
ASB Business Survey: The Impact Of Trump's Tariffs, According To Kiwi Businesses
Research released today by ASB, supported by Talbot Mills Research, shows Kiwi businesses see US tariffs as more impactful than Covid-19 or the Global Financial Crisis. More than 300 business leaders, including CEOs and founders, contributed to the study, giving their insights on President Trump's recently announced trade policies.
Two-thirds (67%) of businesses are concerned about the impact of proposed US tariffs in the next 12 months, with nearly 80% of exporters concerned
Kiwi business leaders believe Trump's tariffs will have a more severe global impact than Covid-19 and the GFC
Meat, dairy and wine are seen as the most vulnerable within Food and Fibre sector, while businesses predict wool and seafood would fare better
Nearly one-quarter (24%) of Kiwi businesses see at least some opportunity in the tariffs

Tariffs: a threat and an opportunity for Kiwi businesses
ASB's Executive General Manager Business Banking Rebecca James says: 'We're seeing sustained market volatility with the ever-changing political decisions around tariffs, which naturally creates a heightened sense of uncertainty for businesses. It's clear businesses view any proposed US tariffs as troubling, but it's pleasing that nearly a quarter of respondents see opportunity in tariffs too. New Zealand has a reputation on the world stage for ingenuity and a can-do attitude, and we want businesses to know there are things they can do to future-proof and manage risks in turbulent times.'
President Trump first announced tariffs in April as part of the 'America First' trade policy, aimed at protecting US industries and addressing the trade deficit. The tariffs are set at 10% for most countries, including New Zealand, with China a notable outlier where a larger tariff has been applied to Chinese origin goods. Additional proposed tariffs higher than the 10% baseline were paused for a 90-day period and will be reviewed in July. Businesses are split on how long potential disruption could last. A slight majority (51%) of Kiwi businesses are optimistic that the economy will recover quickly, while 38% predict a prolonged economic downturn for the country and the remainder were unsure.
Taking action key to growth
14% of those surveyed view US tariffs purely as an opportunity, while 10% see them as both a potential risk and an opportunity. Ten percent of businesses and 14% of exporters have already taken action to reduce the negative impacts of tariffs including raising prices, shifting markets or cutting costs. Just under one-third (30%) believe they can make up losses through new customers or cost savings; 25% from operational efficiencies, and 22% from other revenue streams. 22% are unsure, with uncertainty highest among small businesses.
'The current market volatility and geopolitical tension may be our 'new normal', but we've been in positions of global uncertainty before and the research shows Kiwi businesses are already thinking about actions they can take to make their business more resilient and generate returns.'
Ms James encourages businesses to stay connected to industry partners, trade advocacy groups and their banks to share knowledge and ideas when it comes to growth and scale.
'Business customers are relying on us more than ever to navigate the current environment, and we're seeing this through an increase in trade finance and a rise in currency hedging enquiries. Our advice is to start exploring options now. We're seeing customers adapting their business strategy in all sorts of ways, so solutions for your business might look like assessing AI to improve workflow, adjusting your supply chain, selling down stock before new inventory orders, building new trade relationships or exploring untapped markets.'
Businesses shifting their focus to closer to home
More than three-quarters of Kiwi exporters expect the cost of doing business with the US to increase by 10% or more in the next year. Concern is higher among exporters (78%) and increases with business size, with worry growing to 88% among 100+ staff businesses). The potential impacts of tariffs which were of the most concern to businesses include slowing economic growth (39%), increased operating costs (32%) and supply chain disruptions (28%). Nearly one-quarter of businesses are worried about consumer backlash due to price inflation (24%), along with 23% who see a China-US Trade war as unsettling for business. Some of the most explored markets by businesses are China (51%), Australia (37%), European Union (28%) and Southeast Asia (25%).
'The research shows a pendulum swing when it comes to trading partners, with businesses redirecting their attention to our close neighbours. Location seems to be king, with our customers prioritising relationships much closer to home,' says Ms James.
