Bengaluru To Maha Kumbh, List Of Major Stampedes In India Since Last Year
Thousands of people gathered to celebrate RCB and witness the felicitation ceremony of the team, held by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). However, the celebration soon turned ghastly.
Two people died on the premises of the Vidhana Soudha, where the RCB squad proceeded from the airport to meet with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. At least nine others died outside the stadium.
In the last year, India has seen at least six major stampedes, taking hundreds of lives. Here is a list:
New Delhi Railway Station, February 2025
At least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, died in a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15. The passengers were waiting to board trains for Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh Mela was held.
The incident took place on foot-overbridges connecting platforms 14 and 15, when some passengers slipped while descending, causing panic and a deadly crush.
However, according to some sources, delays in train departures and the sale of 1,500 general tickets every hour may have created a chaotic situation at the station; others indicated that wrong announcements about a change of platforms may have created confusion that led to the stampede, PTI reported.
Maha Kumbh, January 2025
At least 30 people were killed, and 60 others were injured in a stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. In the early hours of January 29, ahead of the 'Amrit Snan', a large number of pilgrims turned up for a holy bath on the auspicious occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya', which led to a stampede.
Goa Temple, May 2025
At least six people were killed and over 50 injured after a stampede broke out during the annual Lairai Devi jatra (procession) in Shirgaon, North Goa. The incident occurred at the revered Sree Devi Lairai temple, about 40 km from the state capital Panaji, amid a large crowd of devotees who had gathered for the annual festival.
Overcrowding and insufficient security management reportedly triggered the chaos, causing a stampede.
Tirupati Temple, January 2025
Six people died in a stampede at Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati temple during the distribution of tokens. The incident occurred on January 8 at the Vishnu Niwasam at Tirupati during the distribution of tokens for Vaikuntha Dwara Sarvadarshanam - a special 'darshan' for devotees.
Darshan tokens for the 10-day festival were to be handed out from 5 am on January 9. However, thousands of people gathered the night before at counters set up by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which oversees temple operations.
The crowd reportedly thronged the ticket counters and became unruly. According to BR Naidu, chairman of TTD, when a gate was opened to assist a woman feeling unwell, the crowd surged forward all at once, leading to chaos.
Sandhya Theatre, December 2024
On December 4, the premiere of ' Pushpa 2: The Rule ' at Sandhya theatre in Hyderabad turned ghastly as a massive crowd thronged the venue to catch a glimpse of the film's lead actor, Allu Arjun. According to police, the theatre's main gate collapsed under the pressure of the crowd.
The police resorted to lathi charge to control the mob, but the stampede turned fatal, killing a 35-year-old woman and injuring her nine-year-old son. The little boy died in the hospital.
Hathras Satsang, July 2024
In Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, a gathering of people at the satsang of Narayan Sakar Hari, popularly called 'Bhole Baba', turned chaotic, leading to the death of 121 people. The organisers of the satsang reportedly sought permission for a gathering of 80,000 people. However, over 2.5 lakh people turned up.

Also, more than 300 members were on the stage, though the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had issued an order confining the number of dignitaries to a maximum of 30, he said. He alleged that Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh and the then DPAR Secretary G. Satyavathi (now retired) had ignored the information provided by DCP-rank officer Karibasavanna Gowda on the shortage of police personnel to control the crowd. Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium will no longer host any matches of the upcoming 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, according to a report. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has come under the scanner ever since a stampede killed 11 fans and injured scores of others, who had thronged the areas near the stadium to take part in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title celebration. Last week, the cabinet approved Justice John Michael D'Cunha's Commission verdict, which deemed the iconic venue "unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering". According to a report by India Today, the state government has refused to give clearance to the venue, citing serious safety concerns flagged by the court hearing last week. "Sources in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) confirmed that fixtures originally planned in the city, including the opening ceremony, will now be shifted to other venues. The decision follows the cabinet's approval of Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission's findings, which deemed the stadium "fundamentally unsafe" for large-scale events," the report said. The Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to host the opening game and the final of the ICC Women's World Cup later this year, as well as the opening ceremony. The report also revealed that the KSCA has expressed its disappointment over the verdict, highlighting the stadium's record of successfully hosting over 750 matches and nearly 15 IPL seasons without incident. "Even our request to host matches without spectators was turned down," the report quoted a KSCA official as saying. This also comes after the venue was denied permission to host the KSCA Maharaj T20 Trophy. The fourth edition of the tournament was scheduled to be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium from August 11 to 28, but the failure to obtain a clearance certificate from the city police forced the association to shift the matches to the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Cricket Stadium in Mysuru.

Madras HC orders trial in MS Dhoni's ₹100 crore defamation case
Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to record his statement following the Madras High Court ordered a trial in a ₹ 100 crore defamation case filed by him against two prominent media channels, an IPS officer and a journalist, who dragged his name in the 2013 IPL betting scandal, reported The Hindu. The report added that Justice CV Karthikeyan has appointed an advocate commissioner who will record the evidence on behalf of Dhoni. This decision is based on the fact that MS Dhoni is a celebrity, and his presence could lead to chaos. Earlier in 2014, Dhoni filed a case and sought damages of ₹ 100 crore from the defendants – two prominent media channels, an IPS officer and a journalist. Dhoni had alleged that defamatory remarks were made against him during a Television debate on the IPL betting scandal. Senior counsel PR Raman submitted an affidavit from Dhoni seeking the start of the trial, reported The Hindu, adding it is pending for a decade. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence," The Hindu quoted the affidavit as reading. The betting scandal of 2013 in the Indian Premier League is considered to be a major blot in the T20 league's history. In the scandal, three cricketers were found guilty of having indulged in spot fixing while two franchises – Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals – were suspended for two years.
