Khamis Salem Al Alwi's Instagram feed offers a breathtaking portal into a world where the sea's mystique and beauty is at its most cinematic. Filled with dreamy landscapes, shimmering waves, and glimpses into Oman's rich coastal life, his posts are more than images—they're a testament to a profound love for the ocean. For surfing lovers and sea enthusiasts alike, Khamis's reels serve as a treasure trove of hidden escapes and vibrant marine life, seen through the eyes of a true local. His cinematic captures reflect a heart that beats for the sea, celebrating both surfing and Oman's coastal heritage.
Through his visuals, Khamis professes his love affair with Oman's waters, where waves crash in a symphony of nature's power and grace. His adventures have taken him across many legendary spots—from Ras al Hadd to the depths of Al Jinns—but his posts often focus on Sur, a city he calls his true love. Here, Khamis finds sanctuary, embodying Oman's ancient maritime spirit and remaining one of its most captivating treasures.
Discovering Sur: Oman's Maritime Jewel
Sur holds a unique place in history. One of Oman's oldest cities, it was a vital hub across the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and Oman's waters. Historically, Sur thrived as a bustling port, fostering trade between the Arabian Peninsula, India, Southeast Asia, and Africa. In the 18th and 19th centuries, its port was lively, with over 150 ships sailing daily, promoting cultural exchange and prosperity.
Today, Sur is renowned for its shipbuilding tradition—crafting traditional dhows that have navigated oceans for centuries. Attractions include the Bilad Sur Castle, which once protected the city, and the Al Ayjah Fort, showcasing its strategic importance. Sunaysilah Fort offers panoramic views, while the Sur lighthouse marks its role as a maritime beacon. Verdant valleys like Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi invite exploration, and Ras Al Hadd hosts the Turtle Sanctuary at Ras Al Jinz, where marine turtles breed.
Interestingly, Sur is the first city in Oman to witness sunrise—a symbol of its pioneering spirit. Its long history as a shipbuilding and trading hub shapes its identity today, blending ancient traditions with modern passion.
The Life of a Sea Lover
Khamis's life is an ongoing adventure—an expression of his bond with the ocean's moods and seasons. His experiences are woven into his story —swimming with dolphins, exploring waters in shades of pink and emeralds, discovering hidden beaches untouched by time. His relationship with the sea is profound, rooted in respect, curiosity, and stewardship. Whether standing on a dhow's bow, feeling salt spray on his face, or teaching children to surf, Khamis exemplifies the modern Omani seaman—an ambassador of the ocean's wonder.
His social media features stories of bioluminescence nights, shell harvesting, and hatchings of fragile sea turtles. Each snapshot is a love letter to Oman's coastal landscapes, urging viewers to cherish and protect these environments. His advocacy extends to environmental education, inspiring local communities and visitors to see the sea as a delicate ecosystem worth preserving.
Through reels and posts, Khamis promotes marine conservation, turning admiration into action. He collaborates with fishermen, marine biologists, and volunteers—organizing beach clean-ups, removing ghost nets, and campaigning for endangered species like green and hawksbill turtles. His efforts also include removing harmful fishing gear from coral reefs and raising awareness about ocean health.
As the owner of Oman Surfers School, Khamis teaches youth the art of surfing, fostering a new generation imbued with love and stewardship for the sea. His community-building initiatives unite surfers, fishermen, and environmental volunteers working towards cleaner beaches and healthier waters.
As Oman evolves with modern development, Khamis remains anchored in the traditions of its maritime roots. He embodies the transition from ancient seafaring and trade to a vibrant community of surfers and conservationists. His love for surfing and ocean exploration signifies a future where fun and sustainability coexist, encouraging the next generation to enjoy Oman's coastline responsibly.
His love song to Sur—full of reverence—resonates through his efforts to preserve the sea. For Khamis, sea therapy isn't just personal; it's a mission to inspire community awareness of the importance of marine conservation. His journey reminds us that while seafaring traditions may change, love for the sea remains timeless and vital. You can follow his adventures on Instagram @surferoman.

Summer travel plans disrupted amid regional tensions

Muscat: As regional tensions escalate, many holidaymakers have been forced to alter or cancel their travel plans. Iran, traditionally a popular destination for both medical and leisure tourism—particularly the cooler northern regions during summer—has seen a significant shift in tourist movements. Travellers who spent the Eid holidays there are now urgently seeking alternative routes to return home, most likely by road or sea. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, reaffirmed that the Sultanate of Oman is making round-the-clock efforts to facilitate the evacuation of Omani citizens wishing to return. He stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has designated direct contact numbers in both Muscat and Tehran, organised according to citizens' geographical locations. In addition, citizens can communicate via the Ministry's official mobile app and other digital platforms. The Ministry has called on all Omani nationals currently in Shiraz and surrounding areas to gather at designated assembly points in Shiraz and Bandar Abbas. These locations have been specified to ensure the safety and orderly return of citizens to the Sultanate of Oman. Oman Air has announced cancellation of flights to Amman, Jordan.

