Clyde goal hero hails 'whirlwind' win over Peterhead as he eyes Morton clash

Daily Record23-07-2025
Craig Howie scored to spark an unlikely comeback win at Peterhead
Craig Howie says Clyde snatched a 'cheeky' win at Peterhead in a crazy end to their Premier Sports Cup clash on Saturday.

The hosts led 1-0 through an 82nd-minute Kieran Shanks penalty four minutes into stoppage time, but Howie and debutant Mouhamed Niang netted within one minute and 43 seconds of each other to take the points back home.

That left the Bully Wee on four points going into a clash at home to Stenhousemuir on Tuesday, where they drew 2-2 and won 4-3 on penalties.

That leaves Clyde on six points with their last Group G fixture at Morton on Saturday. With Motherwell having won the group, the best they can hope for is a best runners-up slot if they can beat Dougie Imrie's side.
Rutherglen man Howie said: 'It was a bit of a whirlwind finish. There really wasn't much in the game and we were quite disappointed to be 1-0 down quite late on.
'I didn't actually realise how late the two goals were, but we knew we had to throw everything at it.

'We put a longer ball into the box, and luckily I was just able to get my head on it, direct it on target, and I'm not really sure how it made its way in, but it ended up in the bottom corner.
'Then literally straight from kick-off we went up and did the exact same thing again, bundled a goal in and snatched a victory that really wasn't looking likely at one point.

'It was the 94th and 96th minute, which is a bit crazy. I don't think I've ever been involved in a game where we scored two so late on, but I would say on the balance of play that we deserved at least a draw.
'A victory might have been a bit cheeky, but we'll take it!'
Howie, 29, knows Clyde are up against it to be part of the last-16, and said: 'It's a great result and it's a really difficult cup to progress in, especially when you're looked at as one of the lower teams in the group, being in League Two.
'It would be huge for the club to potentially progress in this cup. It's probably not expected of any of the League Two teams to get through, because it's only one team that goes through, and then a small number of second-placed teams.
'For any League Two clubs to progress would be really good, and it would be really good for Clyde, so there will be a big push from all the boys there to get it over the line.'

Rangers vs Dundee injury news: 5 out as key trio emerge as serious doubts for Ibrox clash

Rangers will aim to pick up their first three points of the season as the entertain Dundee in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox on Saturday (kick-off: 5.45pm). Russell Martin's side had a disappointing start to their league campaign at Motherwell last weekend, with James Tavernier's early opener cancelled out by an angled drive by Emmanuel Longelo in the closing stages of the game at Fir Park. However, their comfortable 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday has injected some much-needed positivity back into the squad. As for their visitors Dundee, it has been a difficult start to the campaign for Steven Pressley's side. Losing 2-1 at home to Hibs on opening day last week, the Dens Park outfit also struggled in the Premier Sports Cup, losing to both Alloa Atheltic and Airdrieonians as they crashed out of the competition at the group stages. Both sides will be desperate for the three points, but a number of injury issues has left three key players sweating on their inclusion at Ibrox this weekend. Ahead of the game at Ibrox, The Scotsman has all the latest team news: 1 . Cesar Garza - Dundee - OUT Took a stray boot to the head from Hibs' Jack Iredale last weekend. He completed the game, but has now been ruled out of the trip to Rangers with the injury. | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . Mikey Moore - Rangers - DEBUT Could make his debut at Ibrox after joining from Tottenham Hotspur on loan last week. | SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . Rabbi Matondo - Rangers - OUT The Welsh winger is currently out with injury and won't be available for the visit of Dundee. Unlikely to have been part of the matchday squad anyway. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . Charlie Reilly - Dundee - OUT Has a broken shoulder and will be out for a number of weeks, unfortunately for Dundee. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales Related topics: Scottish Premiership

Rangers vs Dundee: Martin's men hope to build on strong Plzen display as Dark Blues seek first win

The Light Blues started out with a 1-1 draw to Motherwell while Dundee lost 2-1 against Hibs. BATTLE OF THE BLUES Rangers vs Dundee: Martin's men hope to build on strong Plzen display as Dark Blues seek first win – latest team news RANGERS boss Russell Martin got the response he was looking for in their Champions League qualifier with Viktoria Plzen. Now he'll be hoping to build on that 3-0 win with victory against a depleted Dundee side at Ibrox on Saturday. Martin accused some of "self-preservation" and needing to "drop their egos" in an astonishing blast after the game at Fir Park. There were questions around whom in the dressing room those comments were aimed at. By Tuesday evening it became clear. Advertisement He made big calls against Plzen as captain James Tavernier and arguably Rangers best player last season Nico Raskin dropped to the bench along with Kieran Dowell and Danilo. In came Jefte, Lyall Cameron, new signing Oliver Antman and Cyriel Dessers and the quality of the performance was stark, vindicating Martin's decisions. Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama terrorised the full-backs, Cameron added energy in the middle of the park, Aarons looked more comfortable at right-back and Dessers linked up play well upfront. Martin will be expecting more of the same against a struggling Dundee side on Saturday evening. Advertisement Steven Pressley's outfit lost 2-1 to Hibs in their Premiership curtain raiser and pressure is already mounting on the Dark Blues boss after a disappointing Premier Sports Cup campaign. Pressley, who replaced sacked Tony Docherty in June, admits his squad is far short of where he would like it to be after 12 players left in the summer, including Cameron.
