Indian Express28-05-2025

Tirumala's Lord Venkateswara temple is witnessing an extraordinary rush this summer, with 3,28,702 devotees having darshan in just four days, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the temple, has said. On May 25, a record number of 91,538 devotees had darshan in over 18 hours.
On Tuesday, TTD officials and the state forest department scrambled to ensure the safety of devotees who walk up the Alipiri footpath through the forested hills to the temple, after a leopard was spotted along the route.
Officials said that in spite of the scare, devotees did not hesitate, and that adequate arrangements have been made by posting guards to ensure their safety. On Tuesday, TTD executive officer J Syamala Rao held a meeting with the TTD forest department, the state forest department, and others on how to manage leopards straying into the path of pilgrims.
Moreover, in view of the ongoing summer vacation, TTD has made extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth movement and darshan of devotees, its joint executive officer V Veerabrahmam said.
Srivari Seva Volunteers posted at the site are distributing food and beverages to devotees. The arrangements mean an additional 10,000 devotees can have darshan each day as compared to regular days.
Between Thursday and Sunday, when 3,28,702 devotees had darshan of Sri Venkateswara, the Annaprasadam department served 10,98,170 meals and 4,55,160 beverages (tea/coffee/milk/buttermilk) to the devotees. As many as 1,52,587 devotees tonsured their hair, and 12,172 availed medical services provided by the TTD medical department at various locations in Tirumala.
The health department is maintaining a supply of drinking water and cleanliness, with 2,150 sanitary workers, supervisors, inspectors, and unit officers deployed in three shifts.
In view of the upcoming annual Brahmotsavams of Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple, scheduled to be held from June 2 to June 10, TTD executive officer J Syamala Rao instructed officials to make elaborate arrangements, keeping in mind the summer conditions. He emphasised the need for facilities such as shade pandals, whitewashing, and paintings to enhance the temple's festive look.
On Tuesday, in view of the increased movement of wild cats in the area, a review meeting was held at the TTD office. Syamala Rao said it was decided to deploy additional forces.
'More measures are being taken to ensure the Alipiri footpath is a no-leopard zone, which include camera traps, bio-fences, net-guns, high flash torches, and pepper sprays,' an official said.
In August 2023, a six-year-old girl who got separated from her parents while walking along the Alipiri stairs was found dead the next day. Two months earlier, a three-year-old boy was also attacked by a wild animal on the footpath route, but survived the attack.

Bengaluru To Maha Kumbh, List Of Major Stampedes In India Since Last Year

A celebration marking RCB's (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) much-awaited IPL victory after 18 long years took a tragic turn as stampedes broke out outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and Vidhana Souda, with at least 11 people feared dead. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate RCB and witness the felicitation ceremony of the team, held by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). However, the celebration soon turned ghastly. Two people died on the premises of the Vidhana Soudha, where the RCB squad proceeded from the airport to meet with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. At least nine others died outside the stadium. In the last year, India has seen at least six major stampedes, taking hundreds of lives. Here is a list: New Delhi Railway Station, February 2025 At least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, died in a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15. The passengers were waiting to board trains for Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh Mela was held. The incident took place on foot-overbridges connecting platforms 14 and 15, when some passengers slipped while descending, causing panic and a deadly crush. However, according to some sources, delays in train departures and the sale of 1,500 general tickets every hour may have created a chaotic situation at the station; others indicated that wrong announcements about a change of platforms may have created confusion that led to the stampede, PTI reported. Maha Kumbh, January 2025 At least 30 people were killed, and 60 others were injured in a stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. In the early hours of January 29, ahead of the 'Amrit Snan', a large number of pilgrims turned up for a holy bath on the auspicious occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya', which led to a stampede. Goa Temple, May 2025 At least six people were killed and over 50 injured after a stampede broke out during the annual Lairai Devi jatra (procession) in Shirgaon, North Goa. The incident occurred at the revered Sree Devi Lairai temple, about 40 km from the state capital Panaji, amid a large crowd of devotees who had gathered for the annual festival. Overcrowding and insufficient security management reportedly triggered the chaos, causing a stampede. Tirupati Temple, January 2025 Six people died in a stampede at Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati temple during the distribution of tokens. The incident occurred on January 8 at the Vishnu Niwasam at Tirupati during the distribution of tokens for Vaikuntha Dwara Sarvadarshanam - a special 'darshan' for devotees. Darshan tokens for the 10-day festival were to be handed out from 5 am on January 9. However, thousands of people gathered the night before at counters set up by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which oversees temple operations. The crowd reportedly thronged the ticket counters and became unruly. According to BR Naidu, chairman of TTD, when a gate was opened to assist a woman feeling unwell, the crowd surged forward all at once, leading to chaos. Sandhya Theatre, December 2024 On December 4, the premiere of ' Pushpa 2: The Rule ' at Sandhya theatre in Hyderabad turned ghastly as a massive crowd thronged the venue to catch a glimpse of the film's lead actor, Allu Arjun. According to police, the theatre's main gate collapsed under the pressure of the crowd. The police resorted to lathi charge to control the mob, but the stampede turned fatal, killing a 35-year-old woman and injuring her nine-year-old son. The little boy died in the hospital. Hathras Satsang, July 2024 In Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, a gathering of people at the satsang of Narayan Sakar Hari, popularly called 'Bhole Baba', turned chaotic, leading to the death of 121 people. The organisers of the satsang reportedly sought permission for a gathering of 80,000 people. However, over 2.5 lakh people turned up.

TTD Announces Temporary Shift of Divya Darshan Token Counters

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has announced a significant change for devotees seeking the Tirumala Venkanna Darshan. In a recent decision, TTD will temporarily relocate the Divya Darshan token issuance counters from Srivarimettu to the Bhudevi Complex in Alipiri. This new arrangement will take effect from Friday evening. TTD Executive Officer, Sri J. Shyamala Rao, conducted a virtual review meeting with TTD officials on Tuesday evening to discuss the changes. Traditionally, Divya Darshan tokens for pilgrims undertaking the Srivari Mettu route on foot have been issued at Srivarimettu. However, under the new directive, dedicated counters at the Alipiri Bhudevi Complex will handle token distribution for these devotees. The issuance process will begin on Friday evening, 6th of the month, and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability. Devotees are required to present their Aadhaar identification to obtain the Divya Darshan tokens, which will then need to be scanned at the 1200th step of Srivari Mettu. Tokens issued on Friday evening will be valid for the following day's darshan. Additionally, the TTD has confirmed that Special Darshan (SSD) tokens will also be available at the Alipiri Bhudevi Complex counters. In light of the expected influx of devotees, the Executive Officer has instructed TTD Vigilance, Security, and local District Police to coordinate measures to ensure safety and manage traffic effectively. A team of officers will be designated to oversee the smooth token issuance process at the new location, ensuring a hassle-free environment for all devotees. To facilitate the transition, TTD will actively publicise the temporary shift of the token counters. Engineering officers have been tasked with creating efficient queue lines for the convenience of pilgrims, while department heads have been urged to maintain high standards of food offerings and cleanliness. The services of Srivari Sevakula volunteers will also be leveraged to assist during this period.