'We're also seeing exporters maintaining high standards and doubling down on premium products to give us an edge on the global stage, even where it costs more for consumers.'
The role of banks as a critical support function
Businesses see Government lobbying as the most critical tool in helping to reduce the impact of tariffs, with banks the next most important. More than one-third (39%) of respondents listed support of banks as critical, specifically working capital support (31%), risk advice (26%) and trade finance (24%).

Urgent Reform Needed To Address Mental Health Crisis In NZ Construction
Press Release – The Professional Builder Marti Amos says as part of a move to improve financial management in the sector he has now authored a book, The Profitable Builders Playbook, which is aimed at equipping builders with the business acumen needed to navigate these challenges. More needs to be done to address the high rates of suicide in the construction industry, according to the head of one of the world's largest mentoring services for the sector. Recent research shows New Zealand's construction sector is facing a mental health crisis, with suicide rates 25% higher than other sectors and Māori, Pasifika, female, migrant workers, apprentices and labourers among those at higher risk. This is due to a number of factors including financial instability, low pay and lack of mental health support. [1] Marti Amos (Ngāpuhi), a former marketing lecturer at Otago University and the New Zealand-based head of The Professional Builder, says these issues are amplified by the industry's boom-and-bust cycle, cost-of-living crisis and a training model that prioritises trade skills over business acumen. [2] 'Kiwi tradespeople are trained to excel on-site, they are underprepared to manage the multimilliondollar business aspects of their work, with dire consequences for their mental wellbeing. 'Our construction workers account for about 7% of workingage male suicides – with nearly one worker losing his life to suicide each week and the avoidable burden and impact of suicide in the NZ construction industry has been estimated at $1.1 billion per annum,' he says. Amos, whose coaching service has supported over 2,500 building companies worldwide over the past 21 years, says the growing mental health crisis among Kiwi builders requires a radical overhaul of the country's traditional construction model – with greater emphasis on financial literacy a priority. 'The New Zealand building industry is seeing its lowest levels of annual growth over a decade with a rate of just 0.6% in the second quarter of 2024 – a factor that is likely to exacerbate mental health concerns for many in the trade. 'Kiwi builders have been taught how to create outstanding projects, they're brilliant with the tools – but no one has taught them how to build a great business. 'In New Zealand and Australia, builders often employ their own teams and handle every aspect of a project themselves. This contrasts sharply with the U.S. model, where general contractors delegate tasks – reducing the burden on the individual,' he says. Amos says his concerns extend beyond the daily operational stresses that plague many builders. He says that without a proper understanding of financial management, many are left grappling with severe cashflow challenges, working long hours and sacrificing their personal lives – a situation that has, in many cases, led to overwhelming stress and deteriorating mental health. 'When you're constantly worrying about how to pay your subcontractors or secure payroll for the next week, it isn't just your business that suffers – it's your whole life,' he says. Amos says demand for targeted support from builders around the world is growing rapidly and his service, The Professional Builder (TPB), which started with a team of three people in 2004, has expanded to 56 and is projected to reach 100 employees within the next 18 months. Company revenue is also projected to double to $30 million within the same timeframe. He says TPB operates in five main countries: the US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and their fastest growing market – Australia. The company has launched an expansion programme to grow the US market, with plans to increase their physical presence there and establish partnerships with hardware wholesalers, similar to their relationships with Carters, ITM and Mitre 10 in New Zealand. 'With a vital sector at risk and the mental health of thousands hanging in the balance, my message is clear: reform is essential. 'As New Zealand's construction industry stands at a crossroads, stakeholders must adopt a more balanced training model – one that nurtures not only technical excellence but also financial literacy and sustainable business practices. 'This call for change is more than an economic imperative; it is a matter of safeguarding the well-being of those who build our nation,' he says. Cameron Road Changes To Remain At Seventh And Twelfth Avenues
