Clyde confident for season ahead, says Craig Howie as side set for Dumbarton opener

The Bully Wee are ready to kick-off their League Two campaign this weekend Clyde star Craig Howie says there's a real sense of confidence about the club as they head into their League Two opener at Dumbarton on Saturday. ‌ The New Douglas Park club's Premier Sports Cup ended in a 3-0 defeat at Morton on Saturday, having drawn 2-2 at home to Stenhousemuir on Tuesday, winning the shoot-out 4-3 for the extra point. ‌ That left the Bully Wee third in Group G, behind winners Motherwell and runners-up Morton, with six points from their four games. ‌ But Howie, from Rutherglen, reckons it will have them well prepared for the challenge ahead. He said: 'It's always good to get some wins and good performances in the bag. Everyone knows it's a completely different ball game when the league starts, but it's always good to get a bit of momentum, and there seems to be a bit of confidence about the place at the moment. 'I'd like to think we can take that into the league campaign. 'I think every single game in League Two is going to be really tough and competitive, there's not going to be any stand-outs at the bottom or the top, so it's all to play for. 'But this is one we're really looking forward to – we've got a couple of boys that we've signed who were playing with Dumbarton last season and vice-versa, so it should be a good game. It's really important to get off to a good start.' ‌ Howie bagged his first goal of the season in the last-gasp 2-1 win over Peterhead at the Balmoor Stadium, equalling last season's tally, and he wants more. He said: 'As a defender, you're more focused on trying to keep clean sheets, but it's good to get one so early on, and it probably takes away a wee bit of pressure. 'It's one I can look to build on, and I need to challenge myself to get more goals, because it's something I don't do enough of, particularly with the amount of corners and stuff Clyde get. 'I'm definitely challenging myself. I'm not putting a number on it, but I'm definitely looking to get a few more over the season.'

Clyde goal hero hails 'whirlwind' win over Peterhead as he eyes Morton clash

Craig Howie scored to spark an unlikely comeback win at Peterhead Craig Howie says Clyde snatched a 'cheeky' win at Peterhead in a crazy end to their Premier Sports Cup clash on Saturday. ‌ The hosts led 1-0 through an 82nd-minute Kieran Shanks penalty four minutes into stoppage time, but Howie and debutant Mouhamed Niang netted within one minute and 43 seconds of each other to take the points back home. ‌ That left the Bully Wee on four points going into a clash at home to Stenhousemuir on Tuesday, where they drew 2-2 and won 4-3 on penalties. ‌ That leaves Clyde on six points with their last Group G fixture at Morton on Saturday. With Motherwell having won the group, the best they can hope for is a best runners-up slot if they can beat Dougie Imrie's side. Rutherglen man Howie said: 'It was a bit of a whirlwind finish. There really wasn't much in the game and we were quite disappointed to be 1-0 down quite late on. 'I didn't actually realise how late the two goals were, but we knew we had to throw everything at it. ‌ 'We put a longer ball into the box, and luckily I was just able to get my head on it, direct it on target, and I'm not really sure how it made its way in, but it ended up in the bottom corner. 'Then literally straight from kick-off we went up and did the exact same thing again, bundled a goal in and snatched a victory that really wasn't looking likely at one point. ‌ 'It was the 94th and 96th minute, which is a bit crazy. I don't think I've ever been involved in a game where we scored two so late on, but I would say on the balance of play that we deserved at least a draw. 'A victory might have been a bit cheeky, but we'll take it!' Howie, 29, knows Clyde are up against it to be part of the last-16, and said: 'It's a great result and it's a really difficult cup to progress in, especially when you're looked at as one of the lower teams in the group, being in League Two. 'It would be huge for the club to potentially progress in this cup. It's probably not expected of any of the League Two teams to get through, because it's only one team that goes through, and then a small number of second-placed teams. 'For any League Two clubs to progress would be really good, and it would be really good for Clyde, so there will be a big push from all the boys there to get it over the line.'

