AFL coach bakes ‘nuffy' journo as St Kilda crisis addressed
Ross Lyon has hit out at reports of unrest at St Kilda as the club's dressing room dramas took another turn on Tuesday night.
The Saints coach singled out a report from Adelaide-based veteran journalist Michelangelo Rucci, who had earlier set the rumour mill ablaze surrounding the future of several senior players at the club.
Rucci reported on SEN SA that star defender Cal Wilkie, captain Jack Steele, midfielder Marcus Windhager and ruckman Rowan Marshall could be part of a mass exodus at the end of the 2025 season.
That was quickly followed by the bombshell suggestion from Essendon legend Tim Watson that the Saints were preparing a $25 million offer to bring West Coast star Harley Reid to the club on a 12-year-deal.

With the Saints already breaking the bank to bring Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning to the club on a rich deal previously reported to have been worth up to $1.7 million per-season and with superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera set to offered a monster deal worth around $1.4 million, there does not appear to be much left in the kitty.
GWS 22-gamer Leek Aleer is also reportedly set to move to the Moorabbin-based club.
Fox Footy on Tuesday night added details to the dramas at St Kilda with leading journalist Jon Ralph reporting there are fears Steele will be part of the 'collateral damage' of the club's list management moves.
Speaking on Fox Footy's mid-week tackle, Ralph said: 'It's not a player exodus just yet, but it's a state of affairs that certainly impacts the club's captain in Jack Steele, and it's vice-captain Cal Wilkie.

Ross Lyon appeared on Footy Classified.
'There's multiple players on the brink of considering leaving a club that needs to bring in talent, not lose it.
'Senior players are worried that Jack Steele will be part of the collateral damage. This is a club that is making massive offers to the likes of Tom De Koning, Leek Aleer and Harley Reid. They just need to clear cap space.'
He said he does not expect Wilkie to leave at the end of the season, but said there has been some bewilderment from Wilkie's camp when it learned of the money the club is preparing to throw elsewhere.
With all that swirling in the background, Lyon said on Channel 9's Footy Classified that Rucci's report about Wilkie was 'half-baked'.

Ralph on fears of St Kilda player exodus
more becoming... more increasingly agitated with the situation ahead of the trade period.
AFL: Jon Ralph gives an update on the situation at St. Kilda Saints where senior players are... ... more
'6.30 tonight (Tuesday), in my car, in my driveway, (Wilkie said): 'Ross I've never entertained going anywhere else, I love St Kilda, I love what we're doing',' Lyon said.
'There's a lot of half-baked stories, that's what I see.
'I heard the (Michaelangelo) Rucci stuff, I listened to it. I thought it was two old blokes having a beer and a barbecue in the backyard.
'There was no substance, no rigour, I said 'Ruc, you send me postcards from Italy herding the sheep and counting the sheep.
'To be honest, you're a Port Adelaide nuffy, let's move on.
'Does he write content for the Port Adelaide SANFL club, is he a mad Port Adelaide, are they trying to get us into a bit of turmoil?

'It's all part of the theatre, it's all part of feeding the chooks.
'I hear the noise about contracted players... I would think contracted players are at your club unless you decide otherwise.'
Lyon also addressed reports about the club's interest in Harley Reid, curiously suggesting West Coast officials are frustrated by Reid's ongoing contract saga — and the club's failure to lock the young star down.
'I do love Tim, but he got this one wrong,' Lyon said.
'You just voiced, Don Pyke the (West Coast) CEO, who we love and respect, is frustrated at their end for whatever reason for Harley and negotiations.
'Clearly they think there is something in the ether that is getting in their way. Well it certainly isn't me.'
Lyon said he has never spoken to Reid personally.
However, he did not address the possibility of Reid speaking to other figures at the Saints.

