Tambaram police launch counselling centre for vulnerable children
This centre functions from the Block No 30 of Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board(TNUHDB), in Perumbakkam. The centre's primary objective is to provide psychological and emotional support to the affected children and their families are treated in a safe and respectful manner.
'Perumabakkam Experiment' initiative by Tambaram City Police Commissioner Abin Dinesh Modak focuses on crime reduction and providing better livelihood to the people who are living in resettlement tenements.
Mr. Modak said this counselling centre works in close coordination with the District Child Welfare Committee(CWC), the district unit of Social Welfare Department and non-government organisations. It aims to offer a stress free environment and a child friendly approach for the children.
A senior police officer explained the purpose of setting up a such centre said, 'We have been seeing the incidents of children are being affected by different kinds of abuse such as sexual or drug in resettlement tenements in Kannagi Nagar, Perumbakkam and Semmanchery.'
Assistant Commissioner of Police Vaishnavi said reporting of abuse were initially low, but awareness campaigns have helped children gradually come forward through Child Helpline. 'Now we have a centre with good ambience. Any child with any issue can walk in and children who are connected with cases also will be given counselling. There will be follow-up. Additionally NGOs are taking tuition classes in this area and children may come through them to this centre. It is victim centric counselling centre. We expect crime to reduce in the area due to this initiative.'
Police personnel have been trained in standard operating procedures to support victims seeking counselling or other assistance.
Counselling is provided by a senior counsellor from the department of Social Welfare. Post-trauma support is also extended to parents and guardians to help them cope. The centre maintains a child-friendly environment that ensures privacy and safety. Awareness programmes and counselling are provided against drug abuse and sexual abuse.
Tambaram City Police has called on parents, teachers, NGOs and community leaders to participate in spreading awareness about the centre and to refer children in need of protection and support.
'This new initiative underscores that the strong commitment of police department to ensure justice and protection for affected children,'said Mr. Modak.

Six held for scam involving fake allotment orders
Chennai: Six people, including two couples, have been arrested for cheating over 200 people of 5cr by issuing them fake allotment orders for houses under the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (formerly Slum Clearance Board). Police said the case came to light after Muthulakshmi of Anna Nagar lodged a complaint saying she had paid 3.5lakh for a house. She was issued a fake allotment order bearing forged govt seals and stamps. Muthulakshmi was one of more than 200 victims who approached the accused through mutual contacts over the past few years. The suspects assured the victims that the allotment process would be completed once the housing complex was ready, asserting that govt officials would formally hand over the keys during an official function. The complaint, submitted to the city police commissioner, was forwarded to the Forgery Investigation Wing of the CCB on Feb 7. As an investigation led by assistant commissioner M Gayathri and inspector M Sheejarani confirmed the fraud, police arrested Baranitharan, 46, and his wife Ravathi, 40, of Ayanavaram; Rohini Priya, 49, of Chetpet; and Abdul Nasser, 40, of GKM Colony, Villivakkam on Wednesday. All four were remanded in custody. On Friday, Gajendran, 38, and his wife Chamundeeshwari, 39, of Ambattur, were also arrested for their involvement in the scam. During searches at Gajendran's residence, officers seized forged govt seals, stamps, and other incriminating documents. The couple was remanded in judicial custody the same day. Over 838 kg of seized ganja destroyed in Tambaram
The Tambaram City Police on Thursday (August 7, 2025) destroyed 838.49 kg of seized ganja. The contraband was accumulated from various enforcement operations across Tambaram city. It was incinerated on the premises of a private firm at Thenmelpakkam in Chengalpattu district. Further, a joint raid was conducted with officials from the Food Safety Department, to curb the menace of prohibited tobacco substances near educational institutions across the Tambaram city jurisdiction. With the primary objective of eliminating the illegal sale and distribution of tobacco products, multiple police teams were constituted and deployed to conduct simultaneous raids, said Tambaram City Police Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak in a press release. As a result of this operation, a total of 238 kg of illicit tobacco products were seized and 40 cases were registered under Section 24(1) of COTPA, 2003, at various police stations under the Tambaram City limits. As many as 40 individuals involved in the illegal sale of tobacco were arrested and 40 shops were sealed by the competent authority.

Wife's impotency claim against husband during divorce not defamation: Bombay High Court

The court observed that such a claim is legally relevant and made to protect the woman's interest in a marital dispute, a PTI report S M Modak passed the order on July 17, which was made public on Friday. He dismissed a defamation complaint filed by a man against his estranged wife and her family. The court said that under the Hindu Marriage Act, impotency is a valid ground for divorce, and allegations made in that context are part of the legal process.'This court feels that when litigation between spouses arises in a matrimonial relationship, then the wife is justified in making those allegations to support her interest,' the court said. It added that such allegations 'cannot be held as defamatory.'The man had filed a defamation complaint, arguing that his wife's claims had harmed his reputation. According to him, she made the allegation of impotency not only in her divorce and maintenance pleas but also in a First Information Report (FIR) filed against him and his parents. Since these documents were now part of the public record, he said they caused damage to his woman, along with her father and brother, approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash an earlier order by a sessions court. That order had asked a magistrate's court to begin an inquiry into the man's defamation complaint. In response, the woman told the high court that her husband's impotence was one of the reasons she wanted the marriage Modak ruled that the wife's statements, made during the course of legal proceedings, were 'justified' as she was trying to show that she had suffered cruelty during the marriage.
