Michigan in 'ongoing discussions' to play 2026 home game vs. Western Michigan in Frankfurt, Germany
The school said Friday that it was in "ongoing discussions" to host its season opener against Western Michigan in Germany. The game would be held at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Aug. 29. The soccer stadium hosted two NFL games in November of 2023 when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts beat the New England Patriots.
"We are in advanced discussions to create this first-of-its-kind opportunity for our student-athletes and fans," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement. "The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics and the interest in playing an international game would be unique. This would be a great opportunity to teach 'Go Blue' to a new group of fans in Germany."
The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 5. If it's played in Germany, it will be in Week 0, as the official opening weekend of the 2025 season is a week later than it is in 2024 thanks to the date of Labor Day.
Michigan's likely move to play in Europe comes as college programs are now regularly hosting games on the other side of the Atlantic. The 2025 season kicks off with Kansas State and Iowa State in Dublin. A year ago, Georgia Tech took down Florida State in Dublin in a harbinger of bad things to come for the Seminoles in 2024.
The game between Michigan and Western Michigan would be the second international game of the 2026 season. North Carolina and TCU are playing in Dublin on the same day after the two teams play in Chapel Hill in Week 1 in 2025. That game will be the first of the Bill Belichick era at North Carolina.
The game between the Wolverines and Broncos is set to be just the seventh meeting for the schools. They first met in 2001 and Michigan has won all six contests by a combined score of 234 to 67.

Liverpool rocked by rival contract offer for defender
Liverpool are facing considerable uncertainty over . The defender is out of contract in less than 12 months and so far no agreement has been reached over a new deal. If Konate and sporting director Richard Hughes cannot come to a conclusion over new terms then it is highly likely he will depart as a free agent in 2026. LFC Kits Shop Now LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Real Madrid have been the team most closely linked with the 26-year-old - who joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021. Konate's situation is one reason why Liverpool have been linked with centre-backs this summer. Having sold Jarell Quansah - and with Joe Gomez injury prone - it appears that Virgil van Dijk is the ONLY central defender the club can count on with any degree of certainty up to 2027. Nathan Zeze on Liverpool radar And there are established links with Marc Guehi - who is out of contract with Crystal Palace in 2026 - while reports are also suggesting Ronald Araujo could be a target. Younger options have also been discussed in the shape of Giovanni Leoni, Joel Ordonez and Nathan Zeze. Zeze, 20, is a product of the Nantes academy who has reportedly been on the radar of the Reds for a few months now. However they will NOT be signing the France under-21 international having been blown out of the water by a contract offer from Saudi Arabia. NEOM SC sign Zeze NEOM SC - a newly-promoted Saudi Pro League team - have completed the signing of Zeze for around €25m - a sum that Liverpool could have easily afforded. But TBR Football is reporting that the Reds - and Bournemouth - opted against making a rival bid for Zeze owing to the riches laid in front of him by the Saudis. 'Liverpool have pulled out of a move for an 'incredible' replacement for Jarell Quansah due to a 'huge offer' from the Saudi Pro League,' the report reads. 'Nantes have agreed an overall deal worth €25million (£21.5million) – which in theory the European clubs would have matched. 'However, the terms on offer in Saudi have pushed him beyond what they were willing to do.'

KJ Ford hints at 'big surprise' commitment; Non-finalist surging late
Last week, Duncanville (Texas) elite four-star edge-rusher K.J. Ford announced a July 11 commitment date with a final three of Florida, Ohio State and Texas A&M. But that doesn't tell the whole story. "Big surprise tomorrow," Ford posted to Twitter/X on Thursday. And he's not just hyping up his announcement. According to On3, the Alabama Crimson Tide have suddenly emerged as the favorite to land the Duncanville star. The nation's No. 98 overall prospect and No. 11 edge-rusher took an official visit to Tuscaloosa in late May - the first of his four trips - but Alabama was eliminated when Ford announced his top three. That appears to no longer be the case. The Crimson Tide are red-hot on the recruiting trail this summer, and lead the nation in five-star commitments (four or five depending on the site). Much of that stockpile of talent has come in the past few weeks, highlighted by Gainesville (Georgia) five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin, Benjamin Russell (Alabama) five-star wide receiver Cederian Morgan, St. Frances Academy (Maryland) five-star safety Jireh Edwards and Picayune Memorial (Mississippi) four-star defensive lineman Nolan Wilson. Ford's addition would be a surprise, but given Alabama's hot streak it would be more evidence that the Crimson Tide are recruiting at an elite level. An Under Armour All-American, Ford racked up 57 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss and seven sacks in his junior campaign. Here's what 247Sports had to say about Ford as a prospect: "Well-rounded, classic defensive end with sneaky size and requisite length. May most appropriately embody a traditional three-point, 4-3 end, primarily aligned as a 7-tech. That said, likely a potentially scheme-versatile edge who could also provide valuable snaps as a hybrid two-point, 3-4 rusher." "Uses leverage and sudden point-of-attack strength to affect the run game. Still developing consistent bend-and-dip flexibility, but flashes arc-running ability as a rusher. Also shows some promising stack-and-shed power against larger foes." "Under Armour Dallas Regional in Feb. 2025 reinforced belief in POA quickness and speed-to-power abilities that often knocked offensive linemen to their heels in 1-on-1 exposure. Projects to the high-major level as a potential multi-year starter with long-term pro upside."

Pair of Oklahoma Sooners standout defenders land on Butkus Award watchlist as defensive confidence for Sooners climbs
Pair of Oklahoma Sooners standout defenders land on Butkus Award watchlist as defensive confidence for Sooners climbs originally appeared on A to Z Sports. It has been a long time since the excitement surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners' defense has been at the level it is heading into the 2025 season. National and local media are turning their eyes to Norman, Oklahoma to see the defense instead of the offense for the first time in decades. View the to see embedded media. Part of this excitement is based on the return of several defensive leaders for the Sooners, including linebacker Kip Lewis. Brent Venables has done a tremendous job rebuilding the linebacker corps for Oklahoma, and it shows with the Sooners placing two linebackers on the Butkus Award watchlist ahead of the season. Lewis, as well as Samuel Omosigho, were nominated for the prestigious award, which is handed out to the best linebacker in college football. Despite Danny Stutsman's impact week in and week out throughout his career, there's a strong case to be had that Lewis was Oklahoma's best linebacker throughout last season. He made several game-winning plays for the Sooners with his pair of "Kip-Sixes" against Auburn and Alabama, and his impact showed up beyond the stat sheet with his tremendous coverage ability. View the to see embedded media. It's a little surprising to see Omosigho on the watchlist, considering he's still technically in a battle with Kobie McKinzie for the starting MIKE linebacker spot for the Sooners, but it speaks to his overall talent level. I've written multiple times that I expected it would only be a matter of time before "Sammy O" won the job, and it seems like national consensus is reaching the same conclusion. Danny Stutsman was nominated for the Butkus Award his last two seasons, but it has been over twenty years since the Sooners have had anyone win the prestigious award. Teddy Lehman was the last Sooner to win, nabbing the Butkus in 2003. If one of these two wins the award, they would be just the fourth winner in Sooners history, joining Lehman, Rocky Calmus, and Brian Bosworth (who won it twice in a row). For now though, the Sooners are preparing for this season and stacking wins before they start thinking about individual awards.
