair. Atkins's appointment was seen as signaling a much more friendly regulatory environment with the new administration. In the days leading up to Trump's inauguration, Bitcoin continued to rise. But then came Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs in April—and along with the crash of global stock markets, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies crashed too. Last month, Bitcoin was trading at less than $75,000 per coin. Today's nearly $100,000 price, then, marks a staggering turnaround for Bitcoin from just over 30 days ago. It is up over 30% in the past month and up over 4% in the past five days alone, with the price of the digital asset up nearly 3% in just the last 24 hours. But what is the reason for Bitcoin's flirtation with the $100,000 mark today? Trade deals. notes that Bitcoin's rise to nearly $100,000 in the past 24 hours can be attributed to one main factor: trade deal optimism. Yesterday, President Trump teased on Truth Social that today there would be a 'big news conference' detailing a 'major trade deal' with a 'big' country. It was the president's first firm sign that one of his many promised trade deals was actually imminent. If the United States actually starts signing trade deals with other nations, investors will likely feel less uncomfortable about the state of the global economy and the economic uncertainty that Trump's tariffs have unleashed within America's borders and across the world. Then, early today, Trump took to Truth Social to follow up on his earlier post, announcing that the U.S. has entered into a 'full and comprehensive' agreement with the United Kingdom. While Trump didn't specify that it was a trade agreement, that is the most likely type of agreement he is talking about. The president added, 'Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!' Details of the U.S.-U.K. agreement are expected to be announced at a press conference at 10 a.m. ET today, reports CNBC. Anticipation of the U.S.-U.K. news further buoyed earlier optimism that, after nearly a month of uncertainty, major countries were closer than ever to working out new economic frameworks with the United States. Bitcoin isn't the only cryptocurrency to rise on trade deal optimism. As of the time of this writing, other major coins are also up, including: Ethereum: up 6.2% XRP: up 3.1% Solana: up 4.2% Meme coins are also up, including: Dogecoin: up 5.8% Shiba Inu: up 4.7% Of course, it's worth noting that cryptocurrencies are more volatile than more traditional assets, so there's no guarantee that Bitcoin will indeed cross the $100,000 threshold again. However, today's move closer to that mark will surely please jittery investors who have been forced to watch the crypto king decline by tens of thousands of dollars over the past several months.
