‘Datuk' dupes trader out of RM100k in Thai cattle scam
Mazli Hamzah, 37, who has been selling honey for 12 years, said he got to know the man last year during a business networking event.
'In March this year, he called me and asked to meet as he was interested in helping to grow my business, including finding ways to market my product overseas.
'We met frequently after that. Then, he told me about an opportunity to invest in a cattle rearing farm in Thailand. The cows are meant for Hari Raya Haji,' he told reporters yesterday.
Mazli said he was initially sceptical about the venture but the 'Datuk', who is in his 40s, brought him to see someone at Menara Tabung Haji here.
The two men talked about the cattle rearing project and Mazlin eventually became convinced that the business opportunity was a legitimate deal.
'Earlier this month, I handed the businessman more than RM100,000. Everything was done verbally.
'However, he did provide me with receipt after I gave him the money to invest,' he said.
Mazli said his subsequent calls and WhatsApp messages to the 'businessman' went unanswered when he tried to find out about the outcome of his investment.
'I then went to his restaurant in Bandar Dato Onn here and saw him. I called his mobile phone, which he glanced at but he did not answer my call.
'As I walked towards him, he saw me and immediately left his restaurant,' he said.
Mazli added that he had since lodged a police report.
It is learnt that the businessman was fined RM200,000 by a Sessions Court last year for using a fake Datuk title.

Felda communities to boost economy with RM100k village allocation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) has unveiled plans to utilise the government's RM100,000 allocation per village to enhance socio-economic development across settler communities. Key initiatives include tourism projects, SME support, and infrastructure upgrades tailored to local needs. In Selangor, Hassan Mukmin Amat, a second-generation settler, proposed developing recreational attractions like an ATV park to boost tourism. 'Sungai Bernam is already popular among anglers, so we can capitalise on that,' he said. In Terengganu, Mat Zain Mat Uyob plans to purchase a tractor to reduce palm oil transportation costs. 'This will save RM60 per ton and increase settlers' income,' he explained. Kedah's Felda Laka Selatan will expand cabin accommodations due to high demand. Sabahan wins national award for million-ringgit aquaculture success

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): From a humble start-up capital of just RM5,000, Sabah's prominent young entrepreneur and athlete Jonathan Wong has built a thriving aquaculture business with annual revenue surpassing RM1 million in just nine years. In recognition of his achievements, Jonathan was conferred the 'Penternak Ikan Jaya' award by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the award presentation and closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday. He received a trophy and RM20,000 cash prize from Anwar, in the presence of the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup and Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture and Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Jonathan is known for his boldness in innovation, having cultured duckweed as a key ingredient in fish feed, a breakthrough that earned him the Most Outstanding Commercial Collaboration Award in Eskpo Kecemerlangan Reka Cipta (Excocipta) 2024. Jonathan is not only a successful young entrepreneur with a sharp business acumen but also a world-class athlete, having represented Malaysia in international long jump competitions. He has won numerous major awards, including two gold medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix and making it into the Paralympic finals twice, bringing glory to the nation. Wong is also dedicated to nurturing future athletes. He currently serves as the president of the Sabah Para Swimming Association, which under his leadership, achieved an impressive 17 gold, seven silver and three bronze medals at the XXI Sukma Para Games in Sarawak last year.
