New Delhi: S&P Global Ratings on Tuesday said high US tariffs are unlikely to impact India's long-term growth prospects as the government is focused on economic reforms and trying to improve the standard of living of people.S&P, after a gap of 18 years, upgraded India's sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' with a stable outlook. It cited robust economic growth, political commitment for fiscal consolidation and 'conducive' monetary policy to check inflation as the reasons for the rating upgrade."Going forward, we expect this growth dynamics will continue to play out over 3 years with growth averaging about 6.8 per cent. If infrastructure and connectivity improve in India, it will remove bottlenecks that are hindering long-term economic growth and bring India's potential growth path even higher," S&P Global Ratings Director YeeFarn Phua said.India remains among the strongest and best-performing economies in the world, and over the past 3-4 years, India has been an outperformer in growth compared to regional peers, Phua said at a webinar on India's rating upgrade. On the impact of high US tariffs, S&P Asia Pacific Economist Vishrut Rana said India's economy is relatively less trade-oriented, with external demand contributing only 15 per cent of the overall economy and 85 per cent driven by domestic factors."So it is a very heavily domestically oriented economy. That is one element of shelter," Rana said, adding, another mitigating factor of high tariffs is that the high 50 per cent tax is not applicable on all goods exported from India."It is a complicated environment. There are several mitigating factors which are likely to cushion the overall impact on the economy. Still, we could see some short-term confidence effects on the economy. Medium term, the structural factors -- favourable growth path, infrastructure and continued favourable business environment -- will determine the growth path," Rana said. The US has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods coming to the country, effective August 7. An additional 25 per cent duty is scheduled to be imposed from August 27, taking the total tariff to 50 per cent.Further, Phua said that India remains focused on economic reforms, fiscal consolidation and infrastructure investment."These external developments (like high tariffs) can sometimes create some noise but by and large, this government is staying on course and trying to improve the standard of living for its people," Phua said.Asked about the impact of tariffs on growth, he said S&P takes a long-term view while deciding on ratings, and there are sectoral exemptions to pharma and consumer electronics."Exposure of India to the US in terms of exports is just 1 pc of GDP. So, even though tariffs remain high, we don't think it will have an overall impact on India's long-term growth prospects. Short term, it might have some marginal hit to growth, over a longer term, we believe India's growth story remains sound," Phua added.

Nasdaq tumbles as Jackson Hole jitters hit tech stocks
The Nasdaq and S&P 500 slid on Tuesday driven by tech stocks, as investors gear up for what Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell will say about the path of interest rates at a key conference later in the week. ADVERTISEMENT The Nasdaq fell as megacaps lost, after having rallied for much of the year. Nvidia fell 3.5%, the biggest drop in nearly four months. The key event this week is the Fed's annual symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from Aug. 21-23, where Powell's comments will be scrutinized for any clues on the central bank's outlook on the economy and monetary policy. "It seems like folks are hedging a little going into Jackson Hole, thinking Powell might be more hawkish than markets currently appreciate," said James Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group. Interest rate futures point to a total of two rate cuts this year worth 25 basis points each, with the first expected in September, according to data compiled by LSEG. Some market participants also expressed some concerns about AI-related stocks after OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman said they are in a bubble in an interview with "The Verge" late last week. ADVERTISEMENT The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 10.45 points, roughly flat, to 44,922.27, the S&P 500 lost 37.78 points, or 0.59%, to 6,411.37 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 314.82 points, or 1.46%, to 21,314.95. Unlock 500+ Stock Recos on App Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, said some investors are taking some profits from tech stocks and rotating into other sectors. "(This move) spills into the broader market because of those stocks' weight in major indices," he added. ADVERTISEMENT Still, six of the S&P 500 sectors rose. Real estate led the pack, up 1.8%, helped by better-than-expected housing data. On the other hand, technology and communications services lost over 1.9% and 1.2%, respectively. A Reuters poll showed on Tuesday that the S&P 500 will end 2025 just below current near-record levels , at 6,300 points, reflecting tempered optimism amid ongoing concerns over the economic impact of President Donald Trump's global tariffs and uncertainty surrounding Fed rate cuts. ADVERTISEMENT The blue-chip Dow briefly hit a record high on Tuesday, aided by a rise in Home Depot's shares after the retailer kept its annual forecasts intact. Home Depot rose 3.17% despite missing quarterly results estimates, while rival home-improvement chain Lowe's also gained 2.18%. ADVERTISEMENT Earnings from Lowe's and big-box retailers Walmart and Target later this week are now in focus as investors await more insight on the health of the American consumer. "Consumers are still not really spending at full speed ahead, they're a little bit cautious," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities. "They're waiting to see the full results of the tariffs' impact on the upcoming holiday sales in a couple of months from now." Intel jumped roughly 7% after the chipmaker got a $2 billion capital injection from Japan's SoftBank Group. Palo Alto Networks rose 3.06% after the cybersecurity company forecast fiscal 2026 revenue and profit above estimates. Medtronic lost 3.13%, after the company said it would add two new directors to its board after Elliott Investment Management took a large stake in the medical-device maker. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.06-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 205 new highs and 62 new lows on the NYSE. The S&P 500 posted 13 new 52-week highs and one new low while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 56 new highs and 88 new lows. (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel)

