TSB Bank to close 5 more branches in May – full list of locations
TSB Bank will close five more branches across the UK next month as the shift to online banking continues. The shuttered branches will join the bank's wider list of at least 11 to close in 2025.
This move forms part of a broader trend, with thousands of branches already closed in recent years. According to consumer group Which?, more than 6,300 bank and building society branches have closed since January 2015, equating to 53 closures on average every month. A statement from TSB reads: 'The way customers choose to bank with us is changing. Over 95% of transactions are now being made using mobile, online and other ways to bank, instead of in our branches. More customers than ever are using our video and telephone banking service.'
Charities are urging greater protection for in-person banking services, warning that older and vulnerable people risk being left behind in the digital shift. Research by Age UK shows that over four million older Britons with bank accounts do not manage their finances online.
Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said: 'We applaud the banks for coming together to set up shared Hubs, but it's important that alternative services are set up speedily, especially in those areas with the greatest need.
'Physical spaces – whether a bank or building society branch, Banking Hub, or alternative suitable provision – must continue to exist so people can still carry out face-to-face tasks, such as withdrawing and depositing cash, applying for a loan, arranging third party access to their account or starting bereavement proceedings. 'The disappearance of face-to-face banking risks cutting a significant minority of the older population out of an essential service, making it difficult if not impossible for them to manage their money and maintain their independence.'
Hundreds of 'Banking Hubs' have been launched to fill the void left by high street bank branch closures, giving customers access to cash and services no matter who they bank with. People can find their closest location here.

Online shoppers have been increasingly provided the option to pay directly from their bank accounts instead of having to put in all of their credit or debit card information. While this might be convenient for some shoppers and offer some perks, it also carries some significant risks. These new "pay by bank" options have some perks for customers, allowing refunds to be processed instantly and allowing the transacrion to proceed without card details being shared. It also has some perks for businesses, allowing them to bypass card transaction fees and receive customer funds immediately. While this might be alluring to consumers and businesses alike, there are some security concerns. While the "pay by bank" options are increasingly common, Which? money editor Jenny Ross issued a pretty major warning for consumers, pointing out that these sort of payments lacks the Section 75 and chargeback protections associated with other payment methods. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act can hold credit card companies liable for faulty or unfulfilled purchases. This allows shoppers to potentially file chargebacks with their credit card provider and receive refunds even if the retailer fails to reimburse them. These same protections don't exist for "pay by bank" options. 'Innovations like pay by bank present opportunities for businesses and consumers alike, but they're not without risk, particularly as they lack the rigorous purchase protections you get when paying by card," Ross said via The Independent. 'We're calling on the regulator to act to ensure consumers can use pay by bank with confidence, but in the meantime, we'd urge consumers to think carefully before using it to book events or make substantial purchases – for now, your good old-fashioned credit or debit card may be the best option.' Canadians favour other countries over Donald Trump's America, survey suggests
As G7 leaders gather in Kananaskis, Alta., a new poll suggests Canadians are souring on the U.S. and embracing relations with other world powers. The Pollara Strategic Insights survey found net impressions of the U.S. have plunged since President Donald Trump returned to office in January. At the same time, Canadians are feeling positive about the other G7 member nations: Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. 'We've kind of lost our best friend in the United States and maybe, as a country, Canada is now looking toward some of its older friends to reconnect with as a result of that,' said Dan Arnold, Pollara's chief strategy officer, referring to Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods that have led to a trade war between the neighbouring countries. Indeed, the firm polled people in Canada and the U.K. and found similar results on both sides of the Atlantic. Five out of six Canadians — 83 per cent — said the bilateral relationship with Britain was 'important' with only 17 per cent saying it wasn't. Across the pond, 76 per cent of Britons said their country's relationship with Canada was 'important' while about one in four said it was not. The British have a more positive view of Canada (+78 per cent) than any other country in the poll — ahead of Japan (+61 per cent), Germany (+60 per cent), France (+50 per cent) and Ukraine (+47 per cent). But the poll found they have a negative view toward India (-1 per cent), the U.S. (-3 per cent), China (-24 per cent) and Russia (-63 per cent). Among Canadians, Italy has a +66 per cent favourability rating followed by Japan at +64 per cent, the U.K. at +59 per cent, France at +57 per cent, Germany at +54 per cent and Ukraine at +41 per cent. China was at -27 per cent, India at -29 per cent, the U.S. at -47 per cent and Russia at -63 per cent. That's a 60 percentage point drop in Canadian sentiment toward the American since Pollara's survey last year when Joe Biden was U.S. president. Using online panels, Pollara surveyed 3,400 Canadians on May 16-20. While opt-in polls cannot be assigned a margin of error, for comparison purposes, a random sample of this size would have one of plus or minus 1.7 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Similarly, the firm polled 2,511 Britons on May 2-16. The margin of error for comparable surveys is within 1.