This Muslim country in Africa has banned animal sacrifice on Eid al-Adha. Here's why
Eid al-Adha, one of the two sacred days for Muslims worldwide, is also known as 'sacrifice' Eid as animal sacrifice is one of the most important ritual in this festival.
But Muslims in north African nation, Morocco will abstain from the animal sacrifice ritual due to a royal directive amid the deepening economic hardship and an agricultural crisis.
In February, King Mohammed VI has urged his fellow Moroccans not to slaughter sheep for Eid al-Adha as the country grapples with dwindling herds due to a six-year drought, according to a report in the Guardian.
On 26 February, the Morocco's minister of Islamic affairs, Ahmed Toufiq read a letter on the monarch's behalf on the state-run Al Aoula TV channel. The letter cited economic hardship and the climate crisis as reasons for the rising prices of livestock and sheep shortage in the north African country.
'Performing it in these difficult circumstances will cause real harm to large segments of our people, especially those with limited income,' the king, who is also Morocco's highest religious authority, wrote in the letter, as per the Guardian report.
To uphold the religious significance of sacrifice, Mohammed VI announced that he would perform the sacrifice on behalf of all Moroccans on Eid al-Adha.
Morocco is a Muslim majority country with Islam as the most widely practiced religion , with over 99 per cent of the population identifying as Muslims. The Moroccan constitution recognise Islam as the state religion
Muslims in Morocco will mark Eid a-Adha on Saturday, 7 June. This is a day later than in many other countries including Saudi Arabia where it was celebrated on Friday, 6 June. Muslims in India will also celebrate Eid al-Adha on Saturday, 7 June.
Ahead of Eid on 7 June, Moroccan authorities have launched a nationwide campaign to close down livestock markets, preventing the sale of sacrificial animals, media reports said.
Eid al-Adha, is an annual 'feast of sacrifice' in which Muslims slaughter livestock to honour the incident mentioned in Quran about prophet Ibrahim willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. While Ibrahim was about to follow the divine order (in his dream), God intervened and replaced the child with a sheep.
In many parts of north Africa, including Morocco, an enduring drought has intensified inflation in recent years. After seven years of dry weather, Morocco's sheep herds have reduced by 38 percent, which has drastically increased the price of sheep.
Last year, prices reached around $600 ( ₹ 51,426). The price of the preferred domestic sheep can often exceed monthly household earnings in Morocco, where the monthly minimum wage is $324 ( ₹ 27,833).
Prices have become so exorbitant that 55 per cent of families surveyed by the Moroccan Center for Citizenship, a non-profit, last year said they struggled to cover the costs of buying sheep.
Performing it in these difficult circumstances will cause real harm to large segments of our people, especially those with limited income.
Morocco has one of the highest red meat consumption rates in Africa and has lost a third of its national cattle and sheep population since 2016. In its 2025 budget, Morocco suspended import duties and a value-added tax on cattle and sheep to help stabilise domestic prices.

MIM slams NCERT changes, role of RSS
1 2 Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the BJP govt at the Centre should include the book 'Muslims Against Partition' by Shamsul Islam in the NCERT-recommended syllabi. "This lie about partition is repeated time and again. At that time, not even 2–3% of Muslims had the right to vote. Only elitists such as zamindars and jagirdars were enfranchised. Even today, they (RSS and BJP) blame us (Muslims) for the partition of the country. How were we responsible for that? Those who fled, fled. Those who were loyal, stayed," he said. Responding to media queries regarding proposed changes to the NCERT syllabus concerning the partition of the country, he stated that the RSS was never part of India's freedom struggle and did not participate in the Quit India Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, or other agitations. "Why don't they include in the NCERT syllabus that the RSS hated freedom fighters more than the British did? The RSS always sided with the British. Let them teach students all of this as well. No, they only want to spread hatred against Muslims," Owaisi alleged. He claimed the RSS never participated in the independence movement. "The RSS's Hindutva ideology has always been contrary to the Constitution. It was wrong for the PM to praise an organisation that spreads hatred in the country," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). India's partition happened due to ‘jugalbandi' of Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League: Congress
The Congress said that as a special NCERT module to mark the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' held Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Congress and the then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for India's partition. The Congress also dubbed the RSS as 'the biggest villain' in the country's history, and said that the coming generations would not forgive them. New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday alleged that the partition of India happened because of the 'jugalbandi' of the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League, as it accused the ruling BJP of interfering in institutions while trying to distort the country's history. Congress spokesperson and head of party's media and publicity department Pawan Khera said the book does not mention anything about the Hindu Mahasabha for forming coalition governments with the Muslim League and both propagating, in pre-partition days, that Hindus and Muslims cannot live together in one country. 