Trader charged with dangerous driving resulting in motorcyclist's death

SEREMBAN : A trader pleaded not guilty in the magistrates' court here today to a charge of dangerous driving resulting in the death of a motorcyclist in a road crash at Matahari Heights early this month.
P Mohan, 45, made the plea before magistrate Nurul Farha Sulaiman.
He was charged with driving a van in a dangerous manner and causing the death of Muhammad Annas Iskandar Mohd Khairi, 21, at the traffic lights at Persiaran Senawang 1, Matahari Heights, here at 11.59pm on May 3.
The charge, under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of RM50,000, as well as disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for not less than five years, upon conviction.
The court allowed him bail of RM7,000 with one surety and ordered the suspension of his driving licence pending disposal of the case.
The court also set July 3 for mention for the submission of documents, including reports from the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre, as well as the forensic and chemist reports.
Lawyer Rajindar Singh, representing Mohan, had sought a lower bail, saying his client, who earned between RM3,000 and RM3,500 a month, was self-employed.
He said Mohan's wife sold flowers and that the couple was supporting two children aged 21 and 22 who were still studying.
Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Ezzati Mohd Zainal appeared for the prosecution.

Zairil Withdraws Defamation Suit After Activists Retract Unfounded Allegations
GEORGE TOWN, June 5 (Bernama) -- State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari today withdrew his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution, following their retraction of allegedly defamatory remarks made during the 2023 Penang State Election. Zairil confirmed the withdrawal at the Penang Sessions Court, stating that all parties acknowledged the allegations were unfounded. 'The case has reached its conclusion at the Penang Sessions Court today. Both defendants have retracted their statements and expressed sincere regret over the matter. 'As a result, I have agreed to withdraw my suit against them. May this serve as a lesson to always verify your facts before making unfounded allegations and irresponsible claims,' Zairil said in a statement posted on Facebook.
