Authorities issue warning against illegal animal slaughter

Authorities in Abu Dhabi are urging residents to use licensed abattoirs during the Eid Al Adha holidays and reduce health risks linked to contaminated meat. The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) highlighted that licensed abattoirs follow strict hygiene and safety standards, allowing only trained butchers to carry out slaughter following Islamic practices. This includes proper animal handling, prayer recitation and accurate cutting — critical for both religious observance and meat quality. They also follow proper waste management and safely dispose meat that's unsafe.

Abu Dhabi calls for hygienic slaughtering practices ahead of Eid Al Adha

As Eid Al Adha approaches, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) is intensifying efforts to raise public awareness about the importance of slaughtering livestock in licensed abattoirs. The campaign aims to reduce the risks of unregulated slaughter and discourage the use of unlicensed butchers. This supports both public health and biosecurity, helping to prevent diseases that can spread between animals and people. ADAFSA highlights that using licensed abattoirs is essential for maintaining food safety. These facilities provide a clean, controlled environment that limits contamination and ensures meat is handled according to strict hygiene standards. All animals are inspected by veterinarians both before and after slaughter to make sure the meat is safe to eat. If an animal is found to be sick or unfit for consumption, the meat is completely rejected and safely disposed of to protect consumers. Trained, licensed butchers carry out the slaughter process, and proper waste disposal methods are followed to meet biosecurity requirements. ADAFSA also ensures that Islamic slaughtering guidelines are strictly followed. This includes correct animal handling, reciting the prayer, using precise cutting techniques for effective bleeding, and making sure the animal is fully bled. Improper cutting or illness in the animal can result in poor bleeding, which affects both meat safety and quality. Through this campaign, ADAFSA encourages the public to use Abu Dhabi's modern abattoirs, which follow the highest standards of safety, hygiene, and religious practices. These efforts ensure that the meat consumed during Eid Al Adha is safe, clean, and prepared in a way that protects both public health and religious values.