'The partition happened because of the Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League's 'jugalbandi'. If there is anyone which is the biggest villain in history, it is the RSS. Generations will not forgive them for the contribution,' Khera told reporters when asked about the NCERT book. 'The manner in which they are trying to interfere in institutions and are trying to distort the history, we would not sit quiet. Can they remove these pages of 1938, 1940 and of 1942?' he asked. The Congress leader said L K Advani had gone to the Mazar of Mohammad Ali Jinnah to pay his respects, as the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League were 'together in seeking partition'. Khera claimed that in 1938, the Hindu Mahasabha held its annual convention on the banks of Sabarmati in Gujarat, where it was clearly stated that Hindus and Muslims cannot stay together in one country. In 1940, he said, in its Lahore convention, the Muslim League took this forward and repeated this statement, but the NCERT module does not mention about them. 'When the Quit India Movement was launched in 1942, Congress leaders resigned from the provincial Assembly and took to the streets. At that time, the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League entered into a coalition and jointly formed governments in NWFP, Bengal and Sindh. 'Has the NCERT module written this that the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League formed joint coalition governments?' the Congress leader asked. 'Put that book in fire if all that which is history has been not been written in it,' Khera asserted. The NCERT module has also noted that post-Partition, Kashmir emerged as a new problem, which had never existed in India before and created a challenge for the country's foreign policy. It also flagged that some countries keep giving aid to Pakistan and exert pressure on India in the name of the Kashmir issue. 'India's Partition happened due to wrong ideas. The party of Indian Muslims, the Muslim League, held a conference in Lahore in 1940. Its leader, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, said that Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religious philosophies, social customs, and literatures,' the module said. In a section titled 'Culprits of Partition', the NCERT module said, 'Ultimately, on August 15, 1947, India was divided. But this was not the doing of any one person. There were three elements responsible for the Partition of India: Jinnah, who demanded it; second, the Congress, which accepted it; and third, Mountbatten, who implemented it. But Mountbatten proved to be guilty of a major blunder. 'He preponed the date for the transfer of power from June 1948 to August 1947. He persuaded everyone to agree to this. Because of this, complete preparations could not be made before the Partition. The demarcation of the Partition boundaries was also done hastily. For that, Sir Cyril Radcliffe was given only five weeks.' PTI SKC MNK MNK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

NCERT module blames Congress for Partition; party says Hindu Mahasabha first suggested the idea
The Opposition Congress alleged here on Saturday (August 16, 2025) that the 'Culprits of Partition', a segment in the course module designed by the NCERT for Classes 6 to 8, is a distortion of history. The module blamed the Congress and then All India Muslim League leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah for the Partition. The module is a supplementary resource for Classes 6 to 8 (middle stage) – not part of regular textbooks – and is meant to be used for projects, posters, discussions and debates The NCERT module said: 'Ultimately, on August 15, 1947, India was divided. But this was not the doing of any one person. There were three elements responsible for the Partition of India: Jinnah, who demanded it; second, the Congress, which accepted it; and third, Mountbatten [then Viceroy], who implemented it.' Asked about the NCERT module blaming the trio, Congress leader Pawan Khera said the book can be torn up if it didn't mention the role of the Hindu Mahasabha. 'In 1938, the Hindu Mahasabha at their national convention on the banks of Sabarmati in Gujarat first proposed that the Hindus and Muslims stay separately. This was endorsed by the Lahore session of the Muslim League in 1940. Then, in 1942, the coalition government in Sindh province, formed by the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League, adopted a resolution,' Mr. Khera said at a press conference. 'If these dates are not mentioned in the NCERT book, it should be torn up,' he added. Senior Congress leader and MP Manish Tewari said on social media that the two-nation theory that finally led to the Partition of India pre-dates Partition by at least seven decades, if not more. 'It had proponents on both sides - Muslims and Hindus,' he said, providing quotes over those seven decades from various people such as V.D. Savarkar, Syed Ahmed Khan, Bhai Parmanand and Lala Lajpat Rai. 'In any case, the Partition was not the partition of India but of two of its provinces – Punjab and Bengal. The NCERT chapter on Partition Horror's is a case of distorting history,' Mr. Tewari said, adding that in the North West Frontier Province, the Hindu Mahasabha members joined hands with Sardar Aurang Zeb Khan of the Muslim League to form a government in 1943. 'The Mahasabha member of the Cabinet was Finance Minister Mehar Chand Khanna,' he said. The module released to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' said the Partition happened due to wrong ideas. 'The party of Indian Muslims, the Muslim League, held a conference in Lahore in 1940. Its leader, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, said that Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religious philosophies, social customs, and literatures,' the module said. (With PTI inputs)
