India imports nearly 10 lakh tonnes of DAP in Apr-Jun to meet local demand: Govt data
From April 2010, the Centre has implemented Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) policy for Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilisers. Under this, a fixed amount of subsidy, decided on an annual/bi-annual basis, is provided on notified P&K fertilisers depending on their nutrient content. The P&K fertilisers are covered under Open General License (OGL), and companies are free to import these fertilisers as per their business dynamics. "The gap between demand (requirement) and production of fertilizers is met through imports. Further, to minimize the impact of supply chain disruptions due to geopolitical factors, the fertilizer companies have entered in long term arrangements with DAP-producing nations to ensure continuous supplies," Patel said.
Imports of urea stood at 56.47 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, 70.42 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, 75.80 lakh tonnes during 2022-23, 91.36 lakh tonnes in 2021-22, and 98.28 lakh tonnes in 2020-2. PTI

1,240 National Highway Projects Worth Rs 7.8 Lakh Crore Underway: Nitin Gadkari
New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said 1,240 national highways projects in 29,406 km, costing Rs 7.80 lakh crore, are currently under construction in the country, of which 15,674 km have been completed. These projects are under various stages of construction and are scheduled for completion in a phased manner by the financial year 2028-29, Gadkari said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha. The ministry of road transport and highways is primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs) and Expressways. Responding to a separate question, the minister said that during the current Financial Year 2025-26, the government has prepared the annual plan for the development of about 19,555 km of NHs, including about 548 km in the State of West Bengal. He also said a total of 4,557 electric vehicle Public Charging Stations (PCSs) have been installed on the State/National Highways and Expressways in the country. The minister said the government has prioritised the maintenance of the existing national highways network and has evolved a mechanism to ensure maintenance and repair (M&R), including timely repair of potholes on all NHs, through accountable maintenance agencies. NHs' development projects are executed mainly in three modes-- Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT), Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC). Concession period, including maintenance for projects on Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT), is 15 to 20 years, and on Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) is generally 15 years. The Concessionaire is responsible for the maintenance of the respective NH stretches within the concession period of the project. Only in the case of EPC projects, the Defect Liability period (DLP) is 5 years for the bituminous pavement works and 10 years for concrete pavement works.

Central govt. has released over ₹8,000 cr. for Chennai Metro Rail's phase II project
The Centre has released more than ₹8,000 crore for the construction of the Chennai Metro Rail's upcoming phase II project. This year, the Centre has so far allocated ₹3,000 crore for the project. The fund for the phase II project, ₹63,246 crore, is drawn from the Centre, State, and bilateral and multilateral loans. Minister of State for Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, while responding to a question in the Lok Sabha about the funds allocated and released for the implementation of Metro Rail projects in the country, shared the funds released for Chennai Metro Rail project as well. The Centre released ₹5,219.57 crore in 2024-25 for the phase II project, whose network will connect major parts of the city, with its three corridors — Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. For 2025-2026, the Centre has allocated ₹8,445.8 crore. Of this, ₹3,000 crore has been released. Meanwhile, the phase II project has achieved a physical progress of 44.33%. In response to another question by AIADMK MP M. Thambidurai in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Sahu said, 'The Central government has approved Chennai Metro Rail's phase-II project as 50:50 Joint Venture Project, for 118.9 km at a cost of ₹63,246.4 crore in October 2024. Physical and financial progress of the project as on June 30, 2025, is 44.33% and 40.43% respectively.' Chennai Metro Rail officials are preparing to inaugurate the first elevated stretch of corridor 4, from Poonamallee to Porur, by December this year. The next stretch is expected to operate in 2026.

Centre flags misuse of agriculture urea in AP
Vijayawada: The Union Govt has raised serious concerns over the rising use of agriculture-grade urea in several states, including Andhra Pradesh, amid suspicions of diversion for non-agricultural and industrial purposes. Responding to directives from the Union agriculture secretary and cabinet secretary, the Andhra Pradesh agriculture department is preparing to issue strict guidelines to curb misuse. Director of agriculture Dilli Rao said the Centre observed a sharp increase in urea usage during the current Kharif season — 3.88 lakh metric tonnes compared to 3 lakh metric tonnes last year — an excess of 88,000 metric tonnes. Urea, intended solely for crop cultivation, is reportedly being diverted for use in industries such as plywood, varnish, paint, AdBlue solution, beer, illicit liquor manufacturing, aquaculture, poultry and animal feed. Some of it is allegedly smuggled across borders into neighbouring states. In Andhra Pradesh, several districts — including NTR, Eluru, Palnadu, Kurnool, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, Tirupati, ASR, Manyam, Visakhapatnam, and Srikakulam — share borders with Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, raising the risk of cross-border transportation. A high-level meeting, led by the chief secretary, will soon finalise enforcement strategies. Coordination with the transport department is also being planned to monitor movement across state lines. Dilli Rao added that district-level meetings will follow, involving district collectors, joint collectors and industrial stakeholders. Sales data will be scrutinised to identify unusual buying patterns.
