WTA Reinstates Banned Coach Stefano Vukov; Rejoins With Elena Rybakina: Report

Stefano Vukov is eligible to return to WTA events after his suspension was lifted. Rybakina, who split with Vukov before the 2024 U.S. Open, has publicly supported him.
The WTA Tour has confirmed that Stefano Vukov, coach of 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, is eligible to return to its events following the lifting of his suspension for a potential breach of the organization's code of conduct.
Rybakina split with Vukov last August, just days ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open, before appointing Goran Ivanisevic in November.
Vukov was provisionally suspended in January while the WTA investigated an alleged safeguarding violation. In February, the tour announced that the investigation had concluded but that his ban would remain in place. At the time, no public timeline was given for his return.
On Friday, the WTA confirmed that Vukov will once again be allowed credentials, granting him access to player areas and practice courts at its tournaments.
'The WTA is fully committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all athletes and other participants, as set out in our WTA Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Code," the organization said in a statement.
'Any sanctions issued following a breach of these safeguarding rules are carefully considered and are subject to appeal before an independent tribunal. While case details remain confidential, we can confirm that Mr. Vukov is eligible to receive credentials at WTA events."
Rybakina, currently ranked No. 10 in the world, has maintained public support for Vukov throughout the process. Ahead of the 2023 U.S. Open, she announced they had parted ways, but later confirmed before this year's Australian Open that he had rejoined her team.
She has repeatedly stated that Vukov never mistreated her during their time working together.
Rybakina recently reached the semifinals of the National Bank Open in Montreal, where she was defeated by Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, who went on to win the title.
The Kazakh star will now look to continue her form with Vukov officially back on her coaching bench as the season enters its decisive phase.

Chennai Grandmasters Day 7: Vincent Keymer Closes In On Title As Anish Giri Holds Arjun Erigaisi

Last Updated: Keymer's win over Liang Awonder took him to the brink of glory in Chennai with just two rounds left to be played as Erigaisi was held to yet another draw by Dutchman Giri. Indian hope Arjun Erigaisi was held to yet another draw in the ongoing edition of the Chennai Grandmasters on Wednesday, as he had to be happy with splitting the points with Dutchman Anish Giri, who registered his seventh-straight tie at the Hyatt Regency. Masters leader Vincent Keymer inched closer to the title as his opponent on the day, American Liang Awonder, decided to resign as the German took his points tally to five and a half points with four wins and three draws, and remains unbeaten. Nihal Sarin got back to winning ways as he triumphed over American Ray Robson, while Karthikeyan Murali bested Vidit Gujrathi, while Jorden Van Foreest's winning run was brought to an end by Pranav V, who fought back valiantly to pick up half-a-point. Keymer leads the table and stands on the cusp of glory as a better result than Erigiaisi on the penultimate day would seal his supremacy at the Tamil Nadu Capital City. Abimanyu Puranik had to settle for a draw with Aryan Chopra in the challengers section, as did Adhiban B and Iniyan Pa, who also registered a draw in the fixture between the two Indian prospects. Pranesh M got the better of Vaishali R, who is still in search of a win at the event with just two games left to go. Leon Luke Mendoca posted a win over Diptayan Ghosh to add to his tally. Harika Dronvalli slumped to another defeat as Harshavardhan GB got the better of the seasoned campaigner. Pranesh and Mendoca remain inseparable at the top of the Challengers table ahead of the final two rounds of play. Badminton World Championships: Lakshya Sen Faces World No 1 In Opener As Indians Handed Tough Draws

Last Updated: In women's singles, PV Sindhu, a five-time medallist at the event, has a relatively easy first round. Lakshya Sen will begin his campaign against world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi of China as Indian shuttlers received challenging draws for the World Championships starting on August 25. This will mark the fifth meeting between the two shuttlers, with Shi holding a superior 3-1 lead in their head-to-head record against the Indian, who won a bronze medal in the 2021 edition of the tournament. Former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lakshya has struggled to regain his form since his semifinal loss at the Paris Olympics last year. The 23-year-old from Almora, currently ranked 21, has faced consistency issues this season, achieving only a quarterfinal finish at the All England. Lakshya has shown glimpses of his potential but has struggled to close out key matches this season. Another men's singles bronze medallist, HS Prannoy, will start against the lower-ranked Joakim Oldorff of Finland. However, a likely second-round clash with world No. 2 Anders Antonsen of Denmark awaits the world No. 34 Indian. In women's singles, PV Sindhu, the most successful Indian shuttler in the tournament and a five-time medallist, has a relatively easy first round. She begins her campaign against world No. 66 Kaloyana Nalbantova of Bulgaria. However, the two-time Olympic medallist and 2019 champion, who has also struggled for form recently, could meet world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi of China in the round of 16. For Sindhu, now ranked 15, a quarterfinal appearance at the India Open remains her best result this year. The 30-year-old former world champion has suffered multiple early exits. The top Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have received a first-round bye. In the second round, they will face either compatriots Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruben Kumar, or Chinese Taipei's Liu Kuang Heng and Yang Po Han. But a potential round-of-16 clash looms against world No. 6 Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who lead the Indians 6-2 in head-to-head meetings. If they get past the Chinese duo, Satwik and Chirag could encounter their long-time foes, Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who have beaten them 11 times in 14 encounters, including the Paris Olympic quarterfinals. However, it has been a season of steady performances for the world No. 3 pair, who have reached the semifinals at the India Open, Singapore Open, and Malaysia Open, as well as the quarterfinals at the Indonesia Open. 'Dewald Brevis, Kwena Maphaka Will Be…': Chris Morris' Massive Prediction For SA20 Auction'

Last Updated: Chris Morris looks forward to SA20 Season 4 Player Auction. With a USD 7.4 million purse, 84 slots are open. Morris names Kwena Mphaka and Dewald Brevis as top picks. With the SA20 Season 4 Player Auction just around the corner, former Proteas all-rounder Chris Morris believes this year's dynamics will make for fascinating viewing. The six franchises will have a combined purse of USD 7.4 million to fill 84 slots and complete their 19-player squads — making this the biggest SA20 auction since the league's inception in 2022. Speaking to SuperSport ahead of the Season 4 auction, Morris asserted that the likes of Kwena Maphaka and Dewald Brevis will attract big bucks. Both youngsters have been phenomenal in the ongoing bilateral series against Australia. Brevis smashed a scintillating hundred in the second T20I in Darwin and is currently the second-highest run-getter of the series. Maphaka, on the other hand, is leading the wicket charts with seven scalps in 2 matches. He returned 4/20 in the first T20I, becoming the youngest bowler to pick a four-wicket haul in the shortest format of the game. 'The auction is always exciting, no matter the tournament, but SA20 is the big one, with most of the players back in the pool. There have been a lot of retentions and several wild cards picked up, so it will be interesting to see how the teams go about building their squads," Morris said. 'I think Kwena Maphaka is going to be at the centre of a bidding frenzy. Dewald Brevis is another, given he hasn't been retained. Rassie van der Dussen, with his experience, could also be in demand. Personally, I always look out for the player who ends up going for a surprisingly high price — the buy of the tournament that no one saw coming. For me, Delano Potgieter could be that player." 'He's been successful in SA20, has done well for MI Cape Town, and is a proven performer in domestic cricket. He covers multiple roles and adds great balance to a squad — the kind of player I'd sign straight away," Morris added. The deadline for player registrations, both local and overseas, is fast approaching, with the cut-off set for Monday, August 18, 2025, at 20:30 IST. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
