Small Business: Giftbox Boutique's journey from garage start-up to pandemic success

We started back in 2016 in a garage, so the quintessential New Zealand business story. When we started out gift baskets were very old fashioned. I felt like there was an opportunity for something that could be much more premium. We also recognised the shift that was starting to happen between traditional bricks and mortar and online shopping.
My background is in marketing, and my husband's is in sales and digital marketing, so we had a good skill set and understanding of what it takes to launch a business online. We jumped into the deep end, quit our jobs, and much to our surprise, as much as anyone else's to be honest, the business has just grown from there.
Giftbox Boutique operated out of co-founder Katie Gray's mum's garage, stacking orders to the ceiling until it had to find a bigger space.
How do you choose what goes into each box?
We have about 150 different gift boxes to choose from which contain a selection of upwards of 200 local New Zealand products, everything from wine and craft beer to home fragrances and homewares.
We're lucky now we're the size we are, we get approached daily with companies that are wanting us to put their products in our boxes. And so we are quite strict in terms of what criteria we work with.
The first thing for us is we're an online store, so our customers can't touch, feel, or smell the product, so it has to look amazing to begin with because they're shopping with their eyes.
Secondly, the product has to be high quality and taste amazing. Thirdly, we also like to partner with New Zealand suppliers where possible. Our preference is typically for products that aren't stocked in a supermarket. For things that feel a little bit more premium, we like to try and partner with some small New Zealand producers, because that's also a nice way for us to be able to help support other small businesses to help them get their brands out to customers.
How was the Covid-19 pandemic for the business?
Covid was a very interesting time for us. We were coming off the back of really strong growth and then retail shut down. I always explain it that it was like adding fuel to a fire, we just went ballistic.
We were lucky that we were still able to operate with a skeleton crew, because at the start things were very unknown, and we were all trying to work out how to work safely, but to still be able to help our customers. Demand just went absolutely crazy, I think we had something like 200%-300% growth during those Covid times.
Growth brings with it its own sets of challenges. One of the things that's always been really important and an absolute non-negotiable for us is product quality. So for us, whether it's one gift box or 1000 gift boxes going out the door, I want them to look equally amazing.
So it was about managing the volume of sales to make sure that output quality didn't decline in any way, because that's our brand and our business, and I want every customer that receives a boutique gift box to have an amazing experience.
Katie and Andy Gray, co-founders of Giftbox Boutique, started the business after spotting a gap in the premium gift box market.
What would be your advice to a budding entrepreneur wanting to start a business?
My biggest piece of advice would be to trust your instincts and just give it a go. I think it's easy to doubt yourself and to spend too long polishing something before getting it out there.
One of the big things, especially with online marketing, is people talk about minimum viable product in terms of getting something live and testing it to see what the feedback is. If you spend too long in your planning phase, you'll never feel ready. There will come a time when you just have to leap, because things won't be 100% perfect.

