Iran may hold nuclear talks with European powers next week

Deccan Herald4 days ago
Iran, Britain, France and Germany could hold talks next week on Tehran's nuclear programme, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday, following warnings by the three European countries that failure to resume negotiations would lead to international sanctions being reimposed on Iran.
"The principle of talks has been agreed upon, but consultations are continuing on the time and place of the talks. The country in which the talks could be held next week has not been finalised," Tasnim reported, quoting a source informed on the matter.
The report on possible talks comes a few days after the foreign ministers of the so-called E3 nations, as well as the European Union's foreign policy chief, held their first call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi since Israel and the U.S. attacked Iranian nuclear facilities a month ago.
The three European countries, along with China and Russia, are the remaining parties to a 2015 nuclear deal reached with Iran – from which the United States withdrew in 2018 – that lifted sanctions on the Middle Eastern country in return for restrictions on its nuclear programme.
The E3 have said they would restore U.N. sanctions on Tehran via the so-called "snapback mechanism" by the end of August if nuclear talks that were ongoing between Iran and the U.S. before the Israel-Iran air war do not resume or fail to produce concrete results.
"If EU/E3 want to have a role, they should act responsibly, and put aside the worn-out policies of threat and pressure, including the 'snap-back' for which they lack absolutely moral and legal ground," Araqchi said earlier this week.

Trump warns immigration is ‘killing' Europe, urges leaders to ‘get act together'

US President Donald Trump on Saturday ramped up his rhetoric on immigration, claiming that it is 'killing' Europe and warned European leaders to take action or risk losing their continent. Speaking to reporters in Scotland after stepping off Air Force One, Trump said: 'On immigration, you better get your act together. You're not going to have Europe anymore. You got to get your act together.' 'You got to stop the horrible invasion that's happening to Europe, many countries in Europe.' Trump, whose own parents were European immigrants, his mother from Scotland and father of German descent, added that some leaders in Europe had resisted immigration pressures and should receive more recognition: 'Some [leaders] have not let it happen, and they're not getting the proper credit. I could name them right now, but I'm gonna embarrass other ones. This immigration is killing Europe.' .@POTUS in Scotland: 'On immigration, you better get your act together or you're not going to have Europe anymore … You got to stop this horrible invasion that's happening.' — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) July 25, 2025 Trump also used the moment to highlight his hardline immigration stance in the United States, boasting about recent enforcement at the southern border. 'As you know, last month, we had nobody entering our country. We took out a lot of bad people that got there,' he said. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has reintroduced aggressive immigration policies, including mass deportations and increased detentions. He has promised to launch the largest migrant deportation programme in US history, a plan that has drawn widespread criticism and sparked nationwide protests. The United Nations estimated in 2020 that Europe was home to roughly 87 million international migrants. Trump's comments came during a visit to Scotland, where he is expected to spend the weekend at his Turnberry golf resort before heading to Aberdeen to open a second golf course named in honour of his mother. He said he would meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during his European trip. According to Trump, the meeting with Starmer would be more of a celebration of an existing trade agreement. 'It's a great deal for both,' he said. Trump is also expected to meet Scottish First Minister John Swinney, who had endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris during the 2024 US election.

Fake Ghaziabad embassy: ‘Westarctica diplomat' visited 40 countries, had 12 'diplomatic' passports, says report

Harsh Vardhan Jain, a resident of Kavi Nagar in Ghaziabad who was arrested for allegedly running a fake embassy operating in the city, was reportedly in possession of 12 diplomatic passports and had visited around 40 countries over the past 10 years. Noida unit of UP STF busts an illegal embassy running in Ghaziabad and arrests Harsh Vardhan Jain, who was running an illegal Westarctica embassy by taking a rented house in Kavinagar.(ANI Video Grab) The man was running the 'consulate' while claiming to be a diplomat of non-existent Westarctica. Hindustan Times earlier reported that the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UP-STF) has begun the process to obtain a Blue Corner notice against Harsha Vardhan Jain and applied for his police custody remand, aiming to investigate his overseas activities and financial links. The move comes after investigators said they uncovered evidence that suggests alleged financial transactions totaling ₹20 crore from Turkish national Syed Ehsan Ali to Jain between 2002 and 2004, along with an expanded list of Jain's bank accounts — now totalling 12 in India and eight abroad — five in Dubai, two in London, and one in Mauritius. The Indian Express, citing investigations, reported that Jain had visited countries like the UK, UAE, Mauritius, Turkey, France, Italy, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Switzerland, Poland, Sri Lanka, and Belgium. Luxury cars cars bearing fake diplomatic number plates are parked outside a rented residential building in which a bogus embassy was running in Ghaziabad, outskirts of New Delhi,(AP) According to the STF's Noida unit, investigations suggest that Jain was engaged in brokering deals by falsely promising job placements for companies and individuals in foreign countries. 'During the investigation, it was revealed that Jain was frequently visiting several Gulf and European countries to liaise and manage the operations of his shell companies,' the newspapers quoted an unnamed source as saying. 'In some of these companies, he listed himself as the secretary, while in others he projected himself as the director. He has visited around 40 countries, including more than 30 trips to the UAE alone in the past 10 years,' the source said, adding that the cops have recovered diplomatic passports of 12 countries as well. Jain, 47, was arrested for allegedly operating a fake consulate from his rented residence while claiming diplomatic status from unrecognised micronations such as Westarctica, Seborga, Ladonia, and the fictional state of Paulovia. He is currently in judicial custody, and a case has been registered at Kavi Nagar police station under sections 318(4) (cheating), 336(3) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security), and 340(2) (forged documents or electronic records) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

unknown gunmen kill people, wound 20 in attack on court building in southeast iran

Unknown attackers launched a gun and grenade attack on a court building in southeast Iran Saturday (July 26, 2025), killing six people, including a child and wounding 20, state TV reported. The report said security forces killed three of the gunmen in the armed clash in the country's restive southern province of Sistan and Baluchestan. It did not identify any of the victims. State TV said the attack happened in the province's capital city of Zahedan. Police and security forces immediately took control of the site, 1,130 kilometres or 700 miles southeast of the capital, Tehran. A report by the semiofficial Tasnim news agency, believed to be close to security forces, blamed the attack on the militant group Jaish al-Adl, which wants independence for Iran's eastern Sistan and Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan provinces. The province, bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been the site of occasional deadly clashes involving militant groups, armed drug smugglers and Iranian security forces. In October, an attack on an Iranian police convoy in the province killed at least 10 officers. Sistan and Baluchistan province is one of the least developed parts of Iran. Relations between the predominantly Sunni Muslim residents of the region and Iran's Shiite theocracy have long been strained.
