Robert MacIntyre blows four-shot lead as Scottie Scheffler wins BMW Championship
MacIntyre's big overnight advantage was whittled to a single stroke after he started Sunday with two bogeys, and despite a gallant effort he could do nothing to quell the American's mounting momentum.
Back within touching distance with two to play, MacIntyre watched as Scheffler nailed a remarkable chip from the rough to effectively confirm his victory on the penultimate hole.
It was hard to take for MacIntyre, who had produced his own memorable moment on the final hole on Saturday when he sunk a 41-foot putt to retain his significant advantage.
Seeking the win that would have sealed his place in Europe's Ryder Cup team, MacIntyre made a nightmare start on Sunday but Scheffler too was far from perfect, a missed putt restoring the Scot's two-stroke lead after three.
The American hauled level on five after MacIntyre found a bunker on his approach shot, and Scheffler looked to be in irresistible form as he moved two clear on the 13th.
MacIntyre reduced the deficit again but the 15th proved pivotal as the Oban man failed to capitalise on Scheffler finding a bunker with approach shot, a missed birdie putt handing the momentum back to the American.
After Scheffler's uproarious response on the 17th, MacIntyre failed to respond with more final hole magic and putted out for a three-over-par final round of 73, two shots off Scheffler's 15-under-par total of 265.
"He's hit a great shot," MacIntyre said of Scheffler's pyrotechnics at the 17th. "Nothing you can do with that. I just didn't play good enough.
"I got off to an absolutely horrific start. I just expected jumpers on one and two. One, it's come out dead and then it's got a massive mud ball just short of the green.
"I just felt great going out today. I wasn't even expecting to be over par, to be honest. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days."
A final round of 67 shunted Tommy Fleetwood up to a tie for fourth place behind American Maverick McNealy, but Harry Hall, who started Sunday tied for fourth, fell away with a disappointing 70 to finish in sixth place.
was hampered by back-to-back double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes respectively as he failed to make inroads on the chasing pack, matching Hall's final round of 70 to finish down in a tie for 12th.

Ferry was ranked as one of the standout full-backs in Scotland last season when it came down to the data analytics, while he also holds up well in leagues across Europe. and Hibs sold Lewis Miller to Blackburn for a deal that could net them £1.5million. Ferry is very much at that same level and it would take a decent seven figure bid to even get United to the table. Jim Goodwin 's side are also in a good place because Ferry is still under contract for this season and next. The 24-year-old has also been named as United's vice captain and also skippered them through their Conference League campaign. Ferry's form has also not gone unnoticed by Ireland and he is very much on the radar for a full call-up. He has previously been capped at under-21 level but new national coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has had him scouted and he is very much in his thinking. Ferry has been something of a coup since Goodwin signed the wing back from Cheltenham last summer and he was a key figure in their fourth place finish.

Ryan Reynolds showed his true colours with WhatsApp message before meeting new signing
Wrexham new boy Conor Coady has revealed the warm, down-to-earth welcome he received from the club's Hollywood owners, praising their transformative impact on the Welsh side Wrexham's Hollywood owners have shown their kindheartedness after giving a warm welcome to one of their new signings. Former Wolves and Everton defender Conor Coady joined the Welsh side from Leicester for £2million at the start of August. The Red Dragons fought off interest from Scottish giants Rangers to secure the 32-year-old's services. Coady has already established himself as an important figure at the Racecourse Ground, starting in both of their opening Championship fixtures. The England centre-back has now opened up on the friendly greeting he received from club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac before even meeting them. The two actors initially introduced themselves via phone messages before coming face to face with the new team member as they flew in from the US to watch Wrexham 's first home game of the season against West Brom last Saturday. Speaking during an appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live, Coady said: "When I signed, he [Ryan] sent me a video and Rob messaged me. It was amazing just to get a message to say, 'Welcome to the club.' I got a WhatsApp from an American number which I thought was a bit strange. "I sat on the couch with my missus watching it and it was a video of Ryan. I was really starstruck and he was just welcoming me to the club and saying how good it is to have me, what we want to do as a club and how we want to go forward." Coady joked that he was taken aback by Reynolds' height when speaking to him in person. He added: "Meeting him for the first time, he's quite a big fella. I said he can play centre half with me, and he said he's never played football in his life. "He's a really lovely man. What he's done for Wrexham, and what Rob has done for Wrexham, I think it's incredible to see where they're at now." Reynolds and Mac, who recently applied to legally change his surname from McElhenney, have transformed Wrexham's fortunes since buying them in February 2021. The club has achieved promotion in each of the last three seasons, most recently in April taking them from the National League into the Championship under manager Phil Parkinson. While the owners insist on leaving football matters to the playing staff, they have received a large amount of praise for their approach to running the club. And Coady believes the A-listers' humility is key to Wrexham's success. "I think what goes under the radar a bit is the trust they've put in people," he said. "They give so much trust to the people at the top end of our club, which I think has been absolutely fantastic over the years. That's a big reason why the club is where they're at today, because they give so much trust in the gaffer. "I saw them do an interview the other day, and they said, 'We don't get involved with the football.' I thought the interview was outstanding. They said, 'We tell a story about the club,' and I love that, because they're getting the story of Wrexham out there. "It's an amazing story so why not tell that story? And what better people to tell the story of Wrexham than Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds?" Wrexham have so far failed to register any points in their first Championship campaign in 43 years. They started the season with a 2-1 defeat away at Southampton, followed by last weekend's 3-2 loss at home to West Brom. Parkinson's side next face crisis club Sheffield Wednesday at the Racecourse on Saturday as they look to establish themselves in the second tier.
