With Western Province's Stormers players still in hibernation and Evan Roos in the Springbok fold, loose forward Louw Nel is hoping to make the most of his opportunities in the Currie Cup.
Nel has been a beacon of light in Province's first two matches during a difficult start to the competition. The No. 8 scored a brace of tries in their defeat to the Lions this past weekend, while also ranking among the players with the most carries in the match.
Province have had to juggle their resources in the Currie Cup. Nel, who was a fringe player for the Stormers during their previous United Rugby Championship campaign, has been sharing a dressing room with players from the club set-up, as well as a few mercenaries from the Springbok Sevens side.
This week, ahead of their match against Griquas in Kimberley, the team will also be boosted by some of their Junior Springboks, who were given a break after their triumphant exploits at the recent U20 World Championships. Players such as Junior Boks captain Riley Norton, Xola Nyali, Wandile Mlaba, Oliver Reid, Herman Lubbe, Siya Ndlozi, Dominic Malgas and Gino Cupido are expected to be back in the mix.

Nel is enjoying the game time after playing a bit-part role in the URC, and hopes that good performances in the Currie Cup will see him become a regular for the Stormers.
'The Currie Cup is a chance to get minutes under the belt, and that is ultimately how you improve as a player. In the URC I got a few minutes off the bench, so for me it's nice to play week in and week out and build confidence,' Nel told reporters this week.
'It's a great opportunity for us and the Junior Boks guys to put their hands up. There's a lot of depth in the URC squad, but for us it's a nice opportunity to prove ourselves and improve.
'There is a great energy in the Currie Cup, and I believe we are moving in the right direction.'

Currie Cup result: Cheetahs peep Sharks XV in cagey affair

The Sharks' search for their first win will take them to the Suzuki Stadium to take on Griquas next week, while the Cheetahs host Western Province in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The Free State Cheetahs outlasted a brave and willing Sharks XV to register their second win of the 2025 Currie Cup campaign. Residents of the Clermont township, west of Durban, were treated to some exhibition-style rugby at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium as both teams showed a willingness to run the ball. But ultimately a string of handling errors and penalties made it a low-scoring affair, with the men from Bloemfontein prevailing 7-5 to register a crucial away win and keep their charge to the playoffs alive. Winless Sharks The Sharks remain winless in the competition and stay rooted to the bottom of the table. A yellow card after 14 minutes for Sharks lock Corne Rahl, led to an immediate try for the Cheetahs courtesy of No 8 Neels Volschenk. Wing Ntokozo Makhaza was successful with the conversion. The frantic rugby continued in the second half, with end-to-end running from both teams without much success. But the Sharks XV finally got on the scoreboard after some sustained pressure on the Cheetahs line, with loosehead prop Phato Ganyane crashing over. Unfortunately for JP Pietersen's team, the conversion was missed by replacement fullback Jean Smith. It doesn't get any easier for the Sharks as they now brace for a tough visit to the Suzuki Stadium to take on Griquas, while the Cheetahs host Western Province in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Sharks fall short against Cheetahs in tense Currie Cup clash

Hollywoodbets Sharks suffered another loss against the Cheetahs at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont on Saturday. | Backpagepix Change of venue but no change in fortunes for Sharks in narrow loss to Cheetahs The Sharks took their first home game of the Currie Cup season to Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, Clermont, where they faced the visiting Free State Cheetahs in round three on Saturday evening (5.10pm kickoff). The Durban side were seeking their first win of the competition in the township in the west of Durban, where entry was free. Yet there would be no happy homecoming in front of a decent crowd that added a great vibe to the match on Women's Day as the young Sharks succumbed 7-5. The Cheetahs piled the pressure on the Sharks through a succession of lineouts in the far right corner with more than 13 minutes on the clock. But the Sharks did well to keep them at bay with desperate defence in the phases that followed. The defensive wall eventually cracked as Neels Volshenk barged over the try line for the opening points of the match, with Ntokozo Makhaza converting. The Sharks were also reduced to 14 men in the buildup after lock Corné Rahl was sin-binned. The match started to loosen up, with the visitors looking dangerous on the break with ball in hand but the home also showed flashes of attacking intent. Fullback Jaco Williams was often the spark for the coastal side and Junior Bok star Vusi Moyo used his big boot to good effect at times. The service from scrumhalf Bradley Davis was also crisp and his all-round play was solid. The match simmered without really coming to the boil as half-time drew closer with neither team able to a land a further decisive blow. The Cheetahs did come close after opting to kick for touch after winning a penalty just inside the Sharks half. A knock-on close to the line denied them after a few phases where they kept the ball tight. The score was 7-0 at the break. Sharks coach JP Pietersen would have been pleased with the defensive resilience of his charges, but they would need to fire as an attacking unit in the second stanza to avoid a damaging third straight loss. They started brightly, building attacking phases but the Cheetahs did well to cope with the danger. The Sharks were let down by ill discipline as they let the visitors off the hook. Repeated visits to the Sharks 22 yielded little reward for the Cheetahs. With the Cheetahs' lead a slender one, the Sharks were still in the match. The mounting handling errors continued to be their undoing. A chip and chase led to a Sharks penalty and they opted for touch. They secured their lineout ball and a pass over the top found charging prop Phatu Ganyane to dot down in the far right corner. The conversion attempt was missed. The Cheetahs were stung into life and were unlucky not to score straight away. They were camped in the Sharks 22 for the next few minutes. The home side had to dig deep once again to shut them out. The pressure was relentless, however, with the Sharks battling to exit their half with time running out. They were feeding off Cheetahs' scraps on the attacking end. A Sharks lineout in the half represented one of the last attacking chances for the home side. A late Cheetahs steal broke the hearts of Sharks fans as the match ended 7-5. Scores Sharks XV 5 (0) Tries: Ganyane; Free State Cheetahs 7 (7) Tries: Volshenk, Conversion: Makaza.

Pumas overpower Bulls in impressive six-try Currie Cup victory

Pumas scrumhalf Ross Braude dominated proceedings on the attack as his side scored six tries to complete a comprehensive victory over the Bulls in Pretoria. Image: BackpagePix After dominant victories in their first two Currie Cup matches, the Bulls were brought back down to earth by the experienced Pumas in their clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. The visitors bullied their hosts in contact, dominated the scrums, and showed superiority with their driving mauls and counter-mauls to claim a bonus-point 41-7 win in Pretoria. With the six-try victory, the Jimmy Stonehouse-coached outfit leapfrogged the Lions and Bulls into the lead on the official log, with the Johannesburg side still to play against the Boland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon. Next Stay Close ✕ The Pumas showed why they are one of the favourites in the competition, despite a hiccup last weekend, and their experience paved the way for the victory. Stonehouse will be happy with how his side responded, especially away from home, following the loss to the Cheetahs. While the first half was a grinding affair as both sides looked to get on top, they would've been frustrated with the errors that crept in and saw them changing sides with the score only at 10-7 in favour of the eventual winners. The Bulls were first to score a try after an opening penalty from the visitors. That converted try remained the sole points for the home side. They coughed up plenty of opportunities after good plays, and it looked as if they were going to put up a strong fight. The hosts had the visitors under pressure with their ball-in-hand play for a good part of the first half. However, the experience of the Pumas enabled them to weather the initial storm to claim the upper hand in almost all facets of the game in the final 10 minutes before halftime.
