Crime Stoppers offering reward after burglary, vandalism on Niagara Falls school property
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Crime Stoppers WNY announced it's offering up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest or indictment of people allegedly responsible for several criminal mischief incidents and a burglary that took place on Niagara Falls High School property.
The reported incidents, which caused an estimated total of $15,000 in damage, occurred on March 29, April 1, 9, 10 and 15, Crime Stoppers said, and resulted in smashed windows, paint thrown on buildings and vehicles, and illegal entry into the field house.
Anyone with information regarding the incidents is asked to contact Crime Stoppers WNY at (716) 867-6161 or submit a tip through its mobile app, 'Buffalo Tips.'

Man on Puerto Rico's most-wanted list arrested in Lancaster
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man listed as one of the most-wanted people in Puerto Rico was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Lancaster on Thursday, a representative with U.S. Customs and Border Protection told WIVB News 4. Raymundo Rondon-Canales, 54, a U.S. citizen from Puerto Rico, was listed on the most-wanted list for sexual assault of a minor, failure to register as a sex offender, and for violating a court order from Guayama Court, Customs and Border Protection said. A $2,500 award was offered for information about him in February of last year. 'This arrest underscores our unwavering commitment to border security and apprehending dangerous fugitives,' said Patrol Agent Martin Coombs. Rondon-Canales allegedly presented a counterfeit lawful permanent resident card during a traffic stop impersonating a Colombian National. He also gave a false name to police, officials said. An investigation revealed his true identity, as well as his status as a wanted man. Officials said he had absconded from Puerto Rico and posed 'a significant threat to public safety.' Empire Challenge helps agencies practice collaboration
LEWISTON, N.Y. (WIVB) — Local, state, and federal agencies are conducting emergency response exercises on the Niagara River and Lake Ontario on June 5 and 6 during the 'Empire Challenge.' The New York Naval Militia does these exercises typically once or twice a year in the Hudson River or at Seneca Lake — however, this time, they chose to use the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. 'Here you'll have several knots of water moving, you have the turbulence upriver where the power system is. So operating in that area is much more difficult. So it's the environmental piece, but also it's the border piece,' said Jay Dutcher, the operations officer of the New York Naval Militia. 'Illegal narcotics is a huge issue, so we're here with the Border Patrol as well and to integrate with them and to learn what their role is.' 'Along the international border, there's always smuggling occurring. It's people, it's narcotics, it's weapons, these things happen. Luckily for us in Niagara County, it is not an everyday occurrence; it's not something that's happening constantly, but the threat is always there,' said Brady Waikel, patrol agent in charge of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. 'We have to remain vigilant, we have to remain prepared to counter those when they happen.' Agencies participated in training scenarios of water rescues, diving exercises, stopping smuggling of narcotics, testing communication platforms, and more. This year, the Swedish Armed Forces were also involved. 'They're very concerned of the threat of the East from them, from frankly Russia, so they're concerned of that. So they're trying to integrate more closely with the U.S. and they are partnered with New York State in a program called the state partnership program that's run through the National Guard Bureau,' said Dutcher. 'In times like this, it's important to see forward and not lose time because together we are strong,' said Patrik Mattsson, chief of staff of a Swedish Marine Regiment. 'When I come here, I see actually the seamless working between different levels — the state, the federal as well as between the fire department, police department and the army and the naval militia, and that's a (takeaway) for me to bring home.' Though the exercises were all simulations, the practices help build the collaboration between all the agencies in case an emergency occurs. 'Honestly, it makes me feel really good to know the preparedness that we have here in the event that something does happen,' said Jonathan Schultz, fire coordinator and director of emergency services for Niagara County. 2 teens charged for allegedly stealing nun's car in Amherst
AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two teens are facing charges for allegedly shoving a nun to the ground and stealing her car. Police said the alleged carjacking happened as the nun was arriving for school in Amherst. The incident happened just before 9 a.m. on April 10 at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart on Main Street, where the nun teaches. According to police, the teens approached her, asked for help and then grabbed her keys, shoved her and stole the vehicle. Police said the two teens have since been charged with robbery and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. WIVB News 4 obtained the letter sent to parents after the incident happened. The letter informs parents that 'the teacher received minor injuries from being pushed out of the way.' The letter also tells parents that the school will be reviewing security measures 'to see if anything further is needed to support student and faculty safety.' Car thefts involving teens has risen in recent years both locally and across the nation. Erie County District Attorney Michael Keane is warning teens of how dangerous the trend is. 'These kids are putting themselves in danger. They really are. If you're being chased by the police, or even just the owner of the vehicle,' he said. 'We see cases involving very serious injuries and death because someone thought it would be fun to steal a car and they should be mindful of that because it happens so quickly. Next thing you know is, people's lives are destroyed.' The two teens are being tried in family court because of their ages.