Air services ramped for Dhofar khareef rush

Salalah – The civil aviation sector has confirmed full readiness to provide safe and smooth travel to Dhofar governorate during the 2025 khareef season, as tourist numbers are expected to rise from within and outside the sultanate. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Oman Airports, Oman Air and SalamAir are coordinating efforts to increase domestic flights and strengthen the operational efficiency of Muscat and Salalah airports. 'The goal is to ensure steady air traffic and maintain high standards of safety and service,' CAA stated. The authority said these measures reflect a unified approach to deliver a sustainable aviation system. The sector remains a key partner in supporting tourism and driving economic growth by providing modern infrastructure and reliable air services. Ahead of the season, the authority has reviewed emergency plans, confirmed the readiness of air traffic control and weather services, and reinforced coordination with all aviation partners. Oman Air will step up operations from early July, with up to 12 daily flights at peak times. SalamAir will increase services from late June through early September, reaching up to eight daily flights in July and August. SalamAir will also operate a new direct route between Suhar and Salalah from mid-July, with one daily flight. To meet the rising demand, Oman Air has added more than 70,000 seats for the season, a 16% increase compared to the last year. SalamAir has boosted capacity by over 58%, offering about 176,000 seats in total. For Omani passengers, Oman Air will maintain fixed fares between July 1 and September 15, starting at RO32 one-way and RO54 return. SalamAir fares start at RO30 one-way and RO48 return. Oman Airports said both Muscat and Salalah airports are ready to handle the expected rush. Measures have been put in place to streamline passenger services from booking to arrival, in line with global best practices. Salalah Airport will offer the 'Travel Easier' service from July 15 to September 15, allowing passengers to check in and drop off luggage between 12 and 6 hours before departure, daily from 8am to 8pm. For the first time, the airport will also introduce vehicle-based check-in, enabling passengers to complete check-in, receive boarding passes and drop off luggage without leaving their cars.

Omani Mountain Destination project moves to design phase

MUSCAT: Plans for the establishment of a landmark mountain destination in Al Jabal Al Akhdar—one of Oman's highest summits—have advanced to the design stage. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has invited qualified international consultancy firms to bid for the master planning and detailed engineering design of the estimated RO 1.2 billion mega development. Known as the Al Jabal Al Aali project, or the Omani Mountain Destination, the development is envisioned as a mixed-use residential, hospitality, and wellness district spanning an 11.8 km² site atop Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliya Governorate. Part of a prestigious portfolio of sustainable cities promoted by the Ministry, Al Jabal Al Aali will feature more than 2,500 homes, 2,000 hotel rooms, a health and wellness hub, as well as biodiversity and sports facilities. Situated at an elevation of 2,400 metres above sea level, the destination promises cooler climes and breathtaking natural surroundings—rugged mountains, deep ravines, terraced farms, and endemic juniper trees. In addition to the overall master plan, the selected consultant will be responsible for the comprehensive infrastructure design, including planning, architecture, engineering, and tender preparation and award for major infrastructure and building components. A key highlight of the development is the Western Wellness Village, an integrated health and ecotourism cluster featuring approximately 500 residential and hotel units backed by RO 200 million in investments. Spanning 630,000 m², the village will underscore the project's appeal as a premier wellness destination. Designed to harmonize with the natural terrain, the new district will include paved walkways, open squares, green spaces, and water features. Mobility solutions will be enhanced by a proposed cable car system, while an extreme sports facility will cater to thrill-seekers with options such as mountain biking, bungee jumping, and rock climbing. Upon full buildout across multiple phases, Al Jabal Al Aali is expected to host a population of around 10,000 residents. The project forms part of Oman's broader urban development vision, which aims to attract billions of Omani rials in investment over the next decade across a suite of integrated tourism and residential projects. Alongside the flagship Sultan Haitham City in Al Khoud (Muscat Governorate), the portfolio includes Al Thuraya City in Bausher, a growing array of integrated neighbourhoods under the 'Souroh' brand, and other smart, sustainable urban developments. Submissions for the Al Jabal Al Aali tender close on July 10, 2025