Roading improvements at Seventh Avenue and Twelfth Avenue made as part of the 2021-2024 upgrade of Cameron Road will remain in place it was decided yesterday. Tauranga City Council's City Delivery Committee was presented with options for the future of the two city centre intersections following concerns raised by local businesses about the improvements limiting their customers' ability to reach them. For Seventh Avenue, there was also concern that reduced access was affecting leasing opportunities. Councillors acknowledged that the feedback received from the community did not give this outcome unanimous support but they were making decisions for the future. They recognised that businesses had already suffered from long delays on Cameron Road Stage 1, and they felt that the roading improvements already made were the best option. A vote was carried to maintain the status quo of the Seventh Avenue cul de sac because reopening the intersection with Cameron Road would result in a loss of parking on Cameron Road which a recent survey identified was of high value to local businesses and had implications for the future form and function of Cameron Road. Parking concerns raised by both residents and businesses as part of the survey also identified the need to provide more parking in the area, so a vote was also carried to add additional on-street parking on Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Avenues. While there was real concern expressed for the challenges experienced by the businesses on Twelfth Avenue, a decision was made to keep the 'no right turn' from Cameron Road into Twelfth Avenue in place due to safety concerns with vehicles having to cross two traffic lanes, a bus lane and a cycleway when making a right turn into Twelve Avenue. Head of Transport Mike Seabourne told the committee that because the Cameron Road improvements had been designed to accommodate future growth in the city, particularly in Te Papa and Tauriko West, it was a very 'future-like' design which he acknowledged was 'awkward' for the community to understand and get behind. Councillor Kevin Schuler said it was important to address the parking issues identified in the Seventh Avenue area so he believed that should be done now and if there was still ongoing disquiet about the cul de sac that a decision about reopening it could be revisited later. Councillor Marten Rozeboom said reinstating a right turn into Twelfth Avenue from Cameron Road would affect the flow of traffic between Fifteenth Avenue and Elizabeth Street, and while some people were always disaffected or disadvantaged by change, it was working well for most of Tauranga. Councillor Rod Taylor said while the rush of the Cameron Road project and the impact of COVID-19 meant that consultation at the time 'wasn't 100%' there has now been an opportunity for the community to be heard. 'The result isn't going to be what everyone is wanting but the fact we've looked at it again is good for the community and a lot of people now understand the design of the road and long-term intention.'

There has been a 27 per cent year-on-year reduction in natural gas reserves, dropping to 948 petajoules from 1,300 in 2024, which was 20 per cent down on the previous year. Production is now forecast below 100 PJ by 2026, rather than 2029, as previously forecast. Energy Resources Aotearoa Chief Executive John Carnegie says the $200 million Crown co-investment in new domestic gas projects, the removal of the 2018 exploration ban, and changes proposed through the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill are all great signs that the Government is working hard to turn the corner on the deindustrialisation of the New Zealand economy. 'We acknowledge the Government is moving to support the strong potential of our domestic gas supply. But only time will tell if this will be enough.' Carnegie says the ongoing challenges with gas supply underscore the urgent need for proactive measures to secure energy stability and support New Zealand's economic resilience. 'We know there are still prospective fields out there – now we need to see the right conditions continue so that we can unlock the supply. Kiwi businesses are doing it tough as gas supply becomes further constrained. We desperately need more natural gas in the market to ensure electricity is available to keep the lights on and our export economy thriving.' Currently, we're witnessing the consequences of a shrinking domestic gas supply: higher prices, the use of imported coal, and uncertainty for industrial users, Carnegie says. 'Natural gas plays a critical role in supporting renewables, powering industry, and keeping energy affordable and reliable. Gas production projects underpin everything from electricity to industrial manufacturing. If we don't continue to work hard on securing more domestic gas for New Zealand, we risk higher prices, more imported coal use, and further instability.' If New Zealand can get this right, the benefits are enormous: jobs, royalties, export earnings, and the confidence of regional businesses to expand, knowing they have secure and affordable energy for the future.