Brisbane Broncos star defects from Australia
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Payne Haas has sensationally defected from Australia. The Broncos prop has made a call to knock back his chance to ever wear a Kangaroos jersey again, instead making a decision to play for Samoa at international level. As first reported by Code Sports, Haas has privately informed a number of Samoan players he will be playing with them during this year's Pacific Championships. It is a hammer blow to the Kangaroos jersey and for new coach Kevin Walters just weeks after his appointment was confirmed. Payne Haas. Photo by. Haas' decision to play for Samoa is yet another hammer blow to the Green and Gold jersey with a number of other superstar players electing not to represent their country. The NSW State of Origin forward has been processing his decision for a number of months. Keeping Haas in the Green and Gold was widely seen as Walters' first priority after taking the job. His next job will be to stop Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui from switching to Samoa at international level. Haas' NSW teammates Jarome Luai, Brian To'o and Steve Crichton already represent Samoa, and they will be hopeful more players will join them ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Walters' Kangaroos begin their Tour of the UK on October 25. Walters is only contracted until the end of the year. The former Queensland coach said last month he intended to sit down with Haas. Payne Haas at broncos training at Red Hill . Pic Annette Dew 'In time I will but that's probably not a conversation for today,' Walters said. 'I just want to explain to those players that are contemplating (defecting), I totally understand their situation but let's get the Kangaroos opportunity in front of them and see where they're at with that. 'We'll move forward from there. One thing about the Australian rugby league team is that there's great talent. We know that. 'If some players elect to play for Pasifika nations or whatever nation, we've got plenty of depth here in Australia.' He said he would respect players if they choose not to play for Australia. Rugby league icon and former Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said last month Walters should not feel compelled to chase any players that did not want to play for Australia. 'They (Haas, Fa'asuamaleaui and Tabuai-Fidow) are all great players but there are other players who are just as good,' Meninga said on SEN radio in Queensland. 'We've just got to see what their view is first because if you understand their view, then you understand what you need to do to move forward. 'All those traditions that Pacific Island teams have is alluring to players, so we've got to provide a similar type of environment around what is an Aussie and who do we represent and what do we celebrate.' Eagles bullish AFL's $2 million man will stay
West Coast coach Andrew McQualter is optimistic Harley Reid will stay at the club for the long term despite more Godfather-type offers rolling in for the star midfielder. Reid is contracted to West Coast until the end of 2026 but there is already a huge tug-of-war for the No.1 draft pick. St Kilda were the latest club to throw their hat into the ring, with the Saints reportedly contemplating an offer in the vicinity of $25 million over 12 years. The Eagles offer is rumoured to be about $24 million over 11 years - composing of an initial two-year deal with a trigger for the remaining nine. Hawthorn, Essendon and Geelong are others to have shown interest in Reid, with Melbourne-based clubs hoping the pull-home factor will convince the Victorian to leave West Coast. Reid's management say the 20-year-old is happy in Perth, and the Eagles are hopeful of being able to re-sign the midfield bull. "I'm really confident Harley will be here," McQualter said on Thursday. "Every day Harley turns up to work, he's incredibly invested in this team, this club. So yeah, I'm really optimistic that Harley will be here." When asked to clarify whether his optimism around Reid was merely for next year or for the long term, McQualter replied: "I'm talking for a long time." "The young man is really invested," McQualter added. "He's working hard to make us become better, to get himself better. "He cares about the group, cares about the club. So there's signs that point to me that he's really invested." Questions have been raised about whether it's in the best interests of a club to commit more than $2 million a season on one player. McQualter doesn't see any issues with it. "Money's different to what it used to be," the former Saints and Suns tagger said. "When I played, I got paid $48,000. So if you're asking me would I have taken $2 million - the answer is yes, I would have. "Was I worth it? No, I think that's pretty obvious. "But I think that's just where the game's trending. It's going up. It'll happen eventually - someone will be that player. "There was a time when no one was a million dollar player, and that broke a record. So that'll just be what happens, and it will keep moving like that in the future." McQualter was less bullish when it came to co-captain Oscar Allen, who as a restricted free agent is expected to sign with the Brisbane Lions. "We're working with Oscar's management. We're still not clear where it'll be, but we're working really hard to try and make Oscar a player here for a long time," McQualter said. The Eagles showed enormous fight in last week's nine-point loss to Adelaide, and they'll face another big task on Sunday against a star-studded Western Bulldogs attack featuring Sam Darcy and Aaron Naughton at Marvel Stadium.
