Farmers happy with deepened irrigation tank, desilted supply channels
Deepening of Periyakanmoi irrigation tank and desilting its supply channels after removing encroachments through an integrated development action plan has resulted in increased cultivation of paddy in A. Thottiyankulam in Kariyapatti block. 'The tank had significantly lost its water holding capacity due to silt up and also because of wild growth and encroachments blocking free flow of water into the tank,' said a local farmer M. Krishnan, 69. The farmers are thankful to the initiative of Madurai-based NGO, DHAN foundation which implemented different sustainable development goals in five villages of the block including Chithanendal, Thenur, Sooranoor and S. Maraikulam. 'Encroachments reduced the wide supply channel to just 7 metres. With the help of revenue officials, we were able to remove the encroachments and restore the width to 17 metres,' said R. Sakthivel, 55, who is the leader of Grama Seva committee formed under the programme. The farmers had in the past bought water from a borewell sunk by a private individual were able to save paddy crops on some 25 acres. 'To our surprise, we found that the borewell with abundant yield has been sunk on the encroached portion of one of the supply channels. We plan to use the same borewell to augment the water for common irrigation purpose,' said an elderly farmer, M. Durairaj, 71. Periyakanmoi has some residual water even months after rains which helps few hundred cattle heads of the village. 'This was possible only because of the deepening of the tank, strengthening of its bund and clearing bushes from it besides desilting the supply channels,' Mr. Sakthivel said. With the monsoon often failing, the farmers had left the rain-fed ayacuts uncultivated for years. 'Increased storage has encouraged farmers to bring some 40 acres back to cultivation,' he added. The Chinnakanmoi is also new free of wild growth. 'It is now getting water which recharges our borewells. Besides, the vacant land on it got scores of saplings plant with good fencing. In due course, it would start yielding fruits like tamarind and jamoon,' Mr. Krishnan said. DHAN Foundation senior team leader, B. Prahalathan, said that as an additional income generation, the self-help groups for women were given loan of up to ₹10,000 for buying goats. 'Everyone has repaid and the revolving fund has now gone to another SHG,' he added. The number of goats have increased and people sell them for their domestic needs. The committee has restored a dilapidated school building which is now used as the office for them. An e-seva kendra run in the building helps people get certificates without having to travel 20 km to reach Kariyapatti for the same. The building also has a small flour mill which helps people to get flour out of rice and millets. To help the people eat healthy, they have been encouraged to turn to millets which is sold at a nominal price. Besides, the building doubles up as a tuition centre where local children are given evening coaching by two teachers. 'The tuition is free for students and the committee pays them their salary,' Mr. Sakthivel said. Similarly, a weeder and a tiller have been donated for the farmers of the cluster to use them at a nominal rent. The farmers have produced some 800 kg of organic manure in a renovated vermi-compost unit. The youths have got a fitness centre with minimum equipment. The defunct toilets have been renovated and water supply has been ensured. Trained villagers from the cluster also assemble LED bulbs at the office which is then sold at a nominal price to the villagers. These bulbs helps them save on electricity bills. The farmers say that hand-holding by DHAN foundation and funding by SBI Foundation has brought visible changes in the village.
