Kuwait Club withdraws bid to host Arab Clubs Handball Championship

Arab Times01-07-2025
KUWAIT CITY, July 1: Kuwait Sports Club has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 40th edition of the Arab Clubs Championship (League and Cup Champions League), which closed for applications the day before yesterday. The only two bids submitted were from the Kuwait Club and the Tunisian Handball Federation. With Kuwait's withdrawal, the Executive Office of the Arab Handball Federation is expected to announce Tunisia as the host either tomorrow or early next week. The tournament is scheduled to take place on September 12.
The withdrawal comes due to a scheduling conflict with the AFC Futsal Championship qualifiers, set for September 20–24, which will occupy the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex, making it unavailable for hosting the handball tournament.
Kuwait Club had previously organized and won the 39th edition of the Arab Clubs Championship in September 2024, defeating Al-Salmiya in the final. This marked its second consecutive title, having also claimed the 38th edition by overcoming Egypt's Zamalek in the final hosted in Qatif, Saudi Arabia.
The most successful club in the Arab Clubs Championship is Espérance Sportive de Tunis with seven titles, followed by Al Ahly (Egypt) with five, and both Étoile du Sahel (Tunisia) and Mouloudia Club (Algeria) with three each. Several clubs—including Al Ahly (Bahrain), Al Noor and Al Khaleej (Saudi Arabia), Club Africain (Tunisia), Naft d'Oran (Algeria), and Kuwait Club—have each won the title twice. Other former champions include Al Ain (UAE), Al Tasweeq (Algeria), Sporting and Zamalek (Egypt), Al Rayyan and Al Gharafa (Qatar), and Sakiet Ezzit (Tunisia).
Head of Kuwait Club's handball department, Haitham Al-Rashidi, congratulated the club's board and fans on securing the local double title this season.
'After a long and demanding season—from August 10, 2024, to June 28, 2025—we achieved significant milestones,' he said. 'We won the Arab Championship in Kuwait, followed by the local cup, then went on to compete in the Asian and Gulf Cups, and claimed the Super Cup as well.'
Al-Rashidi emphasized the club's high standards: 'Kuwait Club always plays to win, both locally and internationally. Anything short of first place is a failure in our eyes.'
Looking ahead, Al-Rashidi stated that the team is currently in a rest period, with preseason training camps scheduled from August 10 to 16 in Bosnia, as part of preparations for the upcoming season. The club will participate in the Arab League, the local league, as well as the Gulf and Asian Championships. He stressed that under the leadership of club president Khaled Al-Ghanim, the goal remains to prepare the team at the highest level for continued success.

Al-Qadsiya suffers a narrow loss to Al-Akhdood

ISTANBUL, Aug 10: Al-Qadsiya suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia's Al-Akhdood during its training camp in Turkey as it prepares for the new season. Al-Qadsiya will play two more friendlies in the coming days — against Al-Faisaly of Saudi Arabia tomorrow and Al-Emarat of the UAE on August 19. Additionally, two more matches are being arranged before the camp concludes on August 29. Tunisian coach Nabil Maaloul aimed to rotate the squad extensively in the match. The first half featured a starting lineup of Ali Jarrah, Mohammed Al-Sharifi, Khaled Ibrahim, Ahmed Al-Yahya, Rashid Al-Dosari, Al-Mahdi Berhama, Jassim Al-Matar, Abdulrahman Al-Dhafiri, Eid Al-Rashidi, Mohammed Soula, and Ismail Khafi. In the second half, Maaloul made several substitutions, bringing on Abdulaziz Abdeen, Moaz Al-Dhafiri, Khaled Sabah, Sufyan Bouchar, Faisal Al-Shatti, Abdullah Mutawa, Talal Al-Fadel, Adhbi Shehab, Bader Al-Mutawa, Ahmed Boudi, and Abdullah Al-Awadhi. Mohammed Al-Omran later replaced Mutawa. The match featured several young players, including Al-Omran, Boudi, Al-Awadhi, Al-Sharifi, and newcomer Al-Yahya. Goalkeeper Abdeen stood out with multiple key saves, preventing several dangerous attempts. The game was intense and physical, leading to multiple stoppages by the UAE referees due to on-field altercations between the teams. From a physical and tactical perspective, Al-Qadsiya benefited from the test against a well-prepared Al-Akhdood side, which ended its own training camp with this fixture. The first half finished 0-0, but Al-Akhdoud scored midway through the second half. In the final moments, Bader Al-Mutawa missed a penalty kick that could have equalized. Coach Maaloul used the match to evaluate player readiness and try out tactical ideas from recent training sessions, planning to give more players opportunities in the upcoming games. Meanwhile, Al-Arabi will hold its final training session this evening in Male, Maldives, ahead of tomorrow's AFC Challenge League play-off match against Maziya Sports. The Green Falcons arrived in the Maldives last Friday after concluding a training camp in Abu Dhabi, UAE, where they played three friendlies — all losses against Al Wahda (0-2), Bani Yas (0-1), and Hatta (1-2).

New signings ready to shine as Al-Salmiya faces Al-Jazeera

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 10: Al-Salmiya will open its friendly matches tonight against Al-Jazeera at 7:30 pm at Jaber Al-Mubarak Stadium, home of Al-Sulaibikhat Club. The Yellow Knights are gearing up for their Zain Premier League campaign, starting with a first-round clash against Kazma on September 12. Meanwhile, newcomer Al-Jazeera, competing in the Zain First Division League for the first time, aims to begin its season on September 14 under the guidance of Ibrahim Obaid. Tonight's friendly will be Al-Salmiya's only local warm-up match before heading to Turkey next Thursday for a training camp lasting until August 30. During the camp, the team will play three additional friendlies to prepare for the league kickoff. Coach Nasser Al-Shatti hopes to evaluate as many players as possible in today's match and ensure the squad's readiness. He also plans to give game time to new signings Syrian Mahmoud Al-Aswad and Jordanian Hussam Abu Al-Dhahab, alongside local additions Saud Qasim, Abdulrahman Salem, Abdullah Al-Shamali, Fawaz Al-Dosari, Omar Ali, Badr Jalal, and Nasser Salem.
