Former Spain and Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina will retire from playing at the end of this season.
The 42-year-old is currently at Italian club Como, who will play the final game of their campaign when they host Inter Milan in Serie A on Friday.
Reina, who came through the Barcelona academy, was part of the Spain squad which won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
He joined Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005 and won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds as he also claimed the Premier League Golden Glove award - given to the top-flight keeper with the most clean sheets - three seasons in a row from 2005-06.
Reina made 394 appearances for Liverpool before leaving in 2014 and going on to have spells at Bayern Munich, Napoli, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio, Villarreal and Como.
He played the 1,000th competitive game of his career in 2023 when he turned out for Villarreal in 2023.
"A very beautiful career is coming to an end, a very full life," Reina told Movistar. "I feel very fortunate for what I've experienced.
"I didn't expect it, but I think the time has come and I feel like bringing it to a close here."

Inter Milan Aim Targeting Parma Duo As Part Of Backbone For New-Look Cristian Chivu Team

Inter Milan are targeting Giovanni Leoni and Ange-Yoan Bonny as part of the backbone of a new-look team under Cristian Chivu. This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. Inter Milan have officially confirmed the appointment of Cristian Chivu as their new coach. Advertisement The Nerazzurri had already decided upon the 44-year-old to replace Simone Inzaghi a few days ago. On Thursday, Inter chose Chivu, concluding a search of a couple days. This search had seen them try for Cesc Fabregas, and also reportedly consider Patrick Vieira. However, in the end, Inter went with Treble-winning former defender Chivu. They called the Romanian, and he agreed to step up. Advertisement Firstly, there is striker Ange-Yoan Bonny. The Frenchman had already been a target for Inter. And as FCIN note, Parma had in fact asked Inter for Francesco Pio Esposito as part of talks for Bonny. However, that had been while Chivu was still at the helm/ Therefore, FCIN note, Chivu will want to have a look at Pio Esposito in training before he makes any decisions on the teenage striker's future. However, the Nerazzurri are far from the only club tracking Leoni. AC Milan, Juventus, and Bournemouth have all shown an interest in the 18-year-old.

Italy beat Moldova as Spalletti bids farewell

Luciano Spalletti had been in charge since August 2023 [Getty Images] Italy claimed a 2-0 win over Moldova in Luciano Spalletti's final game as the men's national team coach. Spalletti said at a news conference on Sunday that Monday's World Cup qualifier would be his last match in charge. Advertisement The 66-year-old had been told after Friday's 3-0 loss to Norway that he would be relieved of his duties and the Azzurri ensured he bowed out with a victory. Napoli forward Giacomo Raspadori and Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso scored either side of half-time in Reggio Emilia to give Italy their first points in the group. Spalletti was appointed in August 2023 and, although Italy went into Euro 2024 as reigning champions, they were knocked out by Switzerland in the last 16. Monday's game was Spalletti's 24th as Italy coach and brought his 12th victory, giving him a win ratio of exactly 50% - the lowest of any permanent boss since Cesare Prandelli, who led the team from 2010 to 2014. Advertisement "When you're the national team coach you have no excuses, it's you who selects the squad," Spalletti told public broadcaster Rai. "It's the coach who has to make the difference and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that." Monday's game was played in a flat atmosphere and Spalletti, who coached Napoli, Inter Milan and Roma in Serie A, said tiredness was a factor behind Italy's uninspiring winning display. "I maintained this group, but I found them really fatigued at this stage of the season," he added. "Perhaps seeking someone in better physical shape might've helped, but the fact we have 25 players all a bit like this means the campaign really took it out on everyone. Advertisement "This will be a very different team in much better shape come September." Italy's next qualifiers are against Estonia and Israel on 5 and 8 September.

Liverpool Are Keeping A Keen Eye On This Bundesliga Forward: Should Slot Get Him On Board?

Liverpool Are Keeping A Keen Eye On This Bundesliga Forward: Should Slot Get Him On Board? On Sunday's edition of the Here We Go podcast, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Liverpool are keeping a keen eye on Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike. Romano said, 'There are many clubs appreciating Hugo Ekitike. It's true that Liverpool like him. Advertisement 'They [Liverpool] had some contacts to understand the situation. But at the moment the focus for Liverpool is Florian Wirtz – coming soon, Milos Kerkez – coming soon. 'They are not advancing for Ekitike but they made some calls over recent weeks to understand the situation of the player, the costs. 'So, he's a player they like, but let's see if they decided to go strong on him or another one. It also depends on the outgoings.' Ekitike's Impressive Form In German Football Ekitike had an impressive campaign in the Bundesliga after he put in a lot of productive displays as the focal point of Frankfurt's attack. The French striker registered 22 goals and picked up 12 assists in 48 matches for the German club last season across multiple competitions. Advertisement The 22-year-old deserves a ton of credit for attempting 4.0 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He kept 38.6% of his attempts on target and even distributed the ball well based on his pass completion rate of 75.5% in the German first division (stats via FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY – APRIL 17: Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt inspects the pitch prior to the UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur at Deutsche Bank Park on April 17, 2025 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. (Photo by) Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Get Ekitike On Board? Ekitike excels at finding some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to cut open the opposition defence with a killer pass in the final third and has proven himself to be a lethal finisher in the Bundesliga. The French centre-forward can also make some clever runs with the ball up top. Standing at 1.90m, he is a strong presence in the air as well. However, it remains to be seen whether the Frankfurt star can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. Advertisement Ekitike would undoubtedly add plenty of goals to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot's attack. He has what it takes to earn a regular first-team place at the Merseyside club in the coming seasons. At 22, the future looks quite promising for Ekitike. Therefore, the Reds would be wise to go all out to get him on board in this summer transfer period.