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. 'If the Americans aren't going to be the number-one ally in many respects for the next three years (of Trump's presidency) … then the Canada-U.K. relationship is something that bears some noting,' said Arnold, pointing out Canada's recently elected Prime Minister Mark Carney used to be governor of the Bank of England. Because of that, 60 per cent of Britons are familiar with him, and of those, 80 per cent had a positive view of Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader on March 9 and was elected April 28. Just seven per cent had a negative view and the rest had no opinion. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is not as well known among Canadians. Only 26 per cent were familiar with him. Of those, 58 per cent had a positive view with 30 per cent negative and the remainder had no opinion. That's an overall +28 per cent for Starmer, who won power last summer. The most admired foreign leader among Canadians was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will attend the G7 summit that begins Sunday. Zelenskyy, whose country was invaded by Russia in 2022, was at +53 per cent, ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron (+46 per cent), German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (+33 per cent), Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba (+31 per cent) and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (+29 per cent). On the negative side of the ledger, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also be at the G7, was at -17 per cent, ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping (-52 per cent), Trump (-66 per cent) and Russian President Vladimir Putin (-69 per cent). Neither Xi nor Putin was invited to Kananaskis.

Tributes paid to Britons feared killed in Air India plane crash
Tributes have been to Britons including a couple of wellness advocates and a family of three who are believed to be among more than 240 people who died after a Gatwick Airport-bound plane crashed in India. Air India confirmed 241 of the 242 people on board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner were killed on Thursday, in one of the deadliest plane crashes in terms of the number of British nationals killed. Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre, were said to be among the dead. The pair laughed and joked as they filmed a video of themselves at the airport before taking off. In an earlier Instagram post they told of their 'mind-blowing' trip to India and their intention to make a vlog about it. Mr Greenlaw is said to have appeared on ITV's This Morning earlier this year to talk about wellness. Former editor of the show Martin Frizell praised his 'vibrancy' and 'enthusiasm'. 'So so sad to hear that Fiongal Greenlaw Meek and his partner are reported to be among the passengers and crew killed today on board the Air India flight bound for Gatwick,' he said in an Instagram post. 'I remember his visit to the studio in January, he was passionate about auras and although I'm a sceptical sort his vibrancy and sheer enthusiasm won folk over. 'And I know for a fact that he hoped to use his appearance on This Morning to build his wellness brand, he had a great future ahead of him. 'Thoughts are with his family and friends and those of his partner Jamie.' The Greenlaw-Meeks were running the Wellness Foundry in London, which offers psychic readings, tarot, reiki and yoga. The firm is included in Time Out's top places in the capital for tarot readings. The Wellness Foundry also has a podcast called Spirit Level, which the website says is a 'guiding light on the journey to holistic well-being and spiritual enlightenment'. The Gloucester Muslim Community group offered 'sincere and deepest condolences' after Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa and their daughter Sara were reported to be among the victims. 'During this moment of overwhelming sorrow, our hearts go out to all those left behind,' a statement said. 'No words can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss, but we pray that the family may find solace in the tremendous outpouring of compassion and solidarity from communities across the world.' Raj Mishra, the mayor of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, called for people to come together as he announced the deaths of three people from his community. 'Among those lost were Raxa Modha, infant Rudra Modha, and Ms K Mistri, all from our Wellingborough community,' he said. 'I extend my deepest condolences to their families, friends and all those affected by this heartbreaking event. 'May their memories be a blessing, and may we come together to support one another in this time of grief.' Briton Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only survivor of the crash. Speaking outside the family home in Leicester, his brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, 27, said: 'We were just shocked as soon as we heard it. 'I last spoke to him yesterday morning. We're devastated, just devastated. 'He said, 'I have no idea how I exited the plane'.' Mr Ramesh's older brother Ajay was also aboard the flight. Another of Mr Ramesh's relatives, Jay, said the survivor spoke to his father after the crash and asked after his brother. Jay told PA: 'After the crash he spoke to his dad worrying about his brother saying, 'Where's Ajay'?'
