Tanak heading for Hyundai's first win of 2025 in Greece
With temperatures soaring in central Greece, the Estonian and co-driver Martin Jarveoja took five stage wins out of six on the rough gravel roads after starting the day only three seconds clear of team mate Adrien Fourmaux.
"Generally it was smoother and more consistent, a bit better than expected," said Tanak. "We had a good rhythm, and we maintained (it) all day."
Toyota have won all six rounds so far this season and eight-times world champion Ogier the last two.
Fourmaux's challenge faded when he hit a rock on the 10th stage and damaged his car's rear suspension, losing more than a minute, before a tyre later came off its rim.
The Frenchman dropped to third, two minutes and eight seconds behind Tanak, with Toyota's championship leader Elfyn Evans in fourth but nearly a minute further back.
Toyota's double world champion Kalle Rovanpera and Takamoto Katsuta both retired for the day after going off while Hyundai's reigning champion Thierry Neuville had a third puncture of the event and was in fifth place.
Sunday features four more stages, with bonus points to be won in the final one.

Driver given surprise audition for F1 seat as boss explains 'what happens next'
Haas and Toyota used their collaboration to stage another Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) event, this time at the Fuji Speedway in Japan where two drivers got behind the wheel The reigning champion in the Japanese Super Formula series has taken part in an "audition" test in a Formula 1 car. The test, held at Fuji Speedway in Japan this week, saw two drivers from the Asian country drive the Haas VF-23 which raced in the 2023 F1 World Championship. Such Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) sessions have been made possible by the team's partnership with Toyota, formalised last year. The Japanese carmaker, through its Gazoo Racing arm, helps Haas with technical resources and, in return, its staff get experience of the pinnacle of motorsport. And that includes opportunities for the drivers it employs in other disciplines. Ryo Hirakawa is one such driver who has benefitted from that partnership and is reserve driver for the team, having also driven free practice sessions for several outfits on the F1 grid. Hirakawa, 31, a double World Endurance Championship title-winner, was one of those two drivers who got behind the wheel in Fuji. He drove on Tuesday, in front of a crowd invited to the circuit to watch the track action. For the second of the two days of running, there was a debutant in the cockpit. Sho Tsuboi, 30, who won the Super Formula title last year and also races GT cars, got his first experience of F1 machinery. According to Masaya Kaji, Toyota Gazoo Racing's director of global motorsport, the test was not just a prize for Tsuboi's Super Formula success. "What happens next depends entirely on Tsuboi's performance and his communication with the team," he said. "This is an audition or a selection test, not just because of his experience. We want to assess his real performance. He has to work hard and communicate in English. The goal is to assess his potential. Tsuboi has great potential, but it's not just his results. The test is not a reward for becoming Super Formula champion. "These TPC tests are part of our people efforts, as we will focus on human resource development. I believe that Sho, a former Super Formula champion, will not only contribute to the development of his skills, but will also provide great motivation for the other TGR drivers. Sky Sports launches discounted Formula 1 package This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Experiencing first-hand the technologies and skills required on the world's highest stage, F1, will certainly be an important experience for their growth." Hirakawa and Tsuboi are not the first Toyota drivers to be given the chance to test modern F1 machinery in recent months. Haas also ran former F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi, who now races in the World Endurance Championship, and Formula 2 star Ritomo Miyata in the same car at other TPC outings, giving Toyota valuable data to compare Tsuboi's performance. Regardless of how well he did, it is not going to be a route onto the 2026 F1 grid. Haas already have Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman tied down to contracts for next season, though the latter remains a Ferrari junior driver and the American team might have to hastily find a replacement should the Brit be called up by the Scuderia at some point.

Meticulously restored 90s Ford Escort driven by F1 star's dad hits auction for staggering 6-figure sum
A LEGENDARY rally car that's been meticulously restored is ready to hit auction - and could sell for a mighty six-figure sum. A 1997 Ford Escort WRC, which was once driven to victory by motorsport icon Carlos Sainz Sr. and his co-driver Luis Moya, is going up for sale and expected to fetch over £350,000. 4 4 4 4 Developed under the World Rally Car regulations, this Escort, as well as its rivals of the time, had greater technical freedom compared to the series' older Group A category which limited factors like power, weight, technology and cost. In the 1997 World Rally Championship season, the Escort WRC was driven by icons such as Sainz Sr., Juha Kankkunen and Armin Schwarz. Under Sainz, the Escort claimed victories at the Acropolis Rally in Greece and the Rally of Indonesia as he finished 3rd in that year's world championship. Sainz, Kankkunen and Schwarz, as well as part-timer Jarmo Kytolehto, also scored numerous podiums throughout the year, notably at the season opening Monte Carlo Rally and the British RAC Rally. After 1997, Sainz joined the Toyota Castrol Team for 1998 and came agonisingly close to clinching his third world title. However, his hopes were dashed when his Toyota Corolla WRC broke down on the final stage of the final rally, leaving him to settle for the runner-up spot. Sainz is perhaps best known today as the father of Formula 1 star Carlos Sainz Jr, who currently drives for the Williams F1 team - having also represented the likes of McLaren and Ferrari. Iconic Auctioneers, the auction house handling the sale of this 1990s machine, will put the Escort WRC under the hammer as part of the upcoming Silverstone Festival's 'Competition Cars' section. According to their listing, the car underwent a full engine rebuild in 2020 using correct-specification parts and has had minimal mileage since. Brilliantly, it retains its original 1997 season livery - the orange and white of gas and oil company Repsol - preserving its authentic rally heritage. With its rich history and association with some of the sport's greatest names, the Escort is a rare - and pricey - collector's item for rally enthusiasts. Even out of rally spec, the Ford Escort of the 1990s has become hugely sought after. Indeed, back in June, a 32-year-old Escort sold for a massive £105,750 - over five times its original price. The red 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth only had one owner who had done just 12,530 miles in it and was described as in exceptional 'time warp' condition throughout, as reported by Luxury Auto News. Ahead of the sale, the listing said: "Motorsport devotee John Phillips acquired the Escort as an early retirement present to himself and it was undoubtedly his 'pride and joy'. "It lived in its own garage from the day he bought it, never came out on wet days and was diligently maintained as and when required until his untimely passing in 2009 from which point the Escort remained interred in the same garage until recently removed. "The history file is comprehensive and includes the original grey leather document wallet, the full complement of books and manuals. "Its original tax disc holder, documentation relating to the 'Options' purchase scheme and the dealer handover sheet, plus of course various invoices, MoT Certificates and later tax discs. "In readiness for sale, the cambelt and tensioner has been renewed and an oil and filter change carried out. "However with minimal use over the last 15 or so years, we recommend that minor recommissioning may be required to ensure that everything is exactly as it should be.