Buy or sell: Vaishali Parekh recommends three intraday stocks to buy today — 20 August 2025
Buy or sell stocks: The key benchmark indices of the Indian stock market extended gains for the fourth session amid strong global cues. Investor sentiment remained buoyed by reports of a streamlined Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, expected to boost spending and fuel consumption. The Nifty 50 index started the session flat; however, it gained momentum as the session progressed to form an intraday high of 25,012 in the mid-session. The 50-stock index thereafter consolidated in a range to close just below the 25,000 levels. At close, the Sensex was up 370 points or 0.46% at 81,644, and the Nifty was up 103 points or 0.42% at 24,980. Among sectors, except pharma, all other sectoral indices ended in the green, with telecom, FMCG, media, auto, and oil and gas up 1%- 2% each. The Nifty midcap 100 and small cap 100 indices rose 0.97% and 0.7%, respectively. Vaishali Parekh, Vice President of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, believes the Indian stock market sentiment improved as the Nifty 50 index closed above 50-DEMA resistance at 24,815 levels. A decisive breakout above 25,100 would inject a fresh bull trend on Dalal Street. Speaking on the outlook of the Nifty 50 index, Vaishali Parekh said, "The Nifty 50 index has regained strength after witnessing two sessions of winning streaks from the close above the 50-DEMA level of the 24,800 zone and has retested the 25,000 level once again, expecting further rise in the coming sessions. With the undertone maintained positive along with the broader markets indicating active participation, the index is maintained positive, and as mentioned earlier, once the recent peak of the 25,100 zone is breached decisively, we can anticipate higher targets of the 25,200 and 25,300 levels in the coming days. As mentioned earlier, the crucial support zone would be positioned near the 24,800 level, which needs to be sustained." On the outlook of the Bank Nifty today, Parekh said, "The Bank Nifty index continues to oscillate between the narrow range of the 56,000 zone, which is acting as a tough hurdle, and on the downside is supported by the 55,500 zone, which needs to be sustained to keep the positive bias intact. A decisive breach above the 56,000 level shall trigger a fresh upward move with targets of 56,500 and 57,000 levels achievable in the coming sessions." Parekh said that immediate support for the Nifty 50 index is 24,800, while the resistance is 25,100. The Bank Nifty would have the daily range of 55,400 to 56,500. Regarding intraday stocks to buy today, Vaishali Parekh recommended these three shares: UPL, L&T Finance, and Exide Industries. 1] UPL: Buy at ₹ 707, Target ₹ 750, Stop Loss ₹ 690; 2] L&T Finance: Buy at ₹ 217, Target ₹ 535, Stop Loss ₹ 210; and 3] Exide Industries: Buy at ₹ 393, Target ₹ 420, Stop Loss ₹ 383. Stocks to buy under ₹100: Experts recommend four shares to buy today — 20 August 2025
Stocks to buy under ₹ 100: The key benchmark indices of the Indian stock market extended gains for the fourth session amid strong global cues. On the Indian stock market's outlook today, Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research — Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal, said, "Positive momentum is likely to continue, supported by sector-specific relief measures, ongoing government policy support, and robust institutional flows. These factors are expected to sustain market activity and drive confidence across key sectors over the near term." Speaking on the outlook of the Nifty 50 index, Rajesh Bhosale, Equity Technical Analyst, Angel One, said, "Given the broad-based participation and intraday dips getting absorbed, we expect the positive momentum to continue. Prices could test the 61.8% retracement around 25,150, and a move beyond this golden ratio would technically open doors eventually toward the recent swing high of 25,670. The sharp upward slope of the RSI smoothed indicator also reinforces this positive bias. Hence, traders are advised to adopt a 'buy-on-dips' approach. Immediate support lies at 24,850 (last two sessions' low), while 24,700 remains a strong support. On the sectoral front, thematic moves around GST updates continue to create buzz, and traders should stay focused on such spaces for potential outperformance." On the outlook of the Bank Nifty today, Om Mehra, Technical Research Analyst, SAMCO Securities, said, "The Bank Nifty index may face resistance near 56,100–56,150, while a move above this zone would lift the index higher. The support is placed at 55,600, followed by 55,500. Until Nifty Bank closes decisively above 56,150, the outlook stays cautious, and any intraday rise may meet resistance. A buy on dip approach is reasonable as long as 55,500–55,450 holds on a closing basis." Regarding intraday stocks to buy today, market experts — Shiju Kuthupalakkal, Senior Manager of Technical Research at Anand Rathi; Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet; and Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree Investment, recommended four stocks to buy under ₹ 100: MMTC, Ola Electric Mobility, Patel Engineering, and Geojit Financial Services. 1] MMTC: Buy at ₹ 65.30, Target ₹ 70, Stop Loss ₹ 63.50. 2] Ola Electric Mobility: Buy at ₹ 44.20, Targets ₹ 47, ₹ 48.30, Stop Loss ₹ 41.80; and 3] Patel Engineering: Buy at ₹ 38.20, Targets ₹ 41, ₹ 42.90, Stop Loss ₹ 36.40. 4] Geojit Financial Services: Buy at ₹ 75.50, Target ₹ 80, Stop Loss ₹ 72.
