Amri's famous goal still haunts Van der Sar after 16 years

KUALA LUMPUR: "I know you — I think I've seen you before."
That was the reaction of former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar when he met his old tormentor, Amri Yahyah, at a recent event in Johor Bahru.
It was their first encounter in 16 years — since Amri scored that memorable long-range strike past the Dutchman during a friendly between Malaysia and Manchester United at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil in 2009.
In a video shared by a TikTok user, Van der Sar was seen shaking hands with Amri before immediately recognising the Malaysian forward.
"I was told he (Amri) would be coming. My friend showed me the video (of the goal). It was an amazing strike," said the former Champions League winner.
"I understand why you're so proud of it. All the fans were celebrating the goal. I think it's one of the best goals I've ever conceded. It's great to see you again."
In 2009, Van der Sar looked stunned and in disbelief after being beaten by Amri's left-footed volley — a goal still fondly remembered by Malaysian fans.
United had taken a 2-0 lead in the opening 30 minutes of that match through goals from Wayne Rooney and Nani, but Amri pulled one back just before half-time with a thunderous effort.
He then added a second after the break to level the match 2-2.
Michael Owen eventually netted a late winner to seal a 3-2 victory for the Red Devils.
In May, Manchester United returned to Malaysia for the first time since 2009, but were stunned 1-0 by the Asean All-Stars in Bukit Jalil.

Rexy believes all men's pairs at World C'ships evenly matched

Malaysia men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in action against South Korea's Kim Young-hyuk-Wang Chan during the first round of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: There are no clear favourites in the men's doubles in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. And national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky believes that all the pairs competing in the world meet are evenly matched. Based on form so far this year, South Korea's world No. 1 Seo Seung-jae-Kim Won-ho and Malaysia's world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are among the favourites for the title but Rexy is not counting out the other pairs. "No pair can win all the time. If you see in the China Open last month, Seung-jae-Won-ho and Aaron-Wooi Yik were beaten by Indonesia's scratch pair Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri, who then won the title," said Rexy. "All the pairs have an equal chance to win the gold in the World Championships. It comes down to which pair prepares the best for the tournament." Rexy also pointed out that Seung-jae, who will be the defending champion after capturing the title in the last edition in 2023 in Copenhagen, was no longer playing together with his partner at that time Kang Min-hyuk - showing that no pair has managed to remain consistent. "When Seung-jae won the gold with Min-hyuk in 2023, everyone were saying they were very strong," said Rexy. "But now, they have split up. This shows that no pair can be very consistent. "For me, staying hungry is very important. Players need to have the hunger to keep winning." Rexy is hoping to guide one of the Malaysian pairs under him to the title. Besides Aaron-Wooi Yik, the other Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) pairs that have qualified for the prestigious meet are world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and world No. 22 Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi. They will be joined by world No. 3 independent duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. Rexy believes the pairs have to be diligent about not just their on-court preparations but also what they need to do off it to enhance their chances of success in Paris. "For me, it's not just about preparing on technique or strategy but staying healthy before the tournament is also very important," said Rexy. "Our players need to eat and sleep well. They have to warm up and cool down properly before and after training sessions and matches to avoid injuries."

PM expects Malaysia to win Olympic gold in 2028

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expects Malaysia's gold medal wait to end at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Anwar, speaking at the Olympic House groundbreaking ceremony in Bukit Jalil, today, said the government has been supportive of sports through Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) led by Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. "I think the government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has been very proactive, very supportive. You have a good minister, who has been harassing me for more money, more funds. "Under Hannah, and now with Norza, well, we expect one gold medal at least from the Olympics. Otherwise, they'll be in trouble but, as I always tell my grandchildren, because sometimes, in chess, or football, which they are involved in, they get very upset when they lose. "I told them, that's not the spirit. The spirit, of course, is to win. "But sportsmanship, the term sportsmanship, is such a value-laden term. You try your best. You try to excel. But you accept it in a sportsmanship fashion." Last year, the Malaysian contingent returned empty-handed from the Paris Olympics despite the various support and assistance provided, including an allocation of RM13.283 million through the Road to Gold (RTG) programme since 2023. Malaysia have won 13 medals — eight silver and five bronze — since their first Olympic participation at the 1956 Melbourne Games. From this tally, badminton has delivered six silver and three bronze medals, while cycling and diving have each won one silver and one bronze. Malaysia's best achievement in the Olympic Games was finishing with four silvers and one bronze in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

Selangor FC coach Kinoshi backs new signings for Charity Shield clash vs JDT

SELANGOR FC head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi believes his team's new signings could be decisive in their Charity Shield clash against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). The match will take place at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tomorrow night. Kinoshi acknowledged JDT's strong home record but remains optimistic about Selangor's chances. He stated that while the new players lack M-League experience, their overall experience should help them adapt quickly. 'We have a lot of respect for JDT, they have dominated Malaysian football and they have many international experiences as well but we believe in our squad,' Kinoshi said. He added that the team has spent six to seven weeks integrating the new signings. Among the new arrivals are Zach Clough, Moses Raj, Willian Lira, Omid Musawi, Chrigor Moraes, and Picha Autra. Kinoshi urged his players to stay composed and enjoy the match. 'Just focus and enjoy the match and by that, I don't mean taking it lightly,' he explained. JDT have won the Charity Shield nine times, including seven straight from 2018 to 2024. The upcoming match is a long-awaited rematch after last season's fixture was cancelled. Selangor withdrew following criminal incidents, including an acid attack on winger Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim. JDT were awarded a 3-0 walkover victory as a result. - Bernama
