DC hints at fresh orders for PU polls if needed

Time of India20 hours ago
Chandigarh: Outsiders and unlawful elements trying to disturb peace by assembling at Panjab University campus ahead of student polls could face action under Section 144 already in force in Chandigarh, deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said.
This came hours after SSP Kanwardeep Kaur affirmed that the order was in force in the city during a meeting with PU student leaders and officials.
The deputy commissioner clarified that the provision was not meant to restrict student campaigning for PUCSC elections, but added that the situation would be reassessed and if required, specific orders for the polls would be issued.
Section 144 is already in force in Chandigarh.
It was imposed from July 7 for 60 days, up to and including September 4. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur made this clear during her meeting with university officials and student leaders at the Student Centre on Monday. Dean, student welfare, Prof Amit Chauhan said that when students asked about prohibitory orders, the SSP told them Section 144 was already operational in the city. As a Union Territory and capital of two states, Chandigarh often attracts protesters from Punjab and Haryana, making such an order necessary to deal with volatile situations.

DC Yadav, who imposes Section 144 as the District Magistrate, said the provision could be applied on the PU campus if outsiders or unlawful elements gathered to create trouble, and violations would draw action under Section 188 of the IPC. "We will reassess the situation regarding PU polls and, if needed, pass specific orders. The situation is being closely monitored," he said.
Security has been under scrutiny in recent days.
PU officials said that cricket bats, sticks and a few sharp-edged weapons were recovered during recent police-assisted raids in hostels. Similar articles have been found in vehicles during naka checks on campus. Karan Parmar, a student of Gandhian and Peace Studies, requested that such checks be carried out by PU security staff instead of the police.
The DSW later said the request had been conveyed to the police, adding that if anything objectionable was found, it would be handled by police, while routine checks would be done by PU security.
Prof Chauhan said that students have been told rallies will not be tolerated and two or more cars from the same party will be treated as a rally. Vehicles with party stickers are barred from entering the campus.
In the meeting, Ambedkar Student Association president Gautam Bhoria raised concerns over anonymous social media pages "going below the belt" with defamatory and trolling content aimed at students. The SSP advised them to report such pages to the cyber cell for action.
PU has seen politically charged incidents before. In November last year, when Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann visited the campus, 14 students were booked after a clash with police. A student was killed on campus in March. Confrontations between rival student groups have also led to FIRs recently. With the elections expected in early September, officials say the the current Section 144 order provides a baseline for security, with room for tighter, poll-specific restrictions if outsider-fuelled disturbances threaten campus peace.

DSW instructed that two or more cars of the same party moving together will be treated as a rally, and no vehicle with party stickers will be allowed inside the campus.

Kulgam op being wound up: Officials

SRINAGAR: The 11-day-long anti-terror operation in the forests of south Kashmir's Kulgam district was being wound up, with no contact having been established with terrorists in the past 48 hours, officials said Tuesday. 'There has been no exchange of fire since Saturday,' a senior Army official confirmed. A senior police official said, 'The operation has now entered a low-key, subdued phase. We cannot, however, say that it has been called off entirely.' Top military commanders and police officers had been monitoring the operation. This was one of the longest anti-terror operations in recent years. Two soldiers from the Army's elite counter-insurgency unit — Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, both from Punjab — fell to terrorists' bullets; one local terrorist was shot dead, and 10 security personnel were injured in the operation. The encounter broke out on August 1 in Akhal Khulsan forests when a joint team of security forces was conducting a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence inputs about the presence of three to five ultras in the area. The combing party came under fire, triggering a gunfight in which one local terrorist was killed. The other suspects managed to escape, taking advantage of the thick forests and deep ravines, prompting one of the largest searches in the area, with security forces deploying drones for aerial surveillance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo During the operation, intermittent firing and blasts were heard. The two Armymen were killed in a fierce gunfight on Saturday morning, taking the death toll of security personnel killed in anti-terror operations in J&K this year to 16 — three in Kashmir Valley and 13 in Jammu division, including three casualties due to Pakistani firing during escalated tensions between both countries following Operation Sindoor. After the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, security forces have so far killed 14 terrorists in Kashmir this year, including three top Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives linked to the Pahalgam attack who were shot dead in Srinagar on July 28.

Pakistan welcomes US designation of BLA, Majeed Brigade as terrorist entities

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday hailed the US decision to designate the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its suicide wing, the Majeed Brigade, as Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTOs), a move seen as reinforcing Islamabad's own counterterrorism efforts and signalling renewed security alignment between the two countries. The US state department had announced the designation on Monday, adding the Majeed Brigade as an alias of the BLA and expanding sanctions, travel bans, and legal penalties for supporters. The decision imposes sweeping sanctions and is seen as underscoring a rare moment of US-Pakistan security alignment, arriving just as army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir engages in high-level talks in Washington. Pakistan's foreign office said it outlawed the BLA in 2006 and banned the Majeed Brigade on July 18, 2024. Both have been blamed for 'heinous' acts, including the March 2025 Jaffar Express hijacking, which killed more than 30 people, and the Khuzdar bus bombing, which claimed dozens of civilian lives. The US move came as Munir made his second high-level visit to Washington in two months, sparking speculation over expanded cooperation on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional stability. Security analysts say the designation reflects converging US-Pakistan interests in Balochistan, a province rich in minerals and home to the strategic Gwadar port. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors are going crazy for these comfy, stylish, easy-on shoes Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo The BLA and Majeed Brigade have repeatedly targeted Chinese nationals, infrastructure, and projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in an attempt to derail investment and development. Pakistan has intensified military operations in Balochistan in recent months, killing more than 50 suspected militants linked to BLA splinter groups in Zhob, Kech, and Gwadar. Officials believe US backing will help choke off funding, disrupt safe havens, and counter online propaganda. For Islamabad, the US designation is more than a symbolic victory, it is a strategic opportunity to align international action with domestic priorities in its decades-long battle against insurgency.
