Road not upgraded despite millions being spent
DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala says this is despite the promises made by former Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, in 2016 that the Gauteng Government would refurbish the road.
'This road remains in terrible condition. It is unrehabilitated and poses a safety risk for motorists and pedestrians, contradicting the Gauteng Department of Transport and Logistics MEC, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela's claim that the road was upgraded and the project was well implemented. '
In response to a question from the DA in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), Diale-Tlabela stated that R23.4m was paid to two service providers and R8.6m to 12 subcontractors for the upgrade of Evaton Road; this amount totals R32m. She further explained that the project was initiated on 17 October 2016 and completed on 30 August 2017, and that the department is happy with the work done, as the project was well implemented.
Chabalala says they will request the chairperson of the Roads and Transport Portfolio Committee in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to arrange an oversight inspection to assess the state of the roads.
'Should the committee confirm that the roads were not upgraded. We will report the MEC to the GPL Ethics Committee for misleading the House that the road was upgraded.'

Panyaza Lesufi reshuffles department heads after damning audit report
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has taken tough action taken against departmental heads following the release of a damning forensic report revealing that at least R1.8 billion in budget underspending and missed service delivery targets in the province. On Sunday, Lesufi addressed the media on the outcomes of the recently concluded a set of forensic investigation reports, which have been finalised by the Provincial Forensic Audit Unit. This latest release follows an earlier briefing held on 24 June 2025, where the Premier made public the outcomes of 47 forensic reports. "On the 17th of July, I responded to matters from our ethical council that responded to members or heads of departments who could not finish or conclude their lifestyle audits. I also indicated on the 17th of July that there were departments that underspent seriously. The total underspending at the time was R1.8 billion. It has now gone to R1.3 billion after the authorisation of some of the transactions that we requested be carried over. To me, this was a serious underspending by heads of departments. Some departments have missed their departmental performance targets, and we took serious exception," he said. Lesufi said some of the reasons are due to service delivery challenges, and as a result, he has acted to ensure that this does not continue. "With the serious challenges of service delivery, we cannot afford departments that are missing their targets. We also found some audit outcomes, which indicated that some departments are not performing ideally. Within that context, I have decided to reshuffle and reset heads of departments and remove other heads of departments from their responsibilities. From the 1st of August," he stated. Responding to Lesufi, the DA Provincial Chief Whip in the Gauteng Legislature, Mike Moriarty stated: "Our experience is that this Premier has the habit of creating positive spin to cover failure. For example, he refers to having previously issued 47 such reports, and now he is following this up with others. "The fact is, we have examined those previous reports, and indeed, they only relate to 37 cases and not the 47 that he claims. Moreover, these reports are heavily redacted and convey no information as regards people implicated therein and give no details regarding the disciplinary and criminal consequences that should have arisen in this case." Lesufi said the affected changes and reshuffle to HODs and other personnel, include e-government, infrastructure, education, treasury, COGTA, transport, human settlements, agriculture, environmental development, education, health, among others. "I am pleased that I have appointed a new HOD for the Department of Economic Development, Mr Matlatjo Moholwa, who brings a wealth of experience into public service. He has served as part of economic research and chief economist in the City of Johannesburg and the lead economist for the Land Bank, and Deputy Director General in Mpumalanga and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development. With the challenges that we are going to have with the US in terms of the tariffs, and the need for us to reposition the economy of Gauteng, we needed a chief economist to lead us in this department," he stated. The Gauteng premier announced the release of dozens of more forensic reports following investigations into dozens of departments Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi on Sunday announced that he has removed or reshuffled several heads of departments within the provincial government. He said this comes after forensic investigation reports were released, detailing corruption and maladministration. 'Corruption continues to be one of the country's most pressing challenges, undermining effective governance and sustainable development,' said Lesufi. 'Mr Moholwa brings with him a wealth of experience in the public service. He has served as the head of economic research and chief economist in the City of Johannesburg, a lead economist for the Land Bank and the deputy director general (DDG) in the Mpumalanga and Gauteng departments of economic development.' Reports detail 'wide range of misconduct' The 39 forensic reports mentioned by Lesufi on Sunday follow the 47 reports announced by the premier on 24 June. 'The released reports detail investigations into serious offences and improper behaviour across multiple departments. They cover a wide range of misconduct, from criminal acts to minor breaches of conduct,' he said on Sunday. The Gauteng premier said the reports will not be released at this stage, to avoid 'harming the enforcement or implementation of the recommendations'. 'We are aware that releasing certain details early might disrupt ongoing legal cases or make it harder to follow the recommendations, including putting whistleblowers' identities and safety at risk.' uMngeni councillor murder: Traditional leader uncle among 5 arrested
A suspect accused of killing the late uMngeni municipal councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu was his uncle. According to Zululand Observer, Ndlovu was gunned down at his Masosheni home near Mpophomeni in December 2023. The uncle (56), who is an iNkosi (a Zulu word for 'chief'), was arrested on Wednesday and appeared alongside a 34-year-old accomplice in the Howick Magistrate's Court yesterday. The arrest by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team brings the total number of suspects to five. The matter has been postponed to next Friday for a formal bail application. DA leader Francois Rodgers said the iNkosi is allegedly implicated in a separate case involving the murder of his cousin. 'While the DA welcomes the progress in this case, we remain deeply disappointed by the delays in the arrests. The information that ultimately led to the arrests was already available to the authorities by the DA's independent legal team, yet it was disregarded,' said Rodgers. 'The disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has further weakened the state's ability to address politically motivated crimes. 'The presence of senior SAPS intelligence officials during court proceedings only deepens concerns about whether our intelligence structures are being used effectively and impartially in such politically sensitive matters.' Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi commended the SAPS on the arrest, saying it was a 'significant breakthrough'. Buthelezi praised the task team for their diligent work, which led to this progress and the arrest of more suspects.
