Pierpaolo Piccioli Discusses His Appointment at Balenciaga
There's a bit of a Kering subplot in the appointment too: in 2012, Valentino was acquired by Qatari investment fund Mayhoola for €700 million, per Reuters . Then, in July 2023, Kering announced the acquisition of a 30 per cent share in Valentino for a cash consideration of €1.7 billion. The deal includes the option for Kering to acquire the rest of the brand by 2028. At the time of the acquisition, when Piccioli was still at the creative helm, Pinault described Valentino as 'a unique Italian house that is synonymous with beauty and elegance'. Valentino's revenues in 2024 amounted to €1.3 billion, just slightly behind Balenciaga.
Kering doesn't break down sales of its Other Houses division, which includes Balenciaga alongside brands like Alexander McQueen and Boucheron. According to Morgan Stanley estimates, however, Balenciaga sales hit €1.66 billion in 2024 (up from €360 million in 2015, when Demna took the creative helm). The controversy around two ad campaigns released in late 2022, which were seen as being suggestive of child sexual abuse, dealt a blow to brand revenue. Then followed the global luxury downturn. But a slow recovery appears to be underway: 'Balenciaga delivered robust growth in leather goods, fuelled by the success of recently launched handbags, but the house is not immune to weak traffic conditions,' Kering CFO Armelle Poulou said during the group's first-quarter earnings call. Balenciaga recently bolstered its management: it promoted Nathalie Raynaud, who was instrumental in the success of the house's handbags like the Rodeo, as deputy CEO. CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli took on his role in January.
He appears to be a reassuring choice, which could benefit the group, especially after investors' initial reaction to Demna at Gucci.
His first collection for Balenciaga will be presented during Paris Fashion Week at the spring 2026 shows, joining the lineup of designer debuts that includes Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, Duran Lantink at Jean Paul Gaultier, and, of course, Demna at Gucci.
'His creative vision will thrive, and he will perfectly interpret the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga, building on the house's bold creativity, rich heritage and strong culture,' Gianangeli said in a statement. 'With the expertise of our teams and the dynamic creative energy that has historically driven Balenciaga, I look forward to what we will build together.'
'I'm ready. I had enough rest, so I'm ready to start,' Piccioli said.

Europe gears up to regulate DeFi in 2026 as MiCA leaves sector in limbo
European lawmakers have yet to define 'decentralization,' even as regulators begin preparing for decentralized finance (DeFi) to become a key focus of crypto policy in 2026. The world's first comprehensive regulatory framework for the crypto industry, the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), went into effect on Dec. 30, 2024. Among its aims are to boost investor protection, prevent fraud and address stablecoin reserve management. Still, as MiCA enters its final implementation phase, policymakers are shifting their attention to regulating DeFi, where many questions remain unresolved, according to Vyara Savova, senior policy lead at the European Crypto Initiative (EUCI). Speaking during Cointelegraph's Chain Reaction X Spaces show on June 4, Savova said DeFi protocols remain in regulatory limbo. The framework's implementation leaves ambiguity around DeFi protocols, as 'DeFi is theoretically outside the scope of MiCA,' Savova said, adding: 'No one actually knows what EU policymakers mean by DeFi.' Savova said that starting around mid-2026, authorities in the bloc will start interpreting how to legally define decentralization. The initial MiCA framework received significant criticism for its gaps regarding decentralized protocols, as it required DeFi platforms to adhere to the same licensing and Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements as traditional financial services firms. However, a provision to the bill, Recital 22, mentioned that fully decentralized crypto-asset service providers 'should not fall within the scope of this Regulation.' MiCA 2 is not happening: EU crypto policy expert While MiCA's final implementation went live at the end of 2024, lawmakers are still conducting revisions every 12 to 18 months related to potential gaps in the regulation. Yet despite many previous calls from Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, the MiCA II framework will not be moving forward, according to Marina Markezic, executive director and co-founder of EUCI: 'You have probably heard about a potential MiCA II. It's not happening.' She added that ongoing discussions about stablecoins may result in targeted legislative updates rather than a full sequel to MiCA. European Parliament to vote on tech sovereignty proposal in July
The European Parliament is set to vote on a technology sovereignty proposal submitted by the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) under the leadership of pro-Bitcoin lawmaker Sarah Knafo. ITRE, one of 24 standing committees in the European Parliament, on June 3 adopted a non-binding report on tech sovereignty and digital infrastructure, calling for a European policy for the digital ecosystem. The proposal highlights concerns that Europe is falling behind the United States and China in strategic sectors such as the cloud, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and communication infrastructure. The report suggests lifting barriers to private investment in innovation, promoting energy-efficient computing and blockchain infrastructure and safeguarding privacy in digital finance. Parliament vote expected in July According to the communication from the ITRE, the European Parliament is expected to vote on the proposal in the upcoming plenary session. Knafo, a key backer of the proposal, told Cointelegraph that the vote will most likely occur during the July session. 'If all the right-wing parties vote in favor of the text, and normally they should, we have a good chance to get a majority,' said Knafo. 'But left-wing parties put pressure on the center-right party to block it. We will see if they resist it.' Knafo emphasized that the report is not yet a legally binding piece of legislation and is supposed to define political guidelines only. Is the EU set for a digital revolution? 'I strongly believe that we are still at the very beginning of the digital revolution. Tether debuts omnichain gold stablecoin on TON
Tether announced a partnership with the TON Foundation to debut an omnichain version of its gold stablecoin XAUt on The Open Network, in an effort to expand the token across ecosystems. The new token, 'XAUt0,' was built on LayerZero's Omnichain Fungible Token standard, which allows tokens to be transferred through blockchains without wrapping or middlechains. XAUt, the token's non-omnichain version, is the largest gold stablecoin by market capitalization, with over $832 million, according to CoinGecko. It is closely followed by Paxos's Pax Gold, which holds a market cap of $811 million as of June 2. XAUt is available only on the Ethereum blockchain. Tether has more than 7.7 tons of physical gold backing the XAUT stablecoin, according to the company's Q1 2025 attestation report. Each XAUt token represents one troy ounce of the global asset, which is reportedly being stored in a Swiss vault. XAUt0 may mimic Tether's rollout of USDT0 (USDT0), a crosschain dollar-backed stablecoin deployed across Optimism's Superchain, an ecosystem that has at least eight blockchains. USDT0 is a bridged token of Tether's USDt, the company's dollar-backed stablecoin. Tether also deployed USDt onto the TON blockchain in April 2024. Gold rises backed by economic uncertainty Gold is considered a safe-haven asset and, in 2025, has experienced a steep appreciation in price due to economic uncertainty, particularly due to ongoing global trade wars. Gold's price was at $3,304 per ounce on May 30, up $2,327 from a year ago — a 29.5% jump in 12 months. In addition, Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have experienced significant gains year-to-date, with the eight top funds by total assets experiencing increases of more than 25%.
