Shubman Gill goes past Kohli, posts highest Test score as India skipper
Highest score by an Indian skipper in Test cricket
Rank Player Score Opponent Venue Year
1 Shubman Gill 269 England Birmingham 2025
2 Virat Kohli 254* South Africa Pune 2019
3 Virat Kohli 243 Sri Lanka Delhi 2017
4 Virat Kohli 235 England Mumbai 2017
5 MS Dhoni 224 Australia Chennai 2013
First Indian skipper to breach 200 in England
Before Gill's knock, no Indian captain had ever managed a double hundred in a Test against England on English soil. The previous best belonged to Mohammad Azharuddin, who scored 179 at Old Trafford in 1990. Gill now owns that record, becoming the first Indian skipper to score a double ton in England. His ability to read the conditions early and accelerate post-lunch was hailed as a textbook example of modern Test match batting by the Indian support staff.
Elite company: Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid — and now Gill
Gill's 269 places him in rare air, becoming just the sixth Indian to score 250 or more in a Test innings. He now joins the ranks of legends like Virender Sehwag, who achieved the feat four times, as well as V.V.S. Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Karun Nair, and Kohli. However, unlike his predecessors, Gill's knock came outside the Indian subcontinent, making it the highest-ever Test score by an Indian batter overseas — surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 241 at Sydney in 2004.
Dominance in SENA countries: A historic Asian first
Gill also broke ground as the first Asian captain to score a double hundred in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Until now, the highest score in these regions by an Asian captain was Tillakaratne Dilshan's 193 at Lord's in 2011. His performance is now the gold standard for Asian leadership abroad, showing not just flair but also tactical composure under challenging English conditions.

Susan Polgar on Gukesh: ‘Some doubted his worthiness as World Champion… written off as a bottom feeder at Zagreb'
Chess legend Susan Polgar heaped praise on world champion Gukesh after the teenager from India took down world no 1 and five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen in a rapid game at the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia 2025 in Zagreb on Thursday. Gukesh had also defeated Carlsen in their previous encounter at Norway Chess, which was a classical clash, but this time around the win came in a faster-time control format that Gukesh is supposedly not good in. 'I am so happy for Gukesh. Some have doubted his worthiness as a World Champion, and believed that he was just a lucky winner against an off form Ding Liren. I read a lot of criticism from doubters,' Polgar wrote on X after the Indian teenager's victory over Carlsen. Gukesh lost his opening game to Jan-Krzysztof Duda (who was his second in the world chess championship battle against Ding Liren last year). But after that loss, he rebounded spectacularly, taking down five of the best players in the 10-player field at Zagreb, including Carlsen. You can read our analysis of how Gukesh defeated Magnus Carlsen here. Gukesh now heads into the final day of the rapid section with a two-point lead. Carlsen is four points behind him. 'In this tournament in Croatia, he started off with a loss against Duda. He was already written off as a bottom feeder by others. Then he won 5 straight, taking down Firouzja with white, Praggnanandhaa with black, Abdusattorov with black, Caruana with white, and Carlsen with black! No matter what will happen tomorrow, beating those 5 consecutively is a feat very few can ever do. I hope this will give him confidence to rise to another level!' Polgar added. She was not the only one heaping praise on Gukesh after his second defeat of Carlsen. Former world champion Garry Kasparov too was impressed by Gukesh, who he likened to a computer. READ MORE | Garry Kasparov explains why playing Gukesh is 'like playing a computer': Have to beat him 5 times… he has many lives in each game Before the start of the tournament, Carlsen had not just questioned Gukesh's credentials in rapid and blitz. He had gone as far as saying that he would treat the games against Gukesh (one in rapid and two in blitz over the weekend) as ones against one of the 'presumably weaker players in the tournament'. READ MORE | Magnus Carlsen reacts to Gukesh defeat: 'Poor from me, got soundly punished… but all credit to Gukesh' As Carlsen had explained, 'Gukesh hasn't done anything to indicate that he's going to do well (in rapid and blitz). It remains to be proven that he's one of the best players in such a format. This is a very, very strong field that we have here. Players like Gukesh have a lot to prove. In the course of 27 rounds, things usually show. I hope for Gukesh's sake that he can play better.' But after the defeat to Gukesh, Carlsen was forced to admit: 'Gukesh is doing incredible well (at this tournament). It's a long way to go in the tournament but winning five games in a row is no mean feat.'

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Did Ravindra Jadeja ever consider leading India in Test cricket? The all-rounder responds with a joke!
India all-rounder delivered an impressive performance with the bat on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, scoring 89 runs from 137 balls. When asked about his captaincy aspirations during his 15-year career spanning three tours of England, Jadeja responded with humour. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "No, that time is gone now," Jadeja told reporters after the day's play. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Jadeja and captain formed a crucial 203-run partnership that helped India build a commanding position in the match. Jadeja's innings came to an end when he attempted to pull a short-length delivery from Josh Tongue, resulting in a gloved catch to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Supreme confidence, record feat: Shubman Gill's double ton impresses Ravindra Jadeja Following Jadeja's dismissal, Gill continued his impressive form by establishing a 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar, putting further pressure on the tired English bowling attack. Joe Root dismissed Sundar for 42 runs off 103 balls, while Gill's magnificent innings of 269 helped India post a formidable total of 587 runs. England's response started poorly as Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj struck early, dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks, followed by Zak Crawley for 19 runs. Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied England's innings with an unbeaten 52-run partnership, taking the score to 77/3 at stumps. "We are not thinking too far ahead. We will have to take 2-3 wickets before lunch tomorrow. If we do that, then we will definitely be ahead in the game. Results can be anything. There have been big partnerships in cricket in the past. We will not take the game too lightly. We were playing with energy today. Hopefully, we will get a good result in India's favour," Jadeja said, outlining India's strategy for Day 3.

Sanju Samson To CSK Rumours Decoded: "Rajasthan Royals Might Want Either Ravindra Jadeja Or..."
Former India opener Aakash Chopra has addressed the reports of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) seeking a trade of Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals (RR). According to a report in Cricbuzz, RR captain Samson has attracted trade interests from multiple IPL franchises, including five-time champions CSK. "We are definitely looking at Sanju. He is an Indian batter, who is a keeper and an opener. So if he is available, we will certainly have a look at the option of having him in our fold. Who we will trade him with we have not taken that call because the matter has not gone that far. But yes, in principle, we are interested," the report quoted a CSK official, involved in the decision-making process, as saying on condition of anonymity. However, neither the player nor the franchises confirmed or even hinted on the affirmative regarding the rumours. Now, Chopra has claimed that even if the talks with CSK materialise, RR might ask for a veteran player in exchange. Chopra hinted that either Ravindra Jadeja or Ravichandran Ashwin might go the other way if the two franchise crack a trade deal. "Will this trade happen? CSK have expressed interest, but they haven't reached the stage of talks where potential trade names have been discussed. Rajasthan may want either Ashwin or Jadeja in return. It's well within their rights to ask, if the trade ever progresses that far," Chopra said on his YouTube channel. Chopra also explained why CSK going after Samson actually makes sense. "A CSK official has said they are interested and keen. They feel it would be great to have Samson because he's a keeper-batter, and they need to plan beyond MS Dhoni. So he could be a very good option," he highlighted. It is not yet known if the player trade, if it happens, will involve another big player or it will be all-cash deal. Samson has been part of the Royals since 2018. He was named the captain of the side in 2021. Sanju Samson is the only player to have scored more than fifty runs in the first match of a season, for six consecutive seasons playing for Rajasthan Royals.