ASB Business Survey: The Impact Of Trump's Tariffs, According To Kiwi Businesses

Research released today by ASB, supported by Talbot Mills Research, shows Kiwi businesses see US tariffs as more impactful than Covid-19 or the Global Financial Crisis. More than 300 business leaders, including CEOs and founders, contributed to the study, giving their insights on President Trump's recently announced trade policies. Two-thirds (67%) of businesses are concerned about the impact of proposed US tariffs in the next 12 months, with nearly 80% of exporters concerned Kiwi business leaders believe Trump's tariffs will have a more severe global impact than Covid-19 and the GFC Meat, dairy and wine are seen as the most vulnerable within Food and Fibre sector, while businesses predict wool and seafood would fare better Nearly one-quarter (24%) of Kiwi businesses see at least some opportunity in the tariffs More than one-third (39%) of respondents listed support of banks as critical to navigating the current environment Tariffs: a threat and an opportunity for Kiwi businesses ASB's Executive General Manager Business Banking Rebecca James says: 'We're seeing sustained market volatility with the ever-changing political decisions around tariffs, which naturally creates a heightened sense of uncertainty for businesses. It's clear businesses view any proposed US tariffs as troubling, but it's pleasing that nearly a quarter of respondents see opportunity in tariffs too. New Zealand has a reputation on the world stage for ingenuity and a can-do attitude, and we want businesses to know there are things they can do to future-proof and manage risks in turbulent times.' President Trump first announced tariffs in April as part of the 'America First' trade policy, aimed at protecting US industries and addressing the trade deficit. The tariffs are set at 10% for most countries, including New Zealand, with China a notable outlier where a larger tariff has been applied to Chinese origin goods. Additional proposed tariffs higher than the 10% baseline were paused for a 90-day period and will be reviewed in July. Businesses are split on how long potential disruption could last. A slight majority (51%) of Kiwi businesses are optimistic that the economy will recover quickly, while 38% predict a prolonged economic downturn for the country and the remainder were unsure. Taking action key to growth 14% of those surveyed view US tariffs purely as an opportunity, while 10% see them as both a potential risk and an opportunity. Ten percent of businesses and 14% of exporters have already taken action to reduce the negative impacts of tariffs including raising prices, shifting markets or cutting costs. Just under one-third (30%) believe they can make up losses through new customers or cost savings; 25% from operational efficiencies, and 22% from other revenue streams. 22% are unsure, with uncertainty highest among small businesses. 'The current market volatility and geopolitical tension may be our 'new normal', but we've been in positions of global uncertainty before and the research shows Kiwi businesses are already thinking about actions they can take to make their business more resilient and generate returns.' Ms James encourages businesses to stay connected to industry partners, trade advocacy groups and their banks to share knowledge and ideas when it comes to growth and scale. 'Business customers are relying on us more than ever to navigate the current environment, and we're seeing this through an increase in trade finance and a rise in currency hedging enquiries. Our advice is to start exploring options now. We're seeing customers adapting their business strategy in all sorts of ways, so solutions for your business might look like assessing AI to improve workflow, adjusting your supply chain, selling down stock before new inventory orders, building new trade relationships or exploring untapped markets.' Businesses shifting their focus to closer to home More than three-quarters of Kiwi exporters expect the cost of doing business with the US to increase by 10% or more in the next year. Concern is higher among exporters (78%) and increases with business size, with worry growing to 88% among 100+ staff businesses). The potential impacts of tariffs which were of the most concern to businesses include slowing economic growth (39%), increased operating costs (32%) and supply chain disruptions (28%). Nearly one-quarter of businesses are worried about consumer backlash due to price inflation (24%), along with 23% who see a China-US Trade war as unsettling for business. Some of the most explored markets by businesses are China (51%), Australia (37%), European Union (28%) and Southeast Asia (25%). 'The research shows a pendulum swing when it comes to trading partners, with businesses redirecting their attention to our close neighbours. Location seems to be king, with our customers prioritising relationships much closer to home,' says Ms James. 'We're also seeing exporters maintaining high standards and doubling down on premium products to give us an edge on the global stage, even where it costs more for consumers.' The role of banks as a critical support function Businesses see Government lobbying as the most critical tool in helping to reduce the impact of tariffs, with banks the next most important. More than one-third (39%) of respondents listed support of banks as critical, specifically working capital support (31%), risk advice (26%) and trade finance (24%). 'ASB has provided $4.6 billion dollars to Kiwi businesses over the past five years including considerable support to companies looking to expand and navigate opportunities abroad. We have seen increased use of trade finance products, aided by trade credit insurance, enabling businesses to sustainably leverage balance sheets while derisking payment default. We encourage companies doing business overseas to speak with their banker and engage with a trade specialist to ensure your business is in the strongest position," says Ms James. Horticulture love pays off for Goodman

Lydia Goodman has won the Central Otago young grower title. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Lydia Goodman has won the 2025 Central Otago young grower regional title. The Cromwell woman is the assistant orchard manager at Central Orchard Management and packing manager at CentralPac. To take the title, she pitched her skills against four fellow contestants to win the regional event in Cromwell late last week. She will now go on to compete against six other regional winners in the young grower of the year final in Christchurch in September. The 26-year-old was raised on a beef and dairy farm in England and developed a passion for agriculture early. After moving to New Zealand, she transitioned from cattle and crops to cherries, discovering a love for horticulture. "I literally fell into it when I was a backpacker in Wānaka. "My working visa was about to expire, it was post-Covid and the industry was crying out for workers." She snapped up the government's offer of supplementary seasonal employer visas and started work in a cherry orchard in Tarras. "I just loved it, the outdoor work and the passion and leadership in the industry. I have been here ever since." Lydia now has five years of experience managing teams in both orchard and packhouse operations and holds level 3 and 4 certificates in fruit production. She entered the competition to develop her technical skills, build connections with like-minded professionals, and challenge herself. "It was a great experience completing seven modules across the day along with two practical components, and a speech in the evening. "The big one for me was pruning a tree in front of two big names in the field." She manages a team of 12 recognised seasonal employer workers as well as being a manager in the pack house. She loves the outdoor work and the passion and leadership in the industry. "One of the best things is teaching the team how to do their job and seeing the passion develop as they learn and understand things like the physiology of a tree. That really fuels me." Her ambition is to become a Central Otago cherry grower. The runners-up were Jared Loewen, from Stone House Gardens at Roxburgh, who is redeveloping his family's orchard to improve productivity and sustainability, and Mackenzie Maaka, of Cromwell, who is studying level 4 horticultural fruit production at polytechnic. — APL
