‘Could take 50 years': Gurugram startup founder on India matching Japan's life

India Today27-05-2025

India has recently become the world's fourth-largest economy by size, but when it comes to how much the average person earns, the story changes. Gurugram-based startup founder Aashish S pointed this out in a social media post, urging people not to get carried away by big numbers. He wrote on LinkedIn, 'Celebrating vanity metrics is a futile activity. India's current per capita GDP is equivalent to Japan's in the 1950s,' He added, 'A not so perfect analogy. UP is India's 5th largest state economy. But its per capita GDP is less than 3/5th African countries.'
advertisementAshish explained that Uttar Pradesh is India's fifth-largest state economy. But its income per person is lower than that of nearly 60% of African countries.
He warned that even if Japan's growth stalls, it would still take India over two decades just to catch up in income. And to reach Japan's current quality of life? That could take 50 years.WHAT'S HOLDING INDIA BACK?According to Aashish, there are a few major factors holding India back. One of the biggest is income inequality, the gap between the rich and poor is far too wide.Another concern is the lack of proper investment in key areas like manufacturing and infrastructure, which slows down long-term growth. He also stresses that India is falling behind in STEM education, which limits our ability to compete in a modern, tech-driven world.advertisementOn top of that, India is lagging behind in STEM education — science, technology, engineering, and maths — which are critical for building a skilled workforce.Japan, on the other hand, has made great progress in city planning, healthcare, infrastructure and manufacturing, all areas where India still needs serious work, Aashish added.WHAT ABOUT GOVERNMENT SCHEMES?Aashish also questioned the real impact of big-ticket schemes like the Smart Cities Mission and Make in India. He asked, 'Is there even a single smart city yet or why has share of manufacturing being decreasing since the launch of Make in India?'His message was clear, instead of celebrating headlines, we need accountability, honest review, and course corrections. In other words, India has the scale and potential. But to match countries like Japan, it will take more than numbers. It will take planning, focus, and a strong push to improve the everyday lives of its people.Must Watch

Rwanda quits Central African bloc in dispute with Congo

KIGALI, - Rwanda has said it would withdraw from the Economic Community of Central African States , underscoring diplomatic tensions in the region over an offensive this year by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in eastern Congo. Kigali had expected to assume the chairmanship of the 11-member bloc at a meeting on Saturday in Equatorial Guinea. Instead, the bloc kept Equatorial Guinea in the role, which Rwanda's foreign ministry denounced as a violation of its rights. Rwanda, in a statement, condemned Congo's "instrumentalization" of the bloc and saw "no justification for remaining in an organization whose current functioning runs counter to its founding principles." It wasn't clear if Rwanda's exit from the bloc would take immediate effect. The office of Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi said in a statement that ECCAS members had "acknowledged the aggression against the Democratic Republic of Congo by Rwanda and ordered the aggressor country to withdraw its troops from Congolese soil." M23 seized eastern Congo's two largest cities earlier this year, with the advance leaving thousands dead and raising concerns of an all-out regional war. African leaders along with Washington and Doha have been trying to broker a peace deal. Congo, the U.N. and Western powers accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 by sending troops and weapons. Rwanda has long denied helping M23, saying its forces were acting in self-defence against Congo's army and ethnic Hutu militiamen linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide that killed around 1 million people, mostly ethnic Tutsis. U.S. President Donald Trump's administration hopes to strike a peace accord between Congo and Rwanda that would also facilitate billions in Western investment in the region, which is rich in minerals including tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper and lithium. ECCAS was established in the 1980s to foster cooperation in areas like security and economic affairs among its member states.

