Zohran Mamdani at risk of losing US citizenship? Shocking twist as New York's mayoral race heats up

Time of India26-06-2025
Zohran Mamdani
, the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan author of Indian ancestry, was declared victorious in the Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night. In a stunning victory, Mamdani defeated former governor
Andrew Cuomo
in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor.
But President Trump and MAGA are not happy with Mamdani's victory with the commander-in-chief calling him a "100% communist lunatic".
MAGA Republicans
have taken it to next level as they have called for the deportation of New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
The White House has framed the upset victory by Mamdani who could become New York City's first Muslim and Indian American mayor, as evidence of uncontrolled migration.

Responding to the results, the NYYRC wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "A CALL TO ACTION FROM THE NYYRC"
The
New York Young Republican Club
, or NYYRC, took to X, begging Trump immigration advisers Stephen Miller and Tom Homan to revoke Mamdani's US citizenship and deport him.
'The radical Zohran Mamdani cannot be allowed to destroy our beloved city of New York,' the NYYRC's post states. 'The Communist Control Act lets President Trump revoke @ZohranKMamdani's citizenship and promptly deport him. The time for action is now—@StephenM and @RealTomHoman, New York is counting on you.'
— NYYRC (@NYYRC)
In the replies, the X account for the Republicans for National Renewal tweeted, 'We fully support this initiative. Communist radical Zohran Mamdani should be remigrated as soon as possible,' and the John Birch Society approvingly posted a '100' emoji.

The message was reposted by the accounts of numerous conservative figures, including Gavin Wax, who was formerly the NYYRC president as well as the chief of staff for recently departed Federal Communications Commissioner Nathan Simington, who has recommended Wax as his successor.
Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff and homeland security adviser, tore into Zohran Mamdani and attributed the expected outcome of the primary to 'unchecked migration.'
'The commentary about NYC Democrats nominating an anarchist-socialist for Mayor omits one point: how unchecked migration fundamentally remade the NYC electorate. Democrats change politics by changing voters. That's how you turn a city that defined US dominance into what it is now,' Miller said in a post on the social platform X early Wednesday.
'To understand the pace and scope of migration to America in past years, one-third of NYC is foreign-born and almost two-thirds of NYC children live in a foreign-born household,' he added in another post.
'NYC is the clearest warning yet of what happens to a society when it fails to control migration,' Miller said in another post, which generated some pushback among more liberal X users.

On Wednesday, President Trump hit out at Mamdani, currently a New York State Assemblyman, branding him "a 100% Communist Lunatic" on his Truth Social website.
"It's finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous," Trump wrote. "He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" he added.
Mamdani was born in Uganda in October 1991. His family moved to New York City when he was 7 years old in 1998. Mamdani was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2018.

The Indian and Vietnamese Coast Guards held their sixth high-level meeting in Hanoi on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) under the framework of the 2015 Memorandum of Understanding on Coast Guard Cooperation. According to the Ministry of Defence, the talks focused on strengthening collaboration in maritime search and rescue, law enforcement, marine pollution response, and capacity building. Both sides placed particular emphasis on tackling transnational maritime crimes, including smuggling, trafficking, and illegal fishing. The meeting was co-chaired by the Coast Guard's Additional Director General Anand Prakash Badola and Vietnamese Coast Guard Vice Commandant Major General Vu Trung Kien. The delegations reviewed recent ship visits and professional exchanges, and agreed to pursue joint initiatives aimed at enhancing interoperability. They also highlighted the importance of coordinated search and rescue operations and joint pollution response mechanisms to safeguard maritime safety and protect the marine environment. Reaffirming their commitment to regular institutional interactions, training programmes, exchange of best practices, and ship visits, both Coast Guards stressed that such engagements foster mutual trust and operational synergy. ‘Reddy a fearless champion of equality': Mallikarjun Kharge introduces V-P candidate to Opp leaders

