Head coach Jardim leaves Newport by mutual consent

BBC News24-04-2025
Head coach Nelson Jardim has left Newport County by mutual consent after one season in charge of the League Two club. The 46-year-old Portuguese coach took up the role on an initial one-year deal last summer."I have known Nelson for 15 years and we have always been open and honest with each other,'' said chairman Huw Jenkins. "He felt that it was best for him and the club to move on with just two games left and our league status now secure."Jardim hinted to BBC Sport Wales last week that he was considering his future at the Exiles, with his wife and young children still living in Portugal."When we started everything, it suited me and it suited the club to have a one-year contract," Jardim said.
"The changes were for the club and for me as well, I have a young family and we need to assess everything."We didn't change the plan. That conversation has to come at the end of the season, I've always felt confident with that and since the start, I have given my life to the club, 24 hours, seven days a week."
Newport say the decision was made at a meeting with the club's chairman Jenkins after Monday's goalless draw at home to Walsall. With two games remaining Newport are 20th in League Two on 49 points, eight above the relegation zone."I can't thank Nelson enough for his hard work, commitment and loyalty, especially as he left his young family in Portugal to take on the role," added Jenkins, who completed a takeover of the club in January 2024."He took on a tough challenge with lots of changes at the club from a squad overhaul to the way we operate and work."His main goal was to keep the club in League Two during a season of transition so that we can start building for the future. It took us longer than we probably wanted, but he feels that with the job completed then it was time for him to look for a new challenge."Having taken on board his thoughts and the timing, it also allows us the space to reflect and plan over the final two games and the summer to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible."Jardim took charge of the club following the departure of Graham Coughlan in June 2024 with Jenkins promising a "new direction" for the club. The Exiles then signed 17 new players during last summer's transfer window, while Jenkins is now looking to make his second managerial appointment in the coming months."It's been a difficult season at times, but considering all the experience we have gained over the last 12 months then I believe there is a clear understanding of what we need to move us forward as a team and a club," said Jenkins."We will be looking to bring in the right manager or head coach to build on those last 12 months so we can start the season strongly; move the club forward and challenge for the top part of League Two."

Naive defending singled out as St Mirren B lose KDM Evolution Trophy opener at Dumbarton

The Buddies fielded some first-team fringe players in the 4-2 defeat to the League Two outfit. Peter Hartley admitted 'naive' defending cost St Mirren's young guns in their KDM Evolution Trophy opener on Tuesday night. ‌ But the former Motherwell centre-back, who is the club's head of first-team transition and loan pathways, insists the players will benefit from the experience. ‌ The Buddies 'B' team lost 4-2 to League Two Dumbarton at the Marbill Coaches Stadium. It was their first outing in the new-look competition which has been modelled on UEFA's European club competitions. ‌ Participating Premiership 'B' sides are allowed to field three outfield players and a goalkeeper over the age of 21. Shot-stopper Ryan Mullen, Jamaican winger Jalmaro Calvin and midfielder Fraser Taylor featured in the starting XI with hot prospect Evan Mooney also getting the nod. Both Mooney and Taylor got on the scoresheet but Stevie Farrell's Sons emerged with all three points. Harley insists the match was a good opportunity for the younger players to learn and grow as they attempt to show they have what it takes to make it to the first team. 'I think defensively we were a little naive,' he told club media afterwards. 'But that is what this competition is for; the young team come in and play men's football against a team like Dumbarton. 'To be fair, they were clinical and maybe you would get away with those chances at an Under-19s game. But they have to learn, and got to learn fast, if they are going to be integrated and develop into our first team.' ‌ Saints were 2-0 down with just over half-an-hour played after Scott Tomlinson and Chris Johnston netted past Mullen. Despite Mooney pulling one back shortly after the interval, Tony Wallace restored the Sons' advantage in the 61st minute. Taylor, who was League One player of the year last season at champions Arbroath, scored a stunning 30-yard free-kick to keep the Buddies in it. And there was almost an equaliser with eight minutes to go when Calvin showed his pace to get on the end of a pass but his effort was blocked by keeper Ollie Ecrepont. ‌ Dumbarton's Dominic Docherty then made Saints pay when he finished the match off by scoring in the closing stages. Hartley was encouraged by aspects of the performance and the resilience shown despite trailing for much of the evening. 'In the second half there were good patterns of play,' he added. 'We done well in the final third but it was that finish, the last touch, that let us down. ‌ 'But the boys were very brave, and I can't fault them for that, as they still tried to get on the ball and play. It was just defensive errors [that led to the goals].' On Calvin going the distance ahead of Saturday's Premier Sports Cup visit of Hearts, Hartley added: 'He obviously came over from Jamaica and is playing catch-up as he came in a bit later. 'For him to play 90 minutes, that will be a big plus for the manager [Stephen Robinson] as he will get to see him and Calvin showed he was fit enough to play the 90.' Next up for the young Saints is a trip to the Indodrill Stadium to face Alloa Athletic on Tuesday, August 26.

