RCB fan frenzy turns fatal: 11 dead, 75 injured
Bengaluru: What began as euphoric celebrations to mark Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden IPL title ended in tragedy Wednesday evening, when a stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left 75 others injured. The incident, one of the worst fan-related disasters in Indian cricket history, unfolded as thousands gathered to celebrate RCB's long-awaited victory. Those confirmed dead include Bhoomik (21), Sahana (19), Poornachandra (32), and Prajwal (20), Chinmayi (19), Dewanshi (13), Shravan (20), Devi (29), Shivalingaiah (17), Manoj (33), and Akshatha (age yet to be confirmed). RCB clinched their first IPL trophy on Tuesday night, ending a 17-year drought. With the mood in the city electric, the team announced a grand victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium, with Virat Kohli leading the procession, cup in hand. It was enough to send ecstatic fans running to the stadium even before the team's arrival from Ahmedabad. The situation spiralled out of control near Gate 7 of the stadium as the crowds swelled beyond manageable levels. Many collapsed due to asphyxiation in the crowd crush. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Вот что поза во сне говорит о вашем характере! Удивительные Новости Undo While 33 fans were hospitalised, 42 others were treated as outpatients. The state govt attributed the tragedy to the fan frenzy on the streets. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said: "It is deeply shocking. A moment of joy has been eclipsed by sorrow. Nearly three lakh people descended to celebrate, nobody expected so many people. We thought the stadium with a capacity of 35,000 would get filled. But no one expected such a huge turnout." The state govt announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to each of the victim's families and free treatment to the injured. Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each of the bereaved families. However, senior police officials maintained that the state govt had been warned about the the risks of holding a victory parade and celebrations at such short notice, just hours after RCB had clinched the title. Eyewitnesses and survivors criticised the lack of proper crowd control and security arrangements, calling the preparations inside and around the stadium pathetic. Though 1,500 cops were deployed, they were outnumbered by the sheer size and enthusiasm of the crowd who were waiting to rush into the stadium. With two events planned — a public felicitation one at Vidhana Soudha and a reception at the KSCA — the police force deployed had to be split between the two venues, stretching them thin. "Fans, who had no idea on how to get passes or buy tickets for the celebrations, tried to force themselves inside," police said. The govt has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the tragedy. Confusion on entry into the stadium with no clarity on which gates to use, led to the stampede-like situation, said many who were at the scene.

Bengaluru's day of shame as city failed its fans
A perfect storm of giddy, overenthusiastic fans, poor planning by officials, bad stadium management, stretched police force, shortage of time, clueless event management and lack of communication between stakeholders resulted in the tragic -- and totally avoidable -- deaths of 11 RCB fans and left nearly 100 injured. At the crack of dawn, RCB lit up social media with the big news: The champions were flying home with the coveted IPL trophy and would celebrate with a grand victory parade in Bengaluru. It was an announcement that caught the cops unawares as they had no communication about it. But it sent the already-electrified fanbase into overdrive. Then came the colossal collective failure: Police honchos failed to act swiftly and draw up crowd-control plans. Politicians turned the celebration into a photo-op frenzy, brushing aside warnings in their race to bask in reflected glory. Many brought their families to Vidhana Soudha to pose with the cricketers. "RCB gave the city a reason to celebrate. But police and politicians turned that joy into grief with their sheer incompetence. It's shameful that Bengaluru couldn't manage a 1km victory parade," said the grieving brother of one of the victims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Promoções imperdíveis de voos baratos Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Even senior bureaucrats admitted that the lives could have been saved with proper planning and coordination. "The RCB management did not consult us before announcing a victory parade, we would not have allowed it given the crazy celebrations that unfolded on the streets on Tuesday night after the victory. But the political bosses were in no mood to listen, they wanted us to go ahead with bandobust," a senior police officer said. Till mid-afternoon, there was no clarity whether there was a parade and where the events would be held. Senior cops were informed only around 2pm to be at the stadium and assembly. By which time, the crowds had already gathered. At the cricket stadium, the scenes from early afternoon held bad portents. Fans had started flocking the gates by noon and it was apparent to any bystander that things would get of control soon. TOI reporters, who could not even get in, found that most gates stayed shut and false rumours of gate numbers led to huge rush. Naturally barricades collapsed, metal grills broke down and those who fell -- mostly young people and women – found themselves unable to get up and got crushed and trampled.

'We promptly amended our...', RCB says about stampede at Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru

Chinnaswamy Stadium ahead of the IPL 2025 victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in Bengaluru on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. (Photo: IANS) Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have mourned the horrific stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday that claimed 11 lives and left 33 others injured. Thousands of RCB fans had gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to participate in a felicitation function for the RCB team that won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 title, ending the franchise's 18-year-long wait for the title. The stampede was reported outside Gate 2 of the stadium shortly after RCB players reached the Vidhana Soudha to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The crowd outside the stadium had been swelling for hours amid confusion over whether the victory parade would actually take place. Many people have criticised RCB for going ahead with a felicitation function for its players while the victims were suffering in the hospitals. But the franchise said they had amended their program soon after being made aware of the tragedy. 'RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration,' the RCB said in a statement. 'We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. 'We urge all our supporters to please stay safe,' RCB said in the statement released late in the evening. The tragic scenes outside the stadium unfolded rapidly. As barriers collapsed, panic spread among the crowd. Police personnel, unable to control the surge, watched as many fans were crushed in the chaos. Emergency teams rushed the injured to Bowring and Vydehi Hospitals. Survivors described heart-wrenching scenes—of people gasping for breath, unconscious bodies on the ground, and cries for help drowned in the commotion. RCB legend Virat Kohli also put out the same official statement, expressing his sorrow through an Instagram post.
