QIB Group CEO named MENA Islamic Banker of The Year By MEED
Doha, Qatar – Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Qatar's leading digital bank, has been awarded the Best Bank for Cross-Border Transactions while its Group CEO Mr. Bassel Gamal was named MENA Islamic Banker of the Year, at the MEED MENA Banking Excellence, Corporate & Investment Awards 2025. Mashaal Abdulaziz Al Derham, Assistant General Manager, Head of Corporate Communications & Quality Assurance at QIB, received the awards at the ceremony held in Dubai recently.
The MENA Islamic Banker of the Year award was presented to QIB Group CEO, Mr. Bassel Gamal, in recognition of his strategic leadership and long-term contribution to Islamic banking. Under his direction, QIB has delivered consistent financial growth, operational excellence, digital innovation and financial inclusion reinforcing its position as Qatar's largest Islamic bank.
QIB was named Best Bank for Cross-Border Transactions for its role in facilitating secure and seamless international financial flows for individuals, SMEs, and corporates. Through its Direct Remit Service, customers can send money 24/7 in real time to eight key markets, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the UK, benefiting from competitive rates and full transaction visibility. Accessible via the QIB Mobile App, the service supports wallet-to-wallet and UPI transfers, offering convenience and speed. Strengthened by a global network of correspondent banks and strong trade finance capabilities, QIB continues to lead in Shari'a-compliant cross-border banking.

Debenhams moving online in UAE? British store closes doors in Dubai Mall, Mirdif City Centre
Debenhams has closed its doors in two major destinations, Dubai Mall and Mirdiff City Centre. Days before the stores shut down, Debenhams Middle East took to Instagram to alert customers of last-minute sales as it called on shoppers to enjoy "amazing prices" and "buy 1 get 2 free offers" during its last days. On June 12, the British department store closed its doors in Dubai Mall, and on June 22 in Mirdif City Centre. However, residents need not be disappointed as the store may be moving online! A 'Debenhams UAE' online store will be launched "soon", although the exact date has not been revealed so far. So far, the Debenhams brand has offline department stores exclusively in the Mena region, operated by Alshaya Group with a licence from Boohoo Group plc. In other parts of the world, Debenhams ceased to operate its physical stores in 2021. In 2021, Boohoo acquired Debenhams, shutting down all its brick-and-mortar stores, and converting it to an online-only brand. However, it continued to honour its agreement with Alshaya, which operates Debenhams in locations across Mena. Boohoo has since then rebranded to Debenhams Group, aiming to use the success of the venture as a standard format for the wider group. At the time of writing this report, it is unclear if Debenhams will face a similar fate of digital retail in the UAE. Khaleej Times has reached out to Debenhams Middle East for comment.

Thales and Qatar Airways sign agreement regarding the latest IFE Technologies and dedicated local Service Hub
Thales, a global technology leader in the defence, aerospace, cybersecurity and digital solutions markets, and Qatar Airways, a multiple award-winning airline recently voted the 'World's Best Airline' by Skytrax in 2025, have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to support Qatar Airways' strategic fleet growth plan announced last month. This agreement sets the course for future inflight entertainment (IFE) innovations to support Qatar Airways' digital transformation journey, giving the airline access to the most innovative technologies. In addition, this MoA covers the opportunities for development of a dedicated IFE service and maintenance center based in Doha, Qatar. The mission of this local Thales facility is to provide rapid access to services such as repair, spare distribution, technical assistance and turnkey maintenance for the full range of Thales IFE products on Qatar's growing new fleet. The state-of-the-art facility will be designed to ensure the highest standards of operational efficiency. The purpose of this MoA is to support Qatar Airways' growth and the expansion of its new fleet. It builds on a strong and long-standing relationship between the two companies.