Vijay Mallya, rebranding a persona

Idefine a brand simply. The brand is a thought. A thought that lives on in a person's mind. This week, one such personal brand that lives in our collective thoughts jumped out of the blue and back into our public consciousness. Dr Vijay Mallya. While many who write on Vijay Mallya avoid the honorific, I still use it. The idea is to preserve what he wanted to be addressed as in public space, never mind the fact that he is a 'fugitive' on the run out of India accused in alleged economic offences done in India. In many ways, I stoked the fire. I put up a LinkedIn post right after the stellar IPL win by RCB. The Royal Challengers were no longer challengers, they were champions. In my post I said a simple thing: 'As we celebrate the success of RCB @18, it is important for brands to credit those who deserve it. RCB is today an IPL sensation. A business sensation even. It took a lot. Every brand has 'nayaks' & 'khalnayaks'. The role of Mallya as the builder of RCB cannot be forgotten. We must speak the correct along with the politically-incorrect.' I ended with, 'What say?' I have some 1,76,000-plus impressions on the post, growing by the minute. And people said a lot. I got a lot of flak. And crazily, a lot of admiration for calling a spade a spade. This got me thinking. And right then dropped the VM podcast. All this was preceded by his posts that told the world at large and his 5.6 million followers that he was still avidly tracking the IPL, ball by ball. In the podcast, VM said sorry to the Kingfisher Airlines staff whom he had left high and dry after the fiasco. He jolly well needed to. This is his big crime of omission and commission. The VM brand does not seem to be down and out, as most believe him to be. He is alive and kicking. And kicking a lot after the RCB win. As Brand VM is in focus again, let me quickly examine what went wrong and what went right for it. What went right first. VM did well when he decided to get his branding act right. He decided to step out of the mould of his father, the renowned Vittal Mallya. He realised that the business of spirits needed a spirited imagery that all the boring use of film stars in surrogate advertising could not handle.

OPEC+ giants ramp up additional oil to India; market share nears 78%; supplied 375,000 bpd to India in May

NEW DELHI: India's top four oil suppliers and key members of the OPEC+ alliance, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, and the UAE have significantly ramped up production and directed a major portion of the additional output to India. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Their collective market share has reached approximately 78% in India, the world's third-largest oil consumer. These nations have supplied an additional 375,000 barrels per day (bpd) to India in May compared to April, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. The collective increase surpassed their committed additional production of 359,000 bpd under Opec+'s output expansion plan of 409,000 bpd. Russia maintained its leading position among India's crude suppliers due to ongoing barrel discounts. In the OPEC+ May supply increase, Saudi Arabia agreed to raise output by 166,000 bpd, Russia by 79,000 bpd, Iraq by 37,000 bpd and the UAE by 77,000 bpd. Their exports to India increased by 135,673 bpd, 114,016 bpd, 66,642 bpd and 58,365 bpd respectively, resulting in market shares of 13.1%, 35.4%, 21.4% and 7.6% in May. Their combined share increased by 8.1 percentage points to 77.5%. African suppliers' share decreased to 4.9% from 11.8%, whilst US crude exports to India reduced to 5.7% from 7%. Saudi Arabia, the largest contributor to the group's supply increase, delivered the highest additional volume to India in May, increasing its market share to 13.1%, a 3% point rise from April. This increase resulted from price reductions offered to Asian purchasers, with Saudi Aramco reducing the May OSP for Arab Light by $2.30 per barrel. The premium has decreased to $1.20 above the Oman/Dubai benchmark for Asian buyers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now For July loadings, the premium remains at $1.20, after a brief increase to $1.40 for June. "The recent Saudi Aramco's official selling price (OSP) cuts for May loadings, close to four-year low, along with the widening Brent-Dubai Exchange of Futures for Swaps (EFS) made Middle Eastern crude grades more competitively priced than other Brent-linked crudes," Xavier Tang, market analyst at Vortexa said, according to the Economic Times. "Production increases from Saudi Arabia and other OPEC members play an essential role in the Dubai crude price structure," he added. Eight OPEC+ nations have committed to increase output by an additional 411,000 bpd in June and July. The increased supply has affected prices, which have remained between $60-65 per barrel for over two months, significantly below the 2024 average of $80. Saudi Arabia's competitive pricing approach reflects the global competition for India's expanding crude market. "Saudi is offering attractive prices to gain share in India," an Indian refinery executive told the outlet.