Jens Berthel Askou happy with 'good amount to learn' from Motherwell draw

New Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou claimed there was a 'good amount of learning ' to take from his side's 2-2 Premier Sports Cup draw with Clyde at New Douglas Park. In his first game in the Well technical area, the Dane watched Bully Wee striker James Hilton put the League Two side ahead after just 16 minutes with a goal from distance. Fir Park attacker Tawanda Maswanhise scored twice to put the William Hill Premiership side ahead but Liam Scullion levelled in the 53rd minute and – with no more goals – the Steelmen took the bonus point with a 5-4 penalty shootout win. Askou told the club's official X account: 'Yeah, you can always look at it from two perspectives and say, 'yeah, it's not good enough, we didn't win – we should have won'. 'But we also knew that it could be really, really difficult and we weren't sharp enough in the moment. 'We had a big chance at the end where we could have closed the game down. 'The second goal they get is not good enough in terms of the standards that we want and then suddenly you have a result that's a little bit tricky and not what you want. 'But that's football. I'm sure that this game will not define the journey we are (on) with this club. 'But it was a good learning step in terms of dealing with a little bit of frustration, irritation, that it wasn't as fluent as we wanted to be and then how to deal with that and keep the body language positive and so in terms of that, there's a good amount of learning in it.' Clyde v Motherwell: Clyde boss hopes to catch Motherwell cold in cup

Darren Young says facing Premiership opposition is a good test for his side Darren Young hopes his Clyde side can catch Motherwell cold in their Premier Sports Cup opener on Saturday. But he also says the game will very much be used to concentrate on what Clyde want to do. ‌ As a part-time team, the Bully Wee are still in the throes of pre-season, as Young tries to build his squad for an assault on League Two. ‌ He said: 'It's a good gauge, it's always good to test yourself, and it will give us a good idea of where we're at. 'There will be a difference in fitness and sharpness, possibly, but you hope you can catch them cold in the first game. 'We're not able to find out too much about them just now because they were abroad, and we can't see any of their games, or send scouts out to Holland! 'We'll concentrate on what we want to do, and hopefully we can take the opportunity. 'I quite like the Premier Sports Cup. You can have a couple of trialists, which is good at part-time level, if you're struggling for bodies or numbers. ‌ 'Sometimes pre-season games become pre-season games, and it's good to see guys being tested against the other teams in the cup.' Young is looking to bring in a goalkeeper to challenge first-choice Brian Kinnear, and another attacker, but wants to strengthen in general. 'We've got maybe another one or two who have agreed to sign, who we're about to add to the squad, but we're around the 20 mark or 21,' said Young. 'At this time of year, boys are maybe holding out for full-time things, and have to look down the ladder.'

Clyde striker aims to fire them up League Two and relishes Well showdown

Scott Williamson admits it's a big season for him and the Bully Wee Striker Scott Williamson admits it's a big season as he looks to fire Clyde up the League Two table. And the 24-year-old, left, is relishing a chance to get stuck in to Motherwell in the Bully Wee's Premier Sports Cup opener at the Hamilton Community Stadium on Saturday. ‌ Former Cambuslang Rangers hit man Williamson, from Fernhill, joined from Queen's Park in February this year, having been on loan at Kelty Hearts for the first half of last season, and netted 12 times in 37 games in total. ‌ He's looking to hit the ground running and said: 'You want to do well in the cup, but because it is so early on, you want to get competitive minutes under your belt as well, just to get that feeling for the league. 'But we get to play against Premiership clubs like Motherwell as well, so it's a good experience. 'Last year when I was at Kelty we played against Hibs and beat them, so hopefully we can put up a good game against Motherwell on Saturday.' Williamson netted in a 1-0 win over Queen's Park earlier this summer and hopes for more. He said: 'Pre-season has been quite good, but for the first couple of weeks I was just getting back to fitness, because I missed the last three or four weeks of the season with an injury. ‌ 'It's just getting back up to speed, but every week I've felt a lot fitter, so I'm just looking forward to the games starting. 'I was happy to get the goal, and after you get your first one, hopefully they all just keep falling in like that.' Williamson hopes for a good season with Clyde, rather than fighting the drop. He said: 'Hopefully we can get off to a good start. In the last couple of years, Clyde hasn't started the best and it has been a dogfight relegation battle come February, so hopefully it's nothing like that this season. 'Hopefully we can push for the play-offs or even winning the league.'