Tottenham star Joao Palhinha lays down marker to dressing room after PSG setback

Tottenham suffered penalty heartbreak in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday night in Udine following a late collapse against PSG in Thomas Frank's first competitive match in charge Joao Palhinha insists Tottenham's courageous Super Cup display proves they can achieve "something special" under Thomas Frank. The Portuguese lynchpin, recently signed from Bayern Munich on an initial loan deal, has added new steel to Spurs' midfield - even if they did blow a late two-goal lead. ‌ Palhinha remains optimistic about the challenge ahead, however, despite the agonising late collapse in Udine, stating: "We are really sad. Not just the players but all the staff and all the crowd that came to support us during the game. ‌ "It will be tough for us all to digest that loss but I think we also need to feel proud for what we did until 80 minutes because we fought all game against the top team. ‌ "I think we showed that we'll get there in the future, we have all the conditions to achieve this season and I think the future will bring us something special. We played a top game against a top opponent but in the Premier League every single game is tough and we cannot relax." Tottenham kick off their Premier League campaign on Saturday against Burnley, who Spurs relegated in May 2024 following a 2-1 victory in N17. Fellow new boy Mohammed Kudus is already relishing the chance to put things right after penalty heartbreak. The Ghanaian attacker said: "I'm very disappointed to lose the game but this is a big lesson that we must stay focused for the whole 90 minutes. "I am really, really proud of the team for their work ethic and energy because we had them for most of the game, it was just the end part we need to fix. We have a game at the weekend so now the full focus is on that. "That's the good thing about football, there is always an opportunity every week to show a different character and prove what you have got. I would have loved for us to win a trophy but it hasn't happened, so full focus on Saturday." ‌ Kudus - a £55million summer acquisition from West Ham - starred on his first official outing for Spurs, troubling PSG left-back Nuno Mendes The 25-year-old is determined to hit the ground running in north London despite the unfortunate midweek blip. He continued: 'I am very excited to have joined this beautiful club. I am still settling in, trying to adapt and get used to my new coaches but with the help of the club, so far it has been going so smoothly. I still have a lot more to show and there are a lot more games to play this season." Kudus featured as a shadow striker behind Richarlison in Italy but naturally, he tended to drift across to the right flank. Interestingly, there were no minutes for Europa League final hero Brennan Johnson amid increased competition for places. Spurs are looking to add even more firepower to their armoury in the market and discussions for Manchester City's Savinho and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze are continuing.

Ian Wright sets 'low' goal target for Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres this season

Ian Wright would be happy with a return of '10 to 15' goals from Viktor Gyokeres in his first Premier League season with Arsenal. The Gunners' long pursuit of a new centre forward came to an end this summer with the Sweden international joining from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth £64million. The former Coventry City star spent two years in the Portuguese capital where he grew into one of Europe's most feared marksmen, scoring 97 goals in 102 games – averaging a goal every 87 minutes. After a season where no Arsenal player managed to hit double figures in the league, there is real hope Gyokeres can finally solve a long-standing issue and end Arsenal's wait for a Premier League title. Mohamed Salah was last season's top scorer with 29 with Erling Haaland scooping the Golden Boot in each of the two previous seasons with hauls of 27 and 36 in 2023-24 and 2022-23 respectively. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. After hitting 39 league goals in 33 appearances in Portugal last term, Wright says he will settle for a more modest haul from Gyokeres in his first season in the English top flight. Gary Neville asked the Arsenal legend how many goals does Gyokeres have to score to be deemed a success in the Premier League in the latest episode of Stick to Football. Wright said: 'I think if he scores 10 to 15 goals in the Premier League with another five or six pitching in obviously.' Neville replied: '10? 10 is low isn't it. 10 is low, eh? Pushed again by Neville, Wright settled on 15 with fellow guests Jamie Carragher and Jill Scott stunned. More Trending Asked by Roy Keane if he would have been happy with 15 during his playing days, Wright added: 'It's a different time. 'I don't want to put him under pressure. I think if he can get 15 and go from there that would be magnificent because we have to get the other guys going as well. 'I will take 15 in the Premier League. We were 17 goals behind them (Liverpool) last season, if we can get someone to bring another 15…' Gyokeres will have the chance to open his Premier League account against his former Sporting head coach in Ruben Amorim when Manchester United host Arsenal on Sunday.