Calling upon every MP to support former SC judge B Sudershan Reddy for the Vice President's post, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said his nomination stood as the Opposition's firm commitment to restoring steadily declining 'fairness, impartiality, and dignity to the functioning of the Rajya Sabha'. Reddy, who will be the joint Opposition candidate, was formally introduced to senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar among others, at a meeting in the Central Hall of Parliament on Wednesday. At a time when the integrity of India's democratic institutions was 'facing unprecedented challenges', Kharge said Justice Reddy's contest against NDA's C P Radhakrishnan was 'an ideological battle for the soul of our nation'. 'This Vice-Presidential election is not merely a contest for an office; it is an ideological battle for the soul of our nation. While the ruling party has chosen the ideology of RSS, we uphold the Constitution and its values as our guiding light,' he said on the eve of the last day of filing nominations for the polls scheduled on September 9. Terming him a 'towering figure in Indian jurisprudence', Justice Reddy, Kharge said, was 'renowned for his unwavering commitment to justice' and had been a fearless champion of social, economic, and political equality, delivering landmark judgments that have 'strengthened the fabric of our democracy'. Referring to the three Bills introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament on Wednesday, he said, 'Constitutional Amendment Bills that undermine the core values of parliamentary democracy and federalism are being introduced in subterfuge at the fag end of the session, leaving no scope for meaningful debate or scrutiny.' 'Over the last 11 years, we have witnessed the blatant misuse of parliamentary majority to arm the autonomous agencies like ED, I-T, and CBI with draconian powers to target Opposition leaders. Now, these new Bills are set to become instruments in the hands of the ruling party to further undermine and destabilise democratically elected governments in the states,' he added.

‘Misplaced': India rejects Bangladesh's allegations of Awami League ‘activities' in Delhi, Kolkata

India on Wednesday dismissed allegations by Bangladesh that Awami League-linked offices in Kolkata and New Delhi were involved in 'anti-Bangladesh activities.' The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called Dhaka's charge 'misplaced,' stressing that no such activity is permitted from Indian soil and reiterating its support for 'free, fair and inclusive' elections in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi foreign ministry, in a statement earlier today claimed that 'Awami League-linked offices' were being run in India, allegedly by leaders and activists taking refuge across the border. Dhaka called on New Delhi to 'immediately ensure the closure' of alleged Awami League-linked centres, warning they amounted to 'an affront against the people and State of Bangladesh.' In a post on X, the Bangladesh foreign ministry wrote, 'Activities by the banned BANGLADESH AWAMI LEAGUE on Indian soil risks long-term friendship and multifarious engagements between Bangladesh & India as also mutual trust and respect between two people.' According to Dhaka, 'absconding members of a banned political party' were conducting campaigns in India that undermined Bangladesh's interests, with purported offices said to be operating in Kolkata and New Delhi. Activities by the banned BANGLADESH AWAMI LEAGUE on Indian soil risks long-term friendship and multifarious engagements between #Bangladesh & #India as also mutual trust and respect between two (🇧🇩-🇮🇳) #people. — Ministry of Foreign Affairs (@BDMOFA) August 20, 2025 'Any form of political activity campaigning against the interests of Bangladesh by Bangladeshi nationals, particularly by the absconding leaders/activists of a banned political party, staying on Indian soil, legally or illegally, including the establishment of offices, is an unambiguous affront against the people and State of Bangladesh,' the statement read. 'This development also risks upholding the good-neighbourly relations with India driven by mutual trust and mutual respect, and lends serious implications for the political transformation underway in Bangladesh,' the statement mentioned, adding that the issue 'might also trigger public sentiment in Bangladesh, which may in turn impact the ongoing efforts of the two countries in further enhancing the relationship between the two closest neighbours.' 'The government of Bangladesh, therefore, would urge the government of India to take immediate steps to ensure that no anti-Bangladesh activity is undertaken by any Bangladeshi national from being in the Indian soil…,' the statement added. India has rejected Dhaka's accusations, saying it had no knowledge of such activities and would not allow them under any circumstances. 'The Government of India is not aware of any anti-Bangladesh activities by purported members of the Awami League in India or of any action that is contrary to Indian law. The Government does not allow political activities against other countries to be carried out from Indian soil,' the MEA said. Calling the charge 'misplaced,' New Delhi reiterated its position on Bangladesh's political future, saying that 'free, fair and inclusive elections will be held at the earliest in Bangladesh to ascertain the will and mandate of the people.' Our response to media queries on the Press Statement issued by the Interim Government of Bangladesh⬇️ 🔗 — Randhir Jaiswal (@MEAIndia) August 20, 2025 The Awami League, led by former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has come under mounting pressure since last year's student-led protests. Amid intensifying unrest and accusations of authoritarian rule, Hasina stepped down and has since been living in exile in India. Hasina and her party have rejected the charges against them as politically motivated, calling them part of a larger campaign by rivals and Islamist forces to erase her influence from Bangladesh's political landscape.
